Introduction

A watt hour (Wh) tells you how much energy a device uses. It is power multiplied by time. If you run a 100-watt light for 10 hours, it uses 1,000 watt hours, or 1 kilowatt hour (kWh). That kWh number is what your power company charges you for.

What Is a Watt Hour?

A watt hour (Wh) is a unit of energy. It tells you how much power a device used over time. One watt hour means a device pulled 1 watt of power for 1 hour.

Watts measure power, which is how fast energy is used right now. Watt hours measure energy, which is the total amount used. Think of watts as speed and watt hours as distance traveled. The Power Calculator works the other direction, solving for watts when you already know the energy and the time.

The Watt Hour Formula

The math is simple:

Watt hours = Watts × Hours

A 60 W fan running for 5 hours uses 60 × 5 = 300 Wh of energy.

Watt Hours vs. Kilowatt Hours

A kilowatt hour (kWh) is just 1,000 watt hours. Power companies bill you in kilowatt hours, not watt hours. To switch between them, divide watt hours by 1,000. The kW Calculator is handy when you are working with larger loads measured in kilowatts.

So 300 Wh = 0.3 kWh. A megawatt hour (MWh) is 1,000 kWh, or one million watt hours. Big buildings and power plants use that unit.

How to Find the Cost

Multiply your kilowatt hours by the price your utility charges per kWh. If you use 0.3 kWh and pay $0.16 per kWh, the run costs about 5 cents.

Where to Find a Device's Wattage

Look at the label on the back or bottom of the device, or check the power brick. It may list watts directly. If it only lists volts and amps, multiply them: Volts × Amps = Watts. Use the running wattage, not the startup or surge number. Motors and fridges pull extra power for a second when they turn on, but that short burst adds very little energy. Surge watts do matter when you size backup power, so check the Generator Sizing Calculator for that job.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wh the same as W/h?

No. Watt hours are watts times hours, not watts divided by hours. W/h is not a real energy unit, so ignore it if you see it.

How do I turn battery mAh into watt hours?

Use this: Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × volts.

Example: a 5,000 mAh power bank at 3.7 V holds (5,000 ÷ 1,000) × 3.7 = 18.5 Wh.

How many watt hours can I bring on a plane?

Most airlines allow lithium batteries up to 100 Wh in carry-on with no approval. From 100 Wh to 160 Wh you usually need airline permission. Over 160 Wh is normally not allowed. Always check your airline first.

My fridge is 150 W but it does not run all day. What time should I enter?

Enter only the hours the motor actually runs. Fridges cycle on and off, often about 8 hours out of 24. So type 8 hours, not 24.

Does the calculator use power factor or efficiency?

No. It uses the real power in watts that you type in. If your label only shows VA, multiply VA by the power factor (about 0.9 for many home devices) to get watts first.

Why is my power bill higher than the cost shown here?

Your bill also has delivery fees, taxes, and sometimes higher rates after you pass a usage limit. This tool shows only the energy cost at the rate you enter.

What does the chart show?

It shows energy adding up from zero to your total during the run. The line is straight when power stays steady. If you enter a rate, a second line shows the cost climbing too.

What does the daily projection table assume?

It assumes the same run happens once a day: 7 runs a week, 30 a month, and 365 a year. If your device runs twice a day, double the numbers or double the time you enter.

Can I work backward and find watts from watt hours?

Yes. Watts = watt hours ÷ hours. If a device used 600 Wh in 4 hours, it pulled 150 W.

How do I change watt hours into amp hours?

Divide by the voltage: Ah = Wh ÷ volts.

Example: 100 Wh on a 12 V battery equals about 8.3 Ah.

If I pick days or weeks, does the device run nonstop?

Yes. One day counts as 24 running hours and one week as 168. Only use those units if the device really stays on the whole time.

Why can I enter horsepower or BTU/h?

Motors and pumps are often rated in horsepower, while heaters and air conditioners use BTU/h. The tool converts them for you. 1 hp = 745.7 W, and 1 BTU/h = 0.293 W.

What if the power changes while the device runs?

Use the average watts. Or split the job into parts, calculate each part, and add the watt hours together.

How can I measure my device's real watts?

Use a plug-in energy meter or a smart plug with power reading. It shows live watts and total kWh, which is more exact than the label.

Does standby power matter?

Yes. Try 3 W for 24 hours a day. That is 72 Wh a day, or about 26 kWh a year per device. Small watts over long hours still add up.

How do I estimate watt hours from a solar panel?

Multiply panel watts by sun hours, then take about 75% for losses. A 400 W panel with 5 sun hours makes 2,000 Wh on paper, or roughly 1,500 Wh in real use.

How long will a battery run my device?

Divide battery watt hours by device watts. A 500 Wh battery running a 50 W laptop lasts about 10 hours, a bit less after losses.

Why is my megawatt hour answer so tiny?

One MWh is a million watt hours, so home devices give very small numbers. Use kWh for homes and save MWh for big buildings or power plants.
