How to Use Our One Rep Max Calculator

What Is a One Rep Max?

Your one rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single rep with good form. It is the gold standard for measuring strength in powerlifting, weightlifting, and general strength training. Knowing your 1RM helps you pick the right weight for every workout. How Does This Calculator Work?

You enter a weight you already lifted and how many reps you completed. The calculator then uses a proven math formula to estimate your one rep max. You do not need to actually attempt a heavy single to find out your max. This makes testing safer, especially if you train alone or are new to lifting.

Which Formula Should I Pick?

This calculator offers six well-known formulas: Epley, Brzycki, Lombardi, Mayhew, O'Conner, and Wathan. Each one uses a slightly different equation, so the results will vary a little. Epley is the default because it works well for most lifters across most rep ranges. If you mainly test with low reps (1–5), Brzycki is also a strong choice. There is no single "perfect" formula — the best one is the one that most closely matches your actual max over time.

Why Your Rep Count Matters

These formulas are most accurate when you use a set of 10 reps or fewer. The higher the rep count, the less precise the estimate becomes. Sets above 15 reps can produce results that are noticeably off. For the best accuracy, use a weight heavy enough that you can only complete 3 to 6 reps. How to Use Your Results

Once you know your estimated 1RM, you can use percentages of it to plan your training. For example:

  • 90–100% of your 1RM builds max strength with very low reps.
  • 70–85% of your 1RM is the sweet spot for building muscle size (hypertrophy).
  • 50–65% of your 1RM builds muscular endurance with higher reps.

Tips for a More Accurate Estimate

  • Use a true max-effort set. The reps you enter should be taken to failure or very close to it. If you stopped with reps left in the tank, your estimate will be too low.
  • Warm up fully before your test set so fatigue or cold muscles do not limit you.
  • Pick a compound lift. These formulas were built for big barbell movements like the squat, bench press, and deadlift. They may be less accurate for isolation exercises.
  • Retest every few weeks. Your strength changes as you train, so update your numbers regularly to keep your program on track.

Is this one rep max calculator accurate?

What is the difference between Epley and Brzycki?

Epley uses a simple linear equation and works well across a wide range of reps. Brzycki uses a slightly different curve and tends to be very accurate for low rep ranges of 1 to 10. At higher reps the two formulas start to give different numbers. Both are good choices for most lifters.

Why do the six formulas give different results?

Each formula uses a different math equation to model the relationship between weight, reps, and your max. Some use a straight line, some use a curve, and some use an exponential model. Small differences in these equations lead to slightly different estimates. That is normal. The comparison table lets you see all six so you can judge the range.

How often should I retest my one rep max?

Every 4 to 8 weeks is a good guideline. Your strength changes as you train, so regular retesting keeps your training weights accurate. You do not need to attempt a heavy single each time — just do a hard set of 3 to 5 reps and enter the numbers here.

Is it safe to test a one rep max in the gym?

Training zones are percentage ranges of your 1RM that match different goals. For example, lifting at 90 to 100 percent of your max builds peak strength, while 70 to 80 percent builds muscle size. Why is my estimated 1RM different from my actual max?

Estimates are based on math formulas, not your actual body. Things like fatigue, sleep, nutrition, technique, and mental readiness all affect your true max. The estimate is a close guide, but your real 1RM on any given day may be a little higher or lower.

Does this calculator work for bodyweight exercises?

It can, but only if you add external weight. For example, if you do weighted pull-ups with 50 pounds added, enter your body weight plus the extra 50 pounds as the total weight. The formulas do not work well for pure bodyweight movements with no added load.

What happens if I enter 1 rep?

If you enter 1 rep, the calculator returns the same weight you entered. One rep at a given weight means that weight is already your estimated one rep max. No formula adjustment is needed.

Can I switch between pounds and kilograms?

Yes. You can enter your weight in either pounds or kilograms using the dropdown next to the weight field. You can also display your results in either unit by opening Advanced Settings and choosing LB or KG under "Display results in."

Why is 36 reps the maximum allowed?

Beyond 36 reps, the estimation formulas become very unreliable. Some formulas produce errors or impossible numbers at high rep counts. Limiting the input to 36 keeps the results within a useful and trustworthy range.
