What Is Engine RPM?

RPM stands for revolutions per minute. It tells you how many times your engine's crankshaft spins in one minute. When you press the gas pedal, your engine spins faster and the RPM goes up. When you ease off, it goes down. The RPM number on your dashboard tachometer shows this in real time.

How Vehicle Speed, Gears, and Tires Affect RPM

Three main things control how fast your engine spins at any given speed: your transmission gear ratio, your axle ratio (also called the ring and pinion ratio), and your tire diameter.

  • Transmission gear ratio – This is the gear your transmission is in. A higher number means the engine spins more times for each turn of the wheels.   • Axle ratio – This is the gear ratio inside your rear axle differential. A higher axle ratio like 4.10:1 gives you more pulling power but raises engine RPM. The RPM Formula

This calculator uses a standard drivetrain formula to find engine RPM:

RPM = (Vehicle Speed × Axle Ratio × Gear Ratio × 336) ÷ Tire Diameter

The number 336 is a constant that converts miles per hour and tire inches into revolutions per minute. Speed must be in MPH and tire diameter must be in inches for the formula to work correctly. What is the 336 constant in the RPM formula?

The number 336 is a conversion factor. It converts miles per hour and tire diameter in inches into revolutions per minute. It comes from the math needed to link linear vehicle speed to how many times the tire rotates, and then back through the gears to the engine. You do not need to calculate it yourself. What tire diameter should I enter?

How do I find my axle ratio?

What is a good RPM for highway cruising?

Why is my calculated RPM different from my tachometer?

Small differences are normal. Your actual RPM can vary due to tire wear, slight differences in true tire diameter, torque converter slip in an automatic, or rounding in the tachometer gauge. The calculator gives a theoretical result based on the exact values you enter.

What does the color badge next to my result mean?

The badge tells you if your RPM is in a healthy range. Green means efficient cruising range. Yellow means moderate but acceptable. Red means your RPM is high and you should review your gear setup. Gray means the RPM is very low.

Does this calculator account for torque converter slip?

No. This calculator gives the mechanical RPM based on gear ratios and tire size. Automatic transmissions with a torque converter can have some slip, which means your real RPM may be slightly higher than the calculated number, especially under load.
