    How to Use Our Factorio Production Calculator

    Enter the items you want to produce and set up your factory settings. The calculator will tell you how many machines you need, what raw resources to gather, how much power you will use, and the full production chain for your factory.

    Item: Type the name of the item you want to craft. Pick from the dropdown list. Click "Add Item" if you want to produce more than one item at a time.

    Rate Unit: Choose whether your quantity means items per second, per minute, per hour, or full blue belts.

    Default Assembler: Choose which assembling machine your factory uses. Higher tiers craft faster and have more module slots.

    Factorio Production Calculator

    Factorio is a game where you build factories. You mine raw materials, craft them into parts, and use those parts to make more complex items. Every item in the game has a recipe. Each recipe takes time and needs specific ingredients. As your factory grows, figuring out how many machines you need gets hard fast.

    This Factorio calculator solves that problem. You tell it what item you want to produce and how many you need per minute. It then works backward through every recipe in the chain.     How Factorio Production Chains Work

    Most items in Factorio are not made in one step. For example, an advanced circuit needs electronic circuits, plastic bars, and copper cable. Each of those ingredients has its own recipe with its own ingredients. Copper cable needs copper plates, which need copper ore. This creates a tree of dependencies called a production chain. One item at the top can require dozens of machines producing different parts below it.

    Factorio lets you place modules inside machines. Speed modules make machines craft faster. Productivity modules give you bonus output from the same ingredients.     Belts, Pipes, and Throughput

    Items move around your factory on transport belts. Each belt tier has a maximum speed. Yellow belts carry 15 items per second, red belts carry 30, and blue belts carry 45. The Space Age DLC adds purple and green belts with even higher limits. Fluids like petroleum gas and sulfuric acid move through pipes, which have their own flow limits. This calculator checks your item rates against these limits and warns you when a single belt or pipe is not enough.

    Why does the calculator show a decimal number of machines?

    The decimal number shows the exact fraction of a machine's output you need. For example, 2.4 machines means you need more than 2 but less than 3. Since you cannot build part of a machine in Factorio, the calculator rounds up to 3 for the actual build count. The decimal is still useful because it tells you how much spare capacity that last machine will have.

    How do I add more than one item to produce at the same time?

    Click the "Add Item" button below the first item row. A new row will appear where you can type a different item name and set its own quantity and rate unit. The calculator will combine all items into one shared production chain and merge any ingredients they have in common.

    What is the difference between tree view and flat view?

    Tree view shows your production chain as a nested list. Each item expands to reveal its ingredients below it, like a family tree. Flat view shows a single merged table where every item appears only once with its total rate and machine count. Use tree view to understand the chain. Use flat view for a quick build list.

    How does the productivity module bonus work in this calculator?

    Productivity modules give you free extra output without using extra ingredients. For example, Productivity Module 3 adds a 10% bonus. If a recipe normally makes 1 item, it now effectively makes 1.1 items on average. This means you need fewer machines to hit your target rate, but each machine runs slower and uses more power. The calculator applies these bonuses automatically when you pick a module preset.

    How are beacon effects calculated?

    Each beacon shares 50% of its module's speed bonus with every machine in range. If you put a Speed Module 3 (+50% speed) in a beacon, each nearby machine gets a +25% speed boost from that beacon. Set the number of beacons per machine and the beacon module type in the configuration section. The calculator adds all beacon bonuses to each machine's effective crafting speed.

    What does the belt load column mean?

    The belt load column shows how much of a transport belt's capacity your item rate uses. For example, ×0.5 on a blue belt means you are using half of that belt. If the number goes above 1.0, you need to split the items across multiple belts. The calculator picks the smallest belt tier that can handle the load and warns you if even the fastest belt is not enough.

    Why do I see a pipe overflow warning for fluids?

    Pipes in Factorio have a maximum flow rate of about 1,200 units per second. If your production needs more fluid than a single pipe can carry, the calculator shows an overflow warning. To fix this in-game, split the fluid across multiple pipes or add pumps to boost flow.

    Does this calculator handle oil processing and byproducts?

    Yes. Oil refining produces multiple outputs at once — petroleum gas, light oil, and heavy oil. The calculator tracks these byproducts and shows them in the production chain. If you check the "Use byproducts as inputs" box, leftover outputs from one recipe can count toward ingredient needs elsewhere.

    What changes when I switch to the Space Age DLC ruleset?

    Switching to Space Age DLC (v2.x) updates the belt tier list. The base game has yellow, red, and blue belts. Space Age adds purple belts (60 items/s) and green belts (90 items/s). This affects belt load calculations and overflow warnings throughout the results.

    How is the power draw calculated?

    Each electric machine has a base power cost in kilowatts. The calculator multiplies this by the energy consumption modifier from your modules. Speed and productivity modules increase power use. Efficiency modules reduce it. The total is summed across all machines and shown in the Factory Summary. The power breakdown chart shows which machine types use the most energy.

    What does the pollution number mean?

    Every machine in Factorio produces pollution, which spreads across the map and attracts enemy attacks. The calculator estimates total pollution per minute based on each machine's base pollution rate and your module settings. Higher pollution means more frequent and stronger enemy waves, so this number helps you plan defenses.

    Can I use this calculator for megabase planning?

    The step-by-step section shows the full worked math for the first craftable item in your target list. It walks through converting rates, calculating effective speed with modules, finding output per machine, and dividing to get the machine count. This teaches you how the formula works so you understand the numbers in the rest of the results.

    What does the machine ratio number mean?

    When you check "Show Machine Ratios," each item gets a simplified ratio number. These numbers show the relative proportion of machines needed. For example, if iron gear wheels show ratio 2 and iron plates show ratio 3, you need 2 gear assemblers for every 3 plate furnaces. This helps you build balanced production blocks.

    How do I read the footprint number in the summary?

    The footprint shows the total tile area taken up by all your machines. It does not include belts, inserters, or spacing between machines. Use it as a rough guide for how much space your factory needs. Hover over the number to see an estimated grid size.
