How to use our Crushed Stone Calculator

What Is Crushed Stone?

Crushed stone is rock that has been broken into small pieces by a machine called a crusher. Unlike round river gravel, the pieces have sharp, jagged edges. Those edges lock together when packed down, so the stone stays put instead of rolling around. That is why crushed stone is the top pick for driveways, walkways, patio bases, drainage beds, and the base layer under pavers or concrete. Common Types of Crushed Stone

  • Limestone — light gray, easy to compact, and used a lot for driveways and base layers.
  • Granite — very hard and long lasting. Good for high traffic areas and decorative work.

  • Clean stone (#57, #68) — washed, with no fine dust. Water drains right through it, so it works well around pipes and in French drains.
  • Crusher run (#26, pug mill) — a mix of stone and stone dust. The dust fills the gaps, so it packs hard and makes a strong base.
  • Decorative stone — smaller rounded material such as pea gravel or river rock for beds and paths, and large rip rap for slopes and shorelines.

How Deep Should the Stone Be?

Depth matters as much as the size of your area. A layer that is too thin will spread apart, sink, or grow weeds through it.

  • 2–3 inches — decorative top layer, garden beds, and paths that only people walk on.
  • 4 inches — a normal top layer for a driveway or a base under pavers.
  • 6–8 inches — full driveway build, usually in two or three layers, with each layer packed down before the next goes on.

Why Stone Is Sold by Weight

You measure your project in volume (cubic yards or cubic meters), but most stone yards sell by the ton. To switch between the two, you need the density of the material — how much one cubic foot weighs. Most crushed stone falls between about 96 and 135 pounds per cubic foot. Heavier, dusty mixes like crusher run sit at the high end, and loose coarse stone sits at the low end. A rough rule: one cubic yard of crushed stone weighs about 1.3 to 1.5 tons. Always Order a Little Extra

Order about 5% to 10% more than the exact number. Ground is never perfectly flat, stone settles when you tamp it, and some spreads past the edges. A small extra amount costs far less than paying a second delivery fee for one missing wheelbarrow of rock.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of crushed stone equal one cubic yard?

Most 50 lb bags hold about half a cubic foot of stone. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so you need about 54 bags to make one cubic yard.

Bags cost much more per ton than bulk stone. If you need more than half a cubic yard, ordering loose stone by the ton is usually cheaper.

How much area does one ton of crushed stone cover?

It depends on how deep you spread it. For stone at 100 lb per cubic foot, one US ton covers about:

  • 2 inches deep — about 120 square feet
  • 3 inches deep — about 80 square feet
  • 4 inches deep — about 60 square feet
  • 6 inches deep — about 40 square feet

Heavier stone like crusher run covers less area per ton.

Does the calculator include extra stone for compaction?

Yes, through the overage box. The default 10% covers settling, packing down, and small spills. If you plan to run a plate compactor over a thick base, bump the overage up to 15% or 20%.

Why is my number different from my supplier's quote?

Almost always it is the density. Stone yards use their own weight per cubic foot, and wet stone weighs more than dry stone. Ask for their number and type it into the Material Density box. The volume in cubic yards will not change — only the tons.

Can I mix units, like feet for length and inches for depth?

Yes. Each box has its own unit menu. You can set length and width in feet, depth in inches, and still get correct results. The calculator converts everything for you before doing the math.

What is the difference between Total Volume and Recommended Order Volume?

Total Volume is the exact amount your area holds. Recommended Order Volume is that number plus your overage percent. Order the recommended amount — the exact number leaves no room for error.

How do I figure out an L-shaped or odd-shaped driveway?

Split it into simple parts. Run the calculator once for each rectangle, circle, or triangle, write down the tons, then add them up. Use the same depth and material for each part so the numbers match.

Can I use this calculator for a base layer and a top layer?

Yes. Run it twice. First set the base stone (like crusher run) at its depth, then run it again for the top stone (like #57) at its depth. The two layers usually use different materials, so the weights will differ.

Does the calculator account for gaps between the rocks?

Yes, in a way. The densities listed are bulk densities, which already include the air gaps between pieces. That is why crushed stone weighs about 100 lb per cubic foot instead of the 165 lb of solid rock.

Why is crusher run so much heavier than clean stone?

Crusher run has stone dust mixed in. The dust fills the gaps between the larger pieces, so a cubic foot holds more material and weighs more — about 135 lb versus 100 lb for clean stone. That is also why it packs hard and makes a strong base.

What density should I use if I do not know my stone?

Use 100 lb per cubic foot. That is a fair middle number for most crushed stone. Pick the closest material from the list and the calculator fills it in for you. Change it later if your supplier gives you a real number.

How many wheelbarrow loads is one cubic yard?

A small wheelbarrow holds about 2 cubic feet and a large one about 3 cubic feet. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so plan on 9 to 14 loads per cubic yard.

How much crushed stone can a pickup truck carry?

Stone is heavy. A half-ton pickup should carry no more than about half a cubic yard, which is close to 1,400 lb. A full-size three-quarter-ton truck can take about one cubic yard. For anything more, book a delivery.

Can I price my stone by the cubic yard instead of by the ton?

Does this work for pea gravel, river rock, or sand?

Yes. The math is the same for any loose material. Pick Custom in the material list and type in that material's density. Pea gravel is about 96 lb per cubic foot and dry sand about 100 lb per cubic foot.

Why does my weight change when I switch materials?

Because each rock type weighs a different amount per cubic foot. The volume in cubic yards stays the same — only the tons move. Always tell your supplier the material name along with the tons you want.

Is 10% overage enough for a driveway?

For flat, even ground, yes. Use 15% if the ground is rutted, sloped, or soft, or if the edges are open and stone can spread out. Running short means paying a second delivery fee, which costs more than the extra rock.
