How to use our Electric Car Charging Cost Calculator
Pick your electric car, set your power rates, and choose how you charge. The calculator shows your charging cost, how long the charge takes, how much range you add, and what you will spend each month and year.
Enter specs manually instead: Turn this switch on if your EV is not on the list. Then you type in your own battery and charging numbers.
Make: Choose the brand of your electric car, like Tesla, Ford, or Kia. This opens the next menu.
Model: Choose your car model, like Model 3 or Mustang Mach-E.
Year: Choose the model year of your EV. Battery size can change from year to year.
Trim: Choose your trim level. This fills in the battery size, range, and max charging speeds.
Usable battery capacity (kWh): In manual mode, type how many kilowatt-hours your battery can really use, not the gross size. The kWh Calculator helps if you need to convert watt-hours or amp-hours first.

Max AC charging rate (kW): In manual mode, type the top speed your onboard charger accepts from a wall or Level 2 plug.
Max DC charging rate (kW): In manual mode, type the top speed your car accepts at a fast charger.
U.S. state: Pick your state. This fills in the average home electricity price for that state.
Home electricity rate ($/kWh): Type the price you pay at home. Check your power bill for the exact number, or estimate household draw with the Power Consumption Calculator.
Public Level 2 rate ($/kWh): Type what a public Level 2 station charges per kilowatt-hour. About $0.25 is normal.
DC fast charging rate ($/kWh): Type what a fast charging network charges per kilowatt-hour. About $0.35 is normal.
Charging mode tabs: Click Home Charging, Public Level 2, or DC Fast Charging. The full breakdown follows the tab you pick.
Home charger preset: Pick your outlet or wall charger. It fills in the volts and amps for you.

Public Level 2 preset: Pick the type of public station you use. You can also edit its volts and amps.
DC fast charger preset: Pick the fast charger type, like a 150 kW CCS or a Tesla Supercharger.

Start SoC (%) and Target SoC (%): Drag the slider or type numbers to set how full the battery is now and how full you want it. Target must be higher than start.
Battery temperature: Choose Cold, Normal, or Hot. Cold slows charging by 20% and hot by 10%.

Electric Car Charging Costs Explained
Charging an electric car (EV) works a lot like filling a gas tank, but you pay for kilowatt-hours (kWh) instead of gallons. Your cost depends on three things: how much energy your battery needs, the price you pay per kWh, and where you plug in.
The Basic Math
The main idea is simple:
Cost = Energy added (kWh) × Price per kWh
If you charge a 75 kWh battery from 20% to 80%, you add about 45 kWh. At $0.16 per kWh, that session costs about $7.20 before losses.
Charging Losses Are Real
Some power is lost as heat in the cable, the charger, and the battery. So the meter always shows more kWh than your battery actually gains. Home and public AC charging lose about 12%. DC fast charging loses about 10%. You pay for the lost energy too.
The Three Ways to Charge

Why Fast Charging Slows Down
A DC fast charger does not hold full power the whole time. Once the battery passes about 50–80%, the car slows the flow to protect the cells. This is called tapering. That is why most drivers stop at 80% instead of waiting for 100%.
Weather Changes Everything
Cold batteries charge slower and use more energy. Below freezing, charging speed can drop by about 20%. Very hot days can cut speed by about 10% because the car cools the pack. Warm temperatures in the normal range are best.
