Introduction

This triathlon calculator shows your finish time before you race. You pick a race distance, type in your swim pace, bike speed, and run pace, and add your transition times. The tool then gives you each split and your total time.

You can use it for a Super Sprint, Sprint, Olympic, Half-Ironman (70.3), Ironman (140.6), or your own custom course. Work in kilometers or miles. You can also flip it around: enter the split times you want, and the calculator tells you the pace you need to hit them.

The results include a table of every leg, a chart that shows how your race time is split up, and a step-by-step math breakdown. How to use our Triathlon Calculator

What Is a Triathlon?

A triathlon is one race with three sports in a row: swim, then bike, then run. The clock never stops. It keeps running while you change gear between sports. Those gear changes are called transitions, and they count toward your finish time.

The Five Parts of Race Day

  • Swim — usually in a lake, river, or ocean. Pace is measured per 100 meters (or 100 yards).
  • T1 — swim to bike. You pull off your wetsuit, put on a helmet and shoes, and grab your bike.
  • Bike — measured in speed, like kilometers per hour or miles per hour.
  • T2 — bike to run. You rack the bike, swap shoes, and go.
  • Run — pace is measured per kilometer or per mile.

How Split Times Work

A split is the time for one part of the race. The math is simple: time equals distance divided by speed. For pace, it flips around: time equals distance times pace. Why Pacing Matters

The bike leg eats up about half of your race time in most triathlons. The run is next, and the swim is the smallest slice. That means small changes in bike speed move your finish time a lot. But going too hard on the bike can wreck your run, so most athletes hold back a little and save legs for the last leg. Tips for a Faster Finish

  • Practice transitions. Losing two minutes in T1 and T2 is free time you can win back with no extra fitness.
  • Swim straight. Look up and sight buoys. Open water has no lane lines, and extra meters cost real minutes.
  • Ride steady. Even effort beats hard surges, especially on hills.
  • Start the run slow. Your legs feel heavy for the first kilometer. That is normal.

Real races are not perfect. Wind, hills, heat, water current, wetsuit rules, and crowded courses all shift your splits. Frequently asked questions

Does the finish time include T1 and T2?

Yes. The clock in a triathlon never stops, so both transitions are added to your total. The calculator adds swim + T1 + bike + T2 + run to get your finish time.

T1 and T2 show up in the results table as their own rows, but they have no distance or pace since they are not a sport leg.

What do the Typical, Aggressive, and Check Value tags mean?

They are quick sanity checks on the pace or speed you typed.

  • Typical — your number sits in the normal range for that race distance.
  • Aggressive — it is fast. Possible, but you need to be fit and trained for it.
  • Check Value — it looks too fast, too slow, or maybe a typo. Look again before you plan a race around it.

The bands shift with distance. A speed that is normal for a Sprint bike leg is aggressive for an Ironman.

How do I work backwards from a goal finish time?

Switch Calculation mode to Time → Pace. Then type the split times you want for the swim, bike, and run, plus your T1 and T2. The calculator fills in the pace and speed you need for each leg.

Try a few combos. If the paces come back tagged Check Value, your goal may be out of reach for now, so shift some time to another leg.

Why did my race preset switch to Custom?

Because you edited a distance. The presets hold fixed numbers, so the moment you change the swim, bike, or run distance, the tool marks it as a Custom course.

This is handy for real races that are a little long or short, like a 1.2 mile swim or a 56 mile bike. Click a preset button any time to snap back to standard distances.

Can I use yards for the swim instead of meters?

Yes. Pick Imperial (miles) in the Units box. Your swim pace then reads as minutes and seconds per 100 yards, which matches most short-course pools in the US.

A 100 yard split is about 9% faster than the same effort over 100 meters, since 100 yards is only 91.44 meters. The calculator handles that math for you when you switch units.

What is a good transition time?

For most age-group racers, 1 to 3 minutes each is normal. Fast racers hit under a minute. Big races with long runs to the bike racks can take 4 minutes or more.

Ironman transitions are usually slower because of changing tents and full kit changes. Plan 4 to 8 minutes each there.

What is an average triathlon finish time?

Rough age-group averages, all legs and transitions included:

  • Sprint: 1:20 to 1:45
  • Olympic: 2:40 to 3:15
  • Half-Ironman (70.3): 6:00 to 6:45
  • Ironman (140.6): 12:30 to 13:30

Courses, weather, and cutoffs move these a lot. Use them as a rough check, not a rule.

How accurate is this calculator?

The math is exact. Your times are exactly what you get if you hold the paces you typed for the whole race.

Race day is messier. Hills, wind, heat, crowded swim starts, and slowing down late in the run all add time. Most people finish a bit slower than a flat-pace plan, so build in a small buffer.

Why is the bike leg such a big share of my total time?

Because it is by far the longest distance. In an Olympic race, the bike is 40 km out of 51.5 km. The chart usually shows it near half of your total time.

That is why a small bike speed change moves your finish time so much. Add 1 km/h to a 40 km ride and you save over 2 minutes.

What does the % of Total Time column tell me?

It shows how much of your race each part eats up. It is split time divided by total time, times 100.

Use it to spot where your time really goes. If T1 and T2 add up to 4% of your race, that is free time you can win back by practicing transitions instead of training harder.

Should I use my pool swim pace or a slower one?

Use a slower one for open water. Most people swim 5 to 15 seconds slower per 100 m in a lake or ocean than in a pool.

Waves, sighting, no wall push-offs, and swimming a bit off-line all cost time. A wetsuit gives some of that back, so if the race allows one, the gap gets smaller.

Can I use this for a duathlon, aquabike, or relay?

The tool needs a distance above zero for all three legs, so it will not drop a sport for you.

Workaround: set the leg you are skipping to a tiny distance, like 0.01 km, and note that its split is near zero. For a relay, each teammate can plan their own leg and you can add the splits by hand.

What are the biggest numbers I can enter?

Swim goes up to 50, bike up to 500, and run up to 200 in your chosen unit. Bike speed caps at 120 km/h or mph.

Split time boxes take 0 to 23 hours, 0 to 59 minutes, and 0 to 59 seconds. Anything outside those limits shows a red message under the field.

Why does my split time change when I type a pace?

The pace box and the split time box are linked. Change one and the other updates right away, using your distance.

The box with the Primary input badge is the one you are driving. The other shows Calculated. Switch which is which with the Calculation mode dropdown.

Does the calculator handle hills, wind, or heat?

No. It uses steady, flat-course math only.

To plan a hilly or hot race, lower your bike speed and add seconds to your run pace, then see how the finish time moves. Testing a few slower versions is smarter than hoping for your best-case day.

Why does the tool convert everything to meters in the steps?

Meters and seconds keep every leg on one scale, so the math lines up no matter what unit you picked.

The step-by-step section shows each conversion, then the divide or multiply, then the final add. You can check any number yourself with a calculator.

How should I split effort between the three legs?

A common plan: swim controlled, ride steady, then run as strong as your legs allow.

The swim is the smallest slice of your day, so sprinting it costs more than it gains. Hold a little back on the bike too. Riding 1 km/h too hard can cost you several minutes on the run.

Can I print or save my race plan?

There is no save button, but you can print the page or take a screenshot of the results table.

Many racers write their target splits on a strip of tape and stick it on the bike top tube. Keep the paces simple, like one number per leg.
