Introduction

This Missouri sales tax calculator shows how much tax you pay on a purchase and what your total will be. Missouri charges a 4.225% state sales tax. Cities, counties, and special districts add more on top. That means the combined rate you pay can range from 4.225% to about 10.1%, based on where you buy.

You can find your rate in three ways: type in a ZIP code, enter a street address, or type a rate yourself. Then enter your purchase amount. The calculator splits the tax into parts, so you can see how much goes to the state, the county, the city, and any special district.

It also works in reverse. If a price already has tax built in, pick "Tax Included" and the tool will back the tax out to show the pre-tax price — the same idea behind our Reverse Tax Calculator. A step-by-step section shows the math, and a chart shows where your money goes. Below the calculator, you can look up rates for major Missouri cities and counties, such as Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield, and Branson. If you need a nationwide version, try the general Sales Tax Calculator.

How to use our Missouri Sales Tax Calculator

Enter your location (or your own tax rate) and the price you are paying. The calculator shows your pre-tax amount, the Missouri sales tax, the total, a rate breakdown by state, county, city, and special district, plus the math steps.

Choose how to determine your rate: Pick ZIP Code Lookup, Address Lookup, or Manual Rate Entry. This sets which fields you fill in next.

ZIP Code: Type a 5-digit Missouri ZIP code (63001 to 65899), then click "Look Up Rate" to load the combined sales tax rate for that area.

Street Address: In Address Lookup, type the street address, such as 1200 Main St.

City: Type your Missouri city, like Springfield or Kansas City. Then click "Look Up Rate." You can also click "Use My Current Location" to fill this in for you.

State: This is locked to Missouri (MO). The tool covers Missouri only. For income tax withholding in the state, see the Missouri Paycheck Calculator.

Sales Tax Rate (%): In Manual Rate Entry, type any combined rate from 0% to 20%. It starts at Missouri's 4.225% state rate.

Purchase Amount: Enter the price in dollars, such as 250.00. If the item is on sale, run it through the Discount Calculator first to get the after-discount price.

Is sales tax already included? Choose "Tax Excluded" to add tax to your price. Choose "Tax Included" to pull the tax back out of a total you already paid.

Calculate and Reset: Click "Calculate" to see your results. Click "Reset" to start over with the sample values.

City and county rate tables: Filter or sort the Missouri city and county sales tax rate tables below, then click "Use" on any row to load that rate into the calculator.

Missouri Sales Tax Explained

Sales tax is a fee added to most things you buy. In Missouri, the store collects it at the register and sends it to the state. The Missouri state sales tax rate is 4.225%. But you almost never pay only that. Cities, counties, and special districts add their own tax on top. That is why the total rate you pay can be as low as 4.225% or as high as about 10.1%, depending on where you shop. Rates vary widely from state to state, which you can compare with our State Tax Calculator.

What Makes Up Your Rate

  • State tax (4.225%) – the same everywhere in Missouri.
  • County tax – set by the county you are in.
  • City tax – set by the city or town.
  • Special district tax – extra tax for things like a transit district, a fire district, or a shopping area called a TDD or CID.

Add these together and you get your combined rate. Two stores a few blocks apart can charge different rates because one sits inside a special district and the other does not. If you want to see how those layered rates average out across purchases, the Blended Rate Calculator can help.

How the Math Works

The tax is a percent of the price before tax. Change the percent to a decimal, then multiply:

Tax = Price × (Rate ÷ 100) and Total = Price + Tax

Example: a $250 item in a spot with an 8.85% rate. 250 × 0.0885 = $22.13 in tax, so you pay $272.13. If you want to practice the percent step on its own, use the Percentage Calculator.

If a price already has tax baked in, you work backward instead: Pre-tax = Total ÷ (1 + Rate). This is handy for receipts, cash registers, and bookkeeping when you need to split out the tax you owe the state. Retailers setting shelf prices often pair this with the Markup Calculator and the Margin Calculator.

Food and Other Special Cases

Missouri taxes most groceries at a lower state rate of 1.225% instead of 4.225%, but local taxes still apply on top. Prepared food, restaurant meals, candy, and soda are usually taxed at the full rate — when you are splitting a restaurant bill, the Tip Calculator is a useful companion. Prescription drugs are exempt. Cars are taxed based on where you live, not where you buy, so the rate on your title paperwork may not match the dealer's rate; estimate the rest of your vehicle costs with the Auto Loan Calculator and the DMV Fee Calculator.

Use Tax

If you buy from an out-of-state seller that does not collect Missouri sales tax, you may owe use tax instead. The use tax rate is usually the same as the sales tax rate where you live. Most large online sellers now collect it for you. Online sellers can also check their platform costs with the eBay Fee Calculator or the Etsy Fee Calculator.

Rates Change

Local voters can raise or lower their sales tax, and new districts get added. The Missouri Department of Revenue updates its rate tables every few months, usually in January, April, July, and October. For a legal filing or a big purchase, check the current rate for the exact address with the Department of Revenue before you file. To see how sales tax fits alongside your other obligations, look at the Income Tax Calculator, the Property Tax Calculator, and the Effective Tax Rate Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my ZIP code rate differ from the rate my store charged?

A ZIP code can cover more than one taxing area. One side of a street may sit inside a special district like a CID or TDD, and the other side may not. That can change your rate by 1% or more.

Use the store's exact address to get closer, or type the rate from your receipt into Manual Rate Entry.

What does "Tax Included" mean in this calculator?

It means the price you typed already has sales tax in it. The tool works backward and pulls the tax out.

For example, a $272.13 total at 8.85% becomes $250.00 pre-tax and $22.13 tax. Use this for receipts, cash sales, and bookkeeping.

Why is the tax on my groceries lower than this calculator shows?

Missouri taxes most groceries at a 1.225% state rate instead of 4.225%. Local city, county, and district taxes still apply.

To match a grocery receipt, subtract 3% from the combined rate and enter that number in Manual Rate Entry.

Does the calculator work for buying a car in Missouri?

Not directly. Car sales tax is based on where you live, not where you buy.

Look up the rate for your home address, then use Manual Rate Entry if needed. Title and registration fees are separate and are not included here.

What is a special district tax?

It is an extra local tax for a set area. Common ones are transit districts, fire districts, tourism areas, and shopping areas called TDDs or CIDs.

These can add anywhere from 0.125% to over 1% to your bill.

Why do my component amounts round to a penny difference?

Each part of the tax is rounded to the nearest cent. Sometimes those rounded parts do not add up to the total tax.

The tool adds the small leftover to the largest part so everything sums exactly. The step-by-step section tells you when this happens.

Can I use this calculator if I live outside Missouri?

The lookup tools only cover Missouri. But Manual Rate Entry accepts any rate from 0% to 20%, so you can enter your own state's rate and still get a correct total.

How do I find the rate for a small town not in the tables?

Try the ZIP code lookup first. If your ZIP has no city on file, the tool uses the county rate for unincorporated areas.

You can also check the Missouri Department of Revenue rate table for the exact address and type that number in manually.

What is the highest sales tax rate in Missouri?

About 10.1%. Branson has one of the highest combined rates because of tourism-related district taxes. The lowest possible rate is 4.225%, the state rate alone.

Does the calculator include shipping charges?

No. Just enter the amount you want taxed. In Missouri, shipping is usually not taxed if it is listed separately and is optional. If your seller taxes shipping, add it to the purchase amount.

Why is the state locked to Missouri in the address lookup?

This tool only holds Missouri rate data. Locking the field stops wrong results from other states. For other states, use a nationwide sales tax calculator instead.

How accurate is the "Use My Current Location" button?

It finds the nearest major Missouri city in the list and applies that city's rate. It is a quick estimate, not a rooftop match.

For exact tax on a legal filing or a large purchase, use the full street address.

Do I owe Missouri tax on online orders?

Usually yes. If the seller does not collect sales tax, you may owe use tax at about the same rate as your home address. Most big online stores collect it for you now.

How often do Missouri sales tax rates change?

The Missouri Department of Revenue updates its rate tables about four times a year: January, April, July, and October. Voters can approve new local taxes at any election, so check the current rate before a big purchase.

Can I calculate tax on a discounted price?

Yes. Sales tax in Missouri applies to the price after a store discount or coupon. Work out the sale price first, then enter that number as your purchase amount.

What is the difference between the city table and the county table?

The city table shows the full combined rate you pay inside that city, including state, county, city, and district tax.

The county table shows the lower rate for unincorporated parts of the county, with no city tax added.

Why does the tax not show up when I click Calculate?

You need both a loaded rate and a valid purchase amount. Click "Look Up Rate" after typing a ZIP or address, and make sure your amount is above zero. Any errors show in red near the field.

Are prescription drugs taxed in Missouri?

No. Prescription drugs are exempt from Missouri sales tax. Over-the-counter medicine is taxed at the full combined rate.
