Introduction
This Passport Fee Calculator shows how much a U.S. passport will cost you. Pick your age group, tell us if you are applying for the first time or renewing, and choose what you need — a passport book, a passport card, or both. You can also add expedited processing and fast delivery.
The tool splits your costs into two parts. One part goes to the U.S. Department of State. The other part goes to the place that accepts your form, like a post office or clerk of court. That second part covers the $35 acceptance fee and your passport photos. You pay these two parts separately, so it helps to see them apart.
The calculator also handles special cases. Kids age 15 and under must apply in person, so they pay the new-application rate. Adults renewing by mail with Form DS-82 skip the acceptance fee but still need a photo. If your passport was issued in the last year and your name changed, Form DS-5504 has no application fee at all.
You get a clear fee list, a step-by-step math breakdown, and a chart of where your money goes. Fees can change, so check travel.state.gov before you pay. If you are also filing immigration paperwork, our USCIS Fee Calculator covers those separate filing costs.
How to use our Passport Fee Calculator
Tell us who is applying, what kind of passport you need, and how fast you want it. The calculator shows your U.S. Department of State fees, your acceptance facility fees, a grand total, a step-by-step math breakdown, and a fee chart.
Applicant Age Group: Pick Adult if the applicant is 16 or older. Pick Minor if the applicant is 15 or younger. Minors pay lower book and card fees. Not sure which tier a child falls into on the day you apply? Check with the Age Calculator.
Application Type: Choose New Application if this is a first passport (Form DS-11). Choose Renewal / Reissue if you already have a passport.
Reason for Reissue: This drops down only for renewals. Pick expiring, lost or stolen, name change, or pages used up. Your reason sets the form and tells us if the $35 in-person fee applies.
Lost or Stolen Passport Status: If you picked lost, stolen, or damaged, say if that passport is already expired or still valid.
Passport Issued in the Past 12 Months: If you picked a name change, say yes or no. If yes, you use Form DS-5504 and pay no application fee.
Passport Products: Check the Passport Book for all travel by air, land, or sea. Check the Passport Card for land and sea trips to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. You can pick one or both.
Expedited Processing: Check this box to add $60 for faster handling. It is charged one time per application and covers the book and the card.
1–2 Day Delivery: Check this box to add $23.36 for fast return shipping. It works only with the Passport Book, since cards ship by first-class mail. If you want to compare mailing your forms in, the USPS Shipping Calculator and the Postage Calculator can price the outbound envelope.
Number of Applications / Applicants: Pick how many people are applying. Each one costs $35 at the acceptance facility. This box is turned off for mail-in renewals.
Number of Passport Photos: Pick how many photos you need to buy. Each photo costs about $12. You still need a new photo for mail-in renewals.
Click Calculate to see your totals, or click Reset to start over. Once you know the passport bill, fold it into your Trip Cost Calculator or Monthly Budget Calculator so nothing surprises you later.
U.S. Passport Fees Explained
A U.S. passport is not free. When you apply, you pay two separate bills. One bill goes to the U.S. Department of State for making your passport. The other bill goes to the place that accepts your paperwork, like a post office, a clerk of court, or a photo shop. Knowing both parts helps you bring the right money and avoid delays.
The Main Passport Fees
- Application fee: The cost of the passport itself. Adults (16 and older) pay more than minors (15 and younger).
- Execution (acceptance) fee: $35 per person, paid to the acceptance facility when you apply in person.
- Expedited processing: $60 to move your application to the front of the line. It is charged once per application, even if you order a book and a card.
- 1–2 day delivery: $23.36 to have your finished passport book mailed back fast. Passport cards always ship by first-class mail.
- Passport photos: About $12 for a set. Every applicant needs a new photo, even for a mail-in renewal.
Passport Book or Passport Card?
The passport book works for all travel, including flights to other countries. The passport card is cheaper, but it only works for land and sea trips to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. Many people buy both at the same time, which saves money because the expedite fee is only charged once. If your trip is a drive to Canada or Mexico, the Fuel Cost Calculator and Toll Calculator help price the road part of the journey; for flights, try the Flight Time Calculator.
New Application or Renewal?
First-time applicants use Form DS-11 and must apply in person, so they pay the $35 execution fee. Adults who still have their old passport in good shape can often renew by mail with Form DS-82. Mail-in renewals skip the $35 execution fee, but you still pay for a photo.
If your passport was lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply in person again with Form DS-11 and report the old one with Form DS-64. If your passport was issued in the last 12 months and your name or details changed, Form DS-5504 lets you get a corrected passport with no application fee — you only pay for extras like expedited service.
Passport windows book up fast, so count backward from your departure with the Days Until Calculator or the Business Days Calculator to see whether routine service is enough or you need to pay for expediting.
Rules for Children
Minors age 15 and younger cannot renew by mail. They must apply in person on Form DS-11 with both parents or guardians there. Their passports cost less but are only good for 5 years, while adult passports last 10 years. Renewing every five years for a child adds up — the Savings Goal Calculator makes it easy to set aside a little each month for the next round of family travel documents.
Good to Know
Acceptance facilities often take only checks or money orders for State Department fees, so call ahead. Passport fees are a government charge and are not subject to sales tax, but passport photos bought at a retail studio usually are. If you are moving abroad or relocating for work, the Moving Cost Calculator and Cost of Living Calculator put these document fees in context. Fees can change, so always check current prices at travel.state.gov before you mail your forms or visit a passport office.
