What Is Arithmetic?

Arithmetic is the most basic branch of math. It deals with four main operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These are the building blocks for all other types of math. You use arithmetic every day when you count money, split a bill, measure ingredients, or figure out how long a trip will take.

The Four Basic Operations

Addition (+) combines two or more numbers into a larger total. Subtraction (−) takes one number away from another. Multiplication (×) is a fast way to add the same number many times. Division (÷) splits a number into equal parts.

Order of Operations

When a math problem has more than one operation, you must solve it in the right order. Multiplication and division always come before addition and subtraction. This rule keeps answers consistent no matter who solves the problem. This calculator follows that rule automatically.

Why Arithmetic Matters

Strong arithmetic skills help you in school, at work, and in daily life. Shopping, cooking, budgeting, and building all rely on quick, accurate calculations. A simple calculator like this one lets you check your work and solve problems faster when the numbers get large or tricky.

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator free to use?

Yes. This simple calculator is 100% free. There are no sign-ups, no downloads, and no hidden fees. Just open the page and start calculating.

Does the calculator work on my phone?

Yes. The calculator works on phones, tablets, and computers. You can also switch to the Mobile layout option for a better fit on small screens.

Can I use my keyboard to type numbers?

Yes. Press the number keys 0–9 on your keyboard to enter digits. Use +, -, *, and / for math operations. Press Enter or = to get your answer. Press Backspace to delete, and Esc to clear everything.

Does the calculator follow order of operations?

Yes. Multiplication and division are always solved before addition and subtraction. For example, if you type 2 + 3 × 4, the calculator gives you 14, not 20.

What happens if I divide by zero?

The calculator shows a "Cannot divide by zero" error message. Dividing by zero is not allowed in math, so no answer is given. Press AC to clear the error and start over.

How do I clear my calculation and start over?

Click the red AC button or press Esc, Delete, or End on your keyboard. This erases the current equation and resets the display to zero.

What does the yellow M badge mean on the display?

The yellow M badge means a number is stored in memory. It appears when you press M+ or M−. Press MC to clear the memory, and the badge will go away.

How do I reuse a past answer?

You have two ways. Click the Ans button to insert the result of your last calculation. Or scroll to the History section and click any past result to insert it into your current equation.

How many past calculations does the history save?

The history saves up to 15 of your most recent calculations. When the list is full, the oldest entry is removed to make room for new ones.

Does the calculator save my history after I leave the page?

No. Your history and memory are cleared when you close or refresh the page. If you need to keep a result, write it down or copy it before you leave.

How large of a number can I calculate?

The calculator handles very large and very small numbers. When a result is bigger than 1,000,000,000,000,000 or smaller than 0.000000001, it switches to scientific notation (for example, 1.5e+16).

What does the plus/minus (±) button do?

It switches the current number between positive and negative. For example, if the display shows 7, pressing ± changes it to -7. Press it again to go back to 7.

Can I chain multiple operations together?

Yes. You can type a long equation like 5 + 3 × 2 − 4 ÷ 2 and press = to get the final answer. The calculator solves multiplication and division first, then addition and subtraction.

Why does the answer update as I type?

The calculator uses live preview. It solves your equation in real time so you can see the result change with each number or operator you enter. This helps you spot mistakes before you press equals.

How do I make the calculator bigger or smaller?

Use the Size / Zoom dropdown at the top. You can pick Tiny, Small, Default, or Large. You can also click Full Screen to fill your entire screen.
