Introduction

This Steel Pipe Weight Calculator tells you how much a pipe weighs. Just type in the outer diameter (OD), the wall thickness, and the length. The tool gives you the weight per foot or per meter, plus the total weight of the whole pipe.

You can work in imperial units (inches, feet, pounds) or metric units (millimeters, meters, kilograms). Switch between them any time, and your numbers convert for you. How to Use Our Steel Pipe Weight Calculator

Enter your pipe size, wall thickness, length, and material. The calculator gives you the weight per unit length, the total pipe weight, the inner diameter, and the density it used.

Unit System: Pick Imperial (in / ft / lb) or Metric (mm / m / kg). Your numbers change over on their own when you switch.

Wall Thickness (WT): Type how thick the pipe wall is. It must be less than half the outer diameter, or you will see an error. Use the inches to mm calculator if your wall data is in the other unit system.

Steel Pipe Weight: What It Means

Pipe weight is how heavy a piece of pipe is. A pipe is a hollow tube, so only the metal ring around the hole has weight. The more metal in that ring, the heavier the pipe.

Three things set the weight: the outer diameter (OD), the wall thickness (WT), and the length. A fourth thing, the density of the metal, tells you how heavy that metal is for its size.

Key Pipe Terms

  • OD – the distance across the outside of the pipe.
  • WT – how thick the metal wall is.
  • ID – the hole inside. ID = OD − (2 × WT).
  • NPS – "nominal pipe size," a name tag like 2" or 6". It is not the real OD for small sizes.
  • Schedule – a number like 40, 80, or 160 that sets the wall thickness. Higher schedule means thicker wall, more weight, and higher pressure rating. For one NPS, the OD stays the same and only the wall changes.

How Pipe Weight Is Found

First find the ring of metal, called the cross-section area:

Area = (π ÷ 4) × (OD² − ID²)

This is just the ring between two circles, the same idea used in the circle area calculator. Since the pipe is a hollow cylinder, the metal volume matches what the cylinder volume calculator finds for the outer tube minus the bore.

Then multiply by density to get weight per foot or per meter, and multiply again by the length to get total weight:

Weight per length = Density × Area
Total weight = Weight per length × Length

Quick Shop Formulas

Shops often use these fast checks for carbon steel:

  • Pounds per foot = 10.69 × (OD in inches − wall) × wall
  • Kilograms per meter = 0.02466 × (OD in mm − wall) × wall

Why Pipe Weight Matters

Note: this is the weight of the empty pipe. Water, oil, gas, or insulation adds more. Use the pipe volume calculator for the fluid inside and the pipe flow calculator when you also need flow rate or head loss. Welded pipe may also weigh a little more than the chart says, since real walls can vary by a few percent. Frequently asked questions

Why do I get an error when I type my wall thickness?

The wall must be less than half the outer diameter. If the wall is half the OD or more, there is no hole left, so the pipe is really a solid bar.

Check that both boxes use the same unit. A common mistake is typing the OD in inches and the wall in millimeters.

Why is the OD of a 2 inch pipe 2.375 inches and not 2 inches?

For sizes under 14 inches, NPS is only a name, not a real measurement. A 2" pipe always has an outside diameter of 2.375 in (60.3 mm).

From 14 inches up, the NPS number does match the true OD.

Does Schedule 80 pipe have a bigger outside diameter than Schedule 40?

No. For the same NPS, the OD stays the same. Only the wall gets thicker.

That means Schedule 80 has a smaller hole (ID), more metal, and more weight than Schedule 40.

How much does a 20 foot stick of 2 inch Schedule 40 steel pipe weigh?

About 73 lb (33 kg). That pipe weighs roughly 3.66 lb/ft (5.44 kg/m).

Pick NPS 2" — SCH 40 from the auto-fill list, type 20 ft for length, and the tool shows the exact number.

What does XXS mean in the schedule list?

XXS means double extra strong. It is a very thick wall used for high pressure or heavy abuse.

XXS pipe is much heavier than Schedule 40 of the same size, so always check the total weight before you lift it.

Can I use this tool for stainless schedules like 10S or 40S?

Yes. The OD is the same as carbon steel pipe, so pick the matching NPS size and then type the 10S or 40S wall thickness by hand.

Then choose Stainless Steel 304 or 316 as the material so the right density is used.

Why does galvanized steel show the same weight as carbon steel?

The zinc coating is very thin, so the tool uses the same steel density of 7,850 kg/m³.

Real galvanized pipe weighs about 3% to 5% more because of the zinc. Add a small margin if you need an exact shipping weight.

Can I use this for round tube instead of pipe?

Yes. Round tube is also a hollow circle, so the math is the same.

Just type the real OD and the real wall thickness. Skip the schedule list, since tube is sold by actual size, not by NPS.

What if I only know the inner diameter and the wall?

Add two walls to the ID to get the OD. So OD = ID + (2 × wall).

For example, an ID of 2.067 in with a 0.154 in wall gives 2.067 + 0.308 = 2.375 in OD.

Does the answer include water or other fluid inside the pipe?

No. The result is the weight of the empty pipe only.

Water inside adds a lot. To find the fluid weight, get the inside volume first, then multiply by the fluid density.

How close is this to the real weight of the pipe I buy?

Very close, usually within a few percent. Mills allow the wall to vary, often by about 12.5% on seamless pipe.

Weld seams, coatings, and end threads change the number a little too. For shipping, add a small safety margin.

What is the difference between tonne and US short ton in the results?

A tonne is 1,000 kg, or about 2,205 lb. A US short ton is 2,000 lb, or about 907 kg.

Pick the one your supplier or trucking company uses, or you may be off by about 10%.

Why do my numbers change when I switch between Imperial and Metric?

They do not really change. The tool converts your values so the pipe stays the same size.

For example, 3 in becomes 76.2 mm. Only the labels and units change, not the pipe.

Can I add a material that is not in the list?

Not directly. The list has carbon steel, stainless 304 and 316, aluminum, and galvanized steel.

For another metal, pick the closest one, then scale the answer. Multiply by your density divided by the density shown in the results.

Why does my result differ a bit from the shortcut formula?

The shortcut constants 10.69 and 0.02466 are rounded and built for plain carbon steel.

The main result uses the exact area and the true density, so it is more accurate. Use the main result and treat the shortcut as a quick check.

How do I find the weight for many pipes at once?

Add up the total length first. Ten sticks of 20 ft equals 200 ft.

Type that total in the length box. The tool then gives the weight for the whole lot.

What do the two charts show me?

The first chart shows how total weight grows as the pipe gets longer. It is a straight line, since weight and length rise together.

The second chart compares the same pipe made from each material, so you can see how much lighter aluminum is than steel.
