Introduction

The Well Volume Calculator tells you how much water is sitting inside your well. Type in the casing size, how deep the well goes, and how far down the water starts. The tool does the math and gives you the answer in gallons, liters, cubic feet, and cubic meters.

It also figures out your purge volume. Before you test well water, you need to pump out the old water first. Most rules say to remove 3 to 5 well volumes. Pick your multiplier and the calculator shows you the exact amount to pump.

There are two modes. Simple Mode uses just three numbers and works great for most home wells. Advanced Mode adds the bore hole size, casing outer diameter, and screen details, so you get the gravel pack and screen volumes too.

You can work in inches and feet or in millimeters and meters. How to use our Well Volume Calculator

Well Casing Inner Diameter: Type the width inside the casing pipe, not the outside. A common home well is 4 inches.

Total Well Depth: Type how deep the well goes, from the top of the casing to the bottom. Check your well report or use a sounding tape.

Depth to Static Water Level: Type how far down the resting water sits when the pump is off. Use 0 if water is right at the top.

Casing Outer Diameter (Advanced): Type the outside width of the casing pipe. This is used with the bore hole to find the ring-shaped space around the pipe.

Well Screen Diameter (Advanced): Type the inside width of the slotted screen. It is often the same as the casing inner diameter.

Well Screen Length (Advanced): Type how tall the slotted screen section is. This is on your well completion report.

Purge Multiplier: Pick how many well volumes you plan to pump out, like 3× or 5×. Most sampling rules ask for 3 to 5.

Well Volume: What It Means

Well volume is the amount of water standing inside a well right now. It is the water that sits in the casing (the pipe in the ground) from the top of the water down to the bottom of the well. That water only fills part of the well. The space above the water is dry pipe, so it does not count.

The Three Numbers You Need

  • Casing inner diameter – the width inside the pipe, not the outside. A common home well is 4 or 6 inches.
  • Total well depth – from the top of the well down to the bottom. This is on the well report the driller gave you.
  • Depth to static water level – how far down the water sits when the pump is off. You measure this with a water level tape.

Depth minus water level gives the water column height. That height, plus the pipe width, gives the volume.

How the Math Works

A well is just a tall round tube of water. So the volume is the circle area times the height:

Volume = 3.1416 × radius² × water column height

The radius is half the inner diameter. If you work in feet, the answer comes out in cubic feet. Multiply cubic feet by 7.48 to get U.S. gallons, or by 28.32 to get liters. Why Well Volume Matters

Shock chlorination. When you disinfect a well after flooding, repairs, or a bad bacteria test, the bleach dose is based on well volume. Too little does nothing. Too much can harm the pump parts and the septic system. The Dilution Calculator and the PPM Calculator help you land on the right chlorine strength.

Purging before a water test. Water that has sat in the pipe is stale. It does not match the water in the ground. Sampling rules usually say to pump out 3 to 5 well volumes first, so fresh groundwater is what gets tested. Three well volumes is the common choice for slow, low-flow sampling. Screen and Gravel Pack

Many wells have more water than just the pipe holds. The screen is the slotted section near the bottom that lets water in. Around the casing there is often a gravel pack in the drilled hole, called the annulus. Water fills the gaps between the gravel bits. Only about 30% of that ring is open space, so the gravel pack holds less water than its size suggests. For careful purge planning on monitoring wells, this extra water gets added in. Tips for Good Numbers

  • Measure the water level with the pump off for at least a few hours. A running pump pulls the level down.
  • Water levels move with the seasons. Check again in a dry month.
  • Use the inside pipe width. Using the outside width makes your volume too big.
  • Keep your well report. It lists depth, casing size, and screen length.
  • Round your purge amount up, never down.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my well volume smaller than I expected?

Only the water part counts. If your well is 200 feet deep but the water starts at 150 feet, you have just 50 feet of water. The empty pipe above the water holds nothing.

So a deep well can hold less water than a shallow one with a high water table.

What is the difference between Simple Mode and Advanced Mode?

Simple Mode counts only the water inside the casing pipe. This is what most home well owners need for chlorination or a water test.

Advanced Mode adds two extra spaces:

  • Water in the gravel pack ring around the pipe
  • Water in the screen section at the bottom

Advanced Mode gives a bigger number. Use it for monitoring wells and formal sampling plans.

How do I measure the depth to static water level?

Use a water level meter or an electric tape. Drop it down the well until it beeps or touches water, then read the mark on the tape.

Turn the pump off for a few hours first. A running pump pulls the level down and gives you a wrong reading.

Where do I find my total well depth?

Check your well completion report. The driller gives you one when the well is built, and it lists depth, casing size, and screen length.

No report? Lower a weighted sounding tape until it hits bottom. Your state well records office may also have a copy on file.

Why does the calculator ask for inner diameter and not outer?

Water sits inside the pipe, so only the inside width matters. The pipe wall takes up space and holds no water.

A 4 inch well often has a 4.5 inch outside width. Using 4.5 instead of 4 makes your volume about 27% too high.

What purge multiplier should I pick?

Most sampling rules ask for 3 to 5 well volumes.

  • – common for low-flow sampling and most standard tests
  • 4× or 5× – used when rules are stricter or the water is very stale
  • 1× or 2× – quick flush jobs, not full sampling

Always check the rule your lab or state uses. When unsure, purge more, not less.

Can I enter 0 for the static water level?

Yes, but only if water sits right at the top of the casing. This happens with flowing artesian wells.

For most wells the water sits well below the top, so enter that real depth.

Why do I get an error saying the water level must be less than total depth?

If the water level equals or passes the well depth, there is no water in the well. The math would give zero or a negative volume, so the tool stops.

Check both numbers. A common mix-up is entering depth in feet and water level in meters.

Why is only 30% of the gravel pack counted as water?

The ring around the casing is packed with sand or gravel, not open space. Water only fills the tiny gaps between the stones.

About 30% of that space is gaps. That porosity figure follows common EPA and ASTM practice for filter pack sand.

How much bleach do I need to shock chlorinate my well?

Start with the gallon number this tool gives you. A common home target is 200 ppm of chlorine.

Roughly, 3 cups of regular unscented household bleach per 100 gallons of well water gets you close. Pour it in, run each tap until you smell chlorine, and let it sit 12 to 24 hours.

Never mix bleach with other cleaners. Do not drink the water until you flush it out and retest.

Does my well volume change during the year?

Yes. Water levels drop in dry summer months and rise after wet weather or snowmelt.

That means your water column height changes, so your volume changes too. Take a fresh water level reading each time you need the number.

How long will it take to pump out my purge volume?

Divide the purge gallons by your pump rate in gallons per minute.

Example: 60 gallons to purge at 5 gallons per minute takes 12 minutes.

If you do not know the pump rate, time how long it takes to fill a 5 gallon bucket.

Does this include water in the pipes and pressure tank?

No. The tool only measures water in the well itself.

For chlorination you still need to run each faucet until you smell bleach. That pushes treated water into the house lines and tank.

Can I switch between inches and millimeters after I type my numbers?

Yes. Pick the other unit system and your values convert on their own. Nothing gets lost.

Why does my 6 inch well hold so much more water than a 4 inch well?

Volume grows with the radius squared, not just the width. Going from 4 to 6 inches is 1.5 times wider but holds 2.25 times more water.

A 4 inch well holds about 0.65 gallons per foot of water. A 6 inch well holds about 1.47 gallons per foot.

What is the well screen and why does its length matter?

The screen is the slotted pipe near the bottom that lets groundwater flow in. Solid casing sits above it.

In Advanced Mode the tool counts the screen section on its own so it is not double-counted with the casing water column. Screen length is listed on your well report.

My bore hole diameter gives an error. What is wrong?

The bore hole must be bigger than the casing outer diameter. The drilled hole has to be wide enough for the casing plus the gravel pack.

Also make sure your casing inner diameter is smaller than the outer diameter. The pipe wall has to have thickness.

Can I use this for a dug well or cistern?

Yes, if it is round and straight up and down. Enter the inside width and treat depth and water level the same way.

Large hand-dug wells hold a lot of water, so double-check your numbers. For square or odd-shaped tanks, use a tank volume tool instead.

Should I round my purge volume up or down?

Always round up. Pumping a little extra costs you a few minutes. Pumping too little leaves stale water in the pipe and can ruin your test sample.
