Introduction
This California Sales Tax Calculator tells you how much sales tax you owe and what your total will be. Type in your price and your local tax rate, then hit Calculate. You get the pre-tax amount, the tax, and the total in one click.
California has a base sales tax rate of 7.25%. That is the lowest rate in the state. Most cities and counties add district taxes on top, so the real rate you pay can go past 10%. This tool shows you each piece: the 6.00% state rate, the 1.25% local rate, and any extra district rate for your area.
You can work the math both ways. Use Exclude Sales Tax when you know the price before tax and want to find the total. Use Include Sales Tax when you have a receipt total and want to pull out the tax that was already added. If you only ever need the backward math, our Reverse Sales Tax Calculator handles that on its own.
There is more here than one quick answer. Look up a rate by street address or ZIP code, or let the tool use your current location. Add many items to the cart tool and mark which ones are taxable, since most groceries and prescription drugs are not taxed in California. Browse the 2026 city and county rate tables, sort them, search them, and download the whole list as a CSV file.
Shoppers, small business owners, and online sellers can all use this calculator to check a price, set a sale price, or plan for tax before they buy. If you sell online, pair it with the eBay Fee Calculator, the Etsy Fee Calculator, or the PayPal Fee Calculator to see what you really keep after tax and fees.

California Sales Tax: What You Need to Know
Sales tax is money you pay to the state when you buy most goods in California. The store adds it to your bill and then sends it to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA). The tax is based on where the item is delivered, not where the store's main office is.
How the California Sales Tax Rate Is Built
Every sale in California starts with a base rate of 7.25%. That base is made of two parts:
- 6.00% goes to the state.
- 1.25% goes to city and county funds.
Many cities and counties add their own district taxes on top. These pay for things like roads, schools, and transit. District taxes usually add 0.10% to 3.00%, so real rates around the state run from 7.25% up to about 10.75%. That is why Los Angeles pays more than Bakersfield, even though both are in California. To see how a rate change moves your bill, the Percentage Calculator and Percent Change Calculator come in handy.
What Is Taxed and What Is Not
Most physical items are taxable: clothes, electronics, furniture, cars, and restaurant meals. Some things are exempt, which means you pay no sales tax on them:
- Most cold groceries you cook or eat at home
- Prescription drugs
- Some medical devices
- Most plain services, like a haircut or legal advice
Hot prepared food, candy sold in some settings, and soda are usually taxable, even at a grocery store.
Tax on Top vs. Tax Inside the Price
There are two ways to work with sales tax. If you know the price before tax, you multiply it by the rate and add it on. If you only have the final receipt total, you can work backward to split it into the item price and the tax that was already inside it. Both methods use the same rate, just in a different order. Sellers setting a shelf price often run the numbers through the Markup Calculator or Margin Calculator first, then add tax here.
Use Tax on Out-of-State Buys
If you buy something from another state or online and no California sales tax is charged, you may owe use tax instead. The rate is the same as your local sales tax rate. You report it on your California income tax return, where the California Tax Calculator and the Income Tax Calculator can help you estimate what you owe.
Why Your Rate Matters
Using the wrong rate can throw off a budget, a business invoice, or a big purchase like a car. Rates change a few times a year when new district taxes start or end, so it helps to check your city and county rate before you plan a large buy or file a return. Buying a vehicle? Sales tax is part of the Out The Door Price Calculator along with DMV fees, and the Auto Loan Calculator shows what the taxed price does to your monthly payment.
