Introduction

This deck stair calculator helps you plan safe stairs for your deck. You enter the total rise — the height from the ground to the top of your deck. You also pick a riser height and a tread depth. The calculator does the rest of the math for you.

Deck Stairs: What You Need to Know

Deck stairs connect your deck to the ground. To build them, you need three key numbers: the total rise (height from the ground to the top of the deck boards), the riser height (how tall each step is), and the tread depth (how deep each step is front to back).   • Tread — the flat board you step on. You always have one fewer tread than risers.
  • Total run — how far the stairs stick out from the deck.

Building Code Rules

Most U.S. decks follow the IRC (International Residential Code). The main stair rules are:

  • Riser height: between 4 in and 7¾ in.
  • Tread depth: at least 10 in.
  • One stair run can rise no more than 147 in (12 ft 3 in). Taller? You need a landing in the middle.
  • All risers must be the same height. A difference bigger than 3/8 in can trip people and fail inspection.

How Riser Height Is Found

You divide the total rise by a whole number of steps. Steps can't be half-steps, so the math almost never lands on your target exactly. Divide the total rise by your goal riser height, round to the nearest whole number, then divide the total rise by that number again. That gives the real riser height for every step. The Comfort Rule

Builders use a simple check: 2 × riser + tread should land between 24 in and 25 in. Stairs in this range feel natural to walk. Too low and the stairs feel long and shallow. Too high and they feel steep and tiring. The Bottom Step Trick

This is the most common mistake in deck stairs. The tread boards sit on top of the stringer, so every step gains the thickness of that board. If you cut all notches the same, the bottom step ends up too tall. The fix: cut the bottom of the stringer shorter by the tread board thickness (usually 1 in or 1½ in). Then every finished step measures the same.

Stringers and Width

Stairs need enough stringers to stop the treads from bending. A good rule is one stringer at each side and the rest spaced no more than 16 in on center. A 36 in wide stair usually needs 3 stringers. Wider stairs or thin composite boards may need them closer, so read the decking maker's instructions. Measuring the Total Rise

Measure from the finished ground surface (after any pad or patio) up to the top of the finished deck boards. If you measure to the frame instead of the deck surface, every step will be off. Ground that slopes means you should measure where the bottom step will actually sit. Frequently asked questions

How long should I cut my stringer boards?

Buy boards longer than the stringer length the calculator shows. The number given is the straight line from the ground to the top of the deck. You still need extra wood for the top and bottom cuts and for waste.

A good rule is to add about 12 inches to the stringer length when you buy lumber. Cutting short is expensive, cutting long is easy to fix.

What size lumber do I use for deck stair stringers?

Most deck stringers are cut from 2x12 pressure treated lumber. A 2x10 is too narrow once you cut the notches out.

After you cut the steps, at least 5 inches of solid wood must be left behind the notches. This leftover part is called the throat. If the throat is thin, the stringer can crack under load.

How wide should my deck stairs be?

Code sets the smallest width at 36 inches (about 914 mm). That is measured between the rails, not the outside of the stringers.

Many builders go wider, like 42 or 48 inches, so two people can pass. Type your width into the Stair Width box and the calculator tells you how many stringers to cut.

Do my deck stairs need a handrail?

Yes, if the stairs have 4 or more risers. The handrail must be graspable and sit 34 to 38 inches above the front edge of the treads.

You also need a guard on open sides when the deck or stairs are more than 30 inches above the ground. Check with your local code office, since rules vary by town.

What is the difference between Outside Frame and Outside Frame – Flush?

Both hang the stringer on the outside face of the rim board. The difference is where the top sits.

  • Outside Frame: the stringer top lines up with the finished deck surface. You take the tread board thickness off the bottom cut.
  • Outside Frame – Flush: the stringer top is level with the top of the frame, so the board thickness is used up at the top instead.

Why is there one fewer tread than riser?

The deck surface acts as the top tread. So the last step up is a riser, but you land on the deck instead of a stair board.

If you have 7 risers, you cut 6 treads. This is normal and is how the calculator counts them.

Does the tread depth include the nosing or overhang?

The tread depth in this calculator is the run, which is the horizontal spacing from one step to the next. That is the number code measures.

If your boards hang over the front by an inch, the board is wider than the run. The overhang does not change the run or the total run of your stairs.

What tread depth do I get with two 2x6 deck boards?

Two 2x6 boards measure 5.5 inches each, so 11 inches of wood. Add a small gap of about 1/8 inch and you get close to 11 inches of tread depth.

Two 2x8 boards give about 15 inches. Type your real number into the Tread Depth box for exact results.

Is the comfort ratio a code rule?

No. The 2R + T check is a builder guideline, not law. Your stairs can pass inspection and still fall outside 24 to 25 inches.

Still, stairs inside that range feel best to walk. If yours is off, try a different riser count or a deeper tread and watch the number change.

What is a good angle for deck stairs?

Most comfortable deck stairs land between 30 and 37 degrees. That is where normal riser and tread sizes put you.

Past 38 degrees the stairs feel steep and tiring. Below 28 degrees they feel long and shallow, and they eat up a lot of yard space.

How much yard space do I need in front of the deck?

Start with the total run the calculator shows. That is how far the stairs stick out from the deck.

Then add at least 36 inches of flat landing at the bottom. So a 60 inch run needs about 8 feet of clear space from the deck.

Why does the calculator show more than one riser option?

Your total rise can be split several ways. Seven steps give taller risers, eight steps give shorter ones.

Do I need a concrete pad at the bottom of the stairs?

Yes, the bottom of the stairs needs a solid, level base. Bare dirt shifts and rots the wood.

Most builders pour a concrete pad or set footings. Pour the pad before you measure your total rise, since the pad raises the ground and changes every step.

Can I use this calculator for composite decking?

Yes. Enter the real thickness of your composite board in the Tread Thickness box, since it is often 1 inch instead of 1½ inches.

One warning: many composite brands need stringers closer than 16 inches on center, sometimes 12 inches. Always read the maker's install guide before you cut.

How do I attach the stringers to the deck?

Most builders bolt or screw the stringers to the rim board and add metal stringer hangers or connectors for strength. Do not rely on nails alone.

At the bottom, anchor the stringers to the pad or footing with a metal connector so the stairs cannot slide.

Why does my bottom step cut look shorter than the rest?

That is on purpose. The tread board sits on top of the stringer and adds its own thickness to every step.

By cutting the bottom shorter by the board thickness, the first finished step ends up the same height as all the others. The calculator does this math for you and shows it as the Bottom Step Rise.

What happens if my risers are not all the same?

Uneven steps trip people. Code allows no more than 3/8 inch of difference between the tallest and shortest riser in one run.

The most common cause is a wrong total rise measurement or forgetting the tread thickness at the bottom. Measure twice before you cut the first stringer.
