Introduction

The Treadmill Calorie Calculator tells you how many calories you burn when you walk or run on a treadmill. Just enter your body weight, your speed, how long you worked out, and your incline. The tool calculates it for you.

You only need to fill in two of these three: speed, time, and distance. The calculator works out the third one on its own. You can use pounds, kilograms, or stones for weight, and miles or kilometers for distance.

Your results show calories burned, kilojoules, fat burned, and your MET value (a number that shows how hard the workout is). You also see how high you climbed on an incline, what your workout would look like on flat ground, and how many burgers or beers your calories match. Two charts and a step-by-step solution show exactly how the numbers were found.

The math uses the ACSM walking and running equations, which are trusted by trainers and health experts. You can also check a box if you are over 60 or if you use a curved, non-motorized treadmill, and the results will change to fit.

How to use our Treadmill Calorie Calculator

Enter your body weight, your treadmill speed, time, distance, and incline. The calculator shows the calories you burned, fat burned, your MET value, flat ground equivalent, height climbed, and a step-by-step solution.

Weight unit: Pick pounds, kilograms, or stones and pounds. The box changes to match your choice.

Weight: Type your body weight. Heavier bodies burn more calories at the same speed.

Speed unit: Choose mph, kph, mins/mile, or mins/km. Use the pace options if your treadmill shows pace instead of speed.

Speed: Type the belt speed from your treadmill screen. If you picked a pace unit, enter the minutes and seconds instead.

Time: Type how long you walked or ran as hh:mm:ss, or use the hours, minutes, and seconds boxes.

Distance unit: Choose miles, kilometers, or meters for your distance.

Distance: Type how far you went. You only need to fill in two of these three: speed, time, and distance. The calculator works out the third one for you and marks it as auto-calculated.

Incline % (grade): Type the incline shown on your treadmill. A higher incline burns more calories.

Incline angle (degrees): Use this if your machine shows degrees instead of percent. Filling in one incline box updates the other.

Over 60 years old: Tick this box if you are older than 60. It uses Older Adult Compendium MET values, which are a bit higher.

Curved / non-motorized treadmill: Tick this box if you use a curved treadmill. Incline is set to 0 and your calorie burn goes up, since these machines take more effort.

Treadmill Calories Burned: What It Means

When you walk or run on a treadmill, your body burns energy. We measure that energy in calories (kcal). The number of calories you burn depends on four main things: how much you weigh, how fast the belt moves, how steep the incline is, and how long you stay on the machine.

Why Body Weight Matters

A heavier body needs more energy to move. Two people can walk at the same speed for the same time, but the heavier person will burn more calories. That is why weight is the first thing this tool asks for. Your resting needs matter too. The BMR Calculator shows how many calories you use before any exercise is added.

How Speed and Incline Change the Burn

Faster speeds burn more calories per minute. Incline does the same thing, but in a different way. Walking at 3.5 mph on flat ground is easy work. Walking at 3.5 mph on a 10% incline is much harder, because you are also lifting your body weight upward with every step. A small incline is one of the fastest ways to burn more calories without going faster.

METs and the ACSM Equations

A MET is a way to score how hard an activity is. One MET is the energy you use sitting still, defined as 1 kcal per kilogram per hour or an oxygen uptake of 3.5 ml/kg/min.1 An activity that is 5 METs uses about five times that much energy. Sports science uses the American College of Sports Medicine's metabolic equations to turn treadmill speed and grade into oxygen use, then into METs and calories. There is one equation for walking and a different one for running, because running is a more efficient way to move fast. Fat Burned vs. Calories Burned

About 3,500 calories is the usual figure for one pound of body fat; Kevin Hall's analysis found the real energy content of lost weight depends on how much fat you start with.3 So a 300 calorie workout is close to one tenth of a pound by that rule. This is a rough guide, not a promise. Real fat loss also depends on what you eat, your sleep, and your hormones.

Curved and Non-Motorized Treadmills

On a curved treadmill, you power the belt yourself. There is no motor helping you, so the same speed costs you more energy; this calculator applies its own factor of 30% more. These decks have a fixed shape, so there is no incline setting to change.

Age and Calorie Burn

Older adults have a lower resting energy expenditure, so the Older Adult Compendium expresses activities as MET 60+ values against a resting baseline of 2.7 ml/kg/min.2 This calculator's over-60 option applies its own 10% uplift to the oxygen cost as a simplification of that adjustment.

Why Your Treadmill Screen Shows a Different Number

Most treadmill consoles guess your weight or ignore it completely. Many also skip incline in their math. That is why machine readouts are often too high. A calculation based on your real weight, speed, incline, and time gives a much closer answer.

Simple Ways to Burn More

  • Raise the incline 1–3% instead of only speeding up.
  • Add a few minutes to the end of your session.
  • Mix short fast blocks with easy walking blocks.
  • Do not hold the handrails. Leaning on them lowers your real effort.

Frequently asked questions

Do the results include the calories I would burn anyway just sitting?

Yes. The number shown is your total (gross) burn during the session. One MET, the resting rate, is defined as 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour.1 If you want the extra calories from exercise only, subtract that resting amount from the total.

How many calories does 30 minutes on a treadmill burn?

For a 165 lb (75 kg) person at 2% incline:

  • Walking 3.5 mph: about 183 kcal
  • Walking 4.5 mph: about 300 kcal
  • Running 6 mph: about 433 kcal

What does the Flat Ground Equivalent result mean?

It shows how fast and how far you would need to go on flat (0%) ground to work just as hard. Walking 3 mph up a 10% hill can feel like walking over 5 mph on flat ground. It is a simple way to see how much the incline is helping you.

What does the Height Climbed result show?

It shows how far you moved upward, like climbing stairs. The tool uses your distance and incline angle to find the vertical rise, then compares it to a building using 3 meters (about 10 feet) per story. If your incline is 0 or you use a curved treadmill, this box shows N/A.

Does holding the handrails change my calorie burn?

Yes, it lowers it. Leaning on the rails can cut your real burn by up to 20 percent, especially at steep inclines. This calculator assumes you are not holding on. Let go of the rails to match the numbers you see.

How much does the over 60 box change my result?

It raises your oxygen cost and calorie burn by 10 percent. The Older Adult Compendium rebases MET values for people over 60 on a resting oxygen uptake of 2.7 ml/kg/min.2 Only tick the box if you are older than 60.

Why did one of my input boxes turn orange?

Orange means the calculator filled that box in for you. You only need two of the three values: speed, time, and distance. The third one is worked out automatically. Click the orange box if you want to type your own value instead, and a different box will become the auto one.

What should I enter if I wear a weighted vest?

Add the vest weight to your body weight. If you weigh 160 lb and wear a 20 lb vest, enter 180 lb. This works well for vests and backpacks because the load moves with your body.

Is walking on an incline better than running on flat?

They can burn the same calories. Incline walking is easier on your knees and ankles because both feet stay closer to the deck. Running builds speed and heart fitness faster. Pick the one you can do often without pain.

What is kJ and why is it shown?

kJ means kilojoules, the metric unit for energy. Many countries and food labels use kJ instead of calories. One calorie (kcal) equals 4.184 kJ.

How many treadmill sessions equal one pound of fat?

One pound of fat is usually put at about 3,500 calories, a rule of thumb.3 If you burn 350 calories per session, that is about 10 sessions by that rule. Exercise alone is slow, so pair it with smaller food portions for faster results.

Do the results work for outdoor walking or running?

They are close for flat, calm days. Outdoors you also push against air and uneven ground, so you burn a bit more, especially when running fast or in wind. For hills outside, enter the average grade of your route.

What do the two charts show?

The first chart shows your calories adding up minute by minute, with a flat-ground line for comparison. The second chart compares your session to the same workout at other inclines, so you can see how much one or two percent of incline adds. On a curved treadmill, the second chart compares different speeds instead.
