A fraction shows a part of a whole, like 2/5. A percentage shows that same part out of 100. So "percent" just means "per 100." The Formula
Percentage = (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100
The top number of a fraction is the numerator. The bottom number is the denominator. Divide the top by the bottom to get a decimal, then multiply by 100 and add a percent sign.
Steps to Convert a Fraction to a Percent
- Simplify the fraction if you can. Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 4/10 becomes 2/5. You can check any GCD with the GCF Calculator.
- Divide the top number by the bottom number. 2 ÷ 5 = 0.4.
- Multiply by 100. 0.4 × 100 = 40
- Add the % sign. So 2/5 = 40%.
Mixed Numbers
A mixed number has a whole number and a fraction, like 1 1/2. Turn it into one fraction first: multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the numerator. For 1 1/2, that is (1 × 2) + 1 = 3, so you get 3/2. Then 3 ÷ 2 = 1.5, and 1.5 × 100 = 150%. Any fraction bigger than one whole gives a percent over 100%.
Negative Fractions
If the top or bottom number is negative, the answer is negative. If both are negative, the two minus signs cancel and the answer is positive. A minus sign on the whole number makes the whole mixed number negative.
Repeating Decimals
