Introduction

Want to know what year you were born based on your age? This birth year calculator makes it simple. Just type in your age, pick a date, and tell us if your birthday has passed this year or not. The tool does the math and gives you your estimated birth year in seconds.

You can enter your age in years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, or even seconds. The calculator converts it all for you. Along with your birth year, you will also see your generational cohort (like Gen Z or Millennial), your Chinese zodiac animal, and the age you will turn next year. A step-by-step breakdown shows exactly how the answer was found, and a chart helps you see where your birth year falls among different generations.

This tool is helpful when you know someone's age but not the exact year they were born. It is also useful for filling out forms, checking records, or just satisfying your curiosity. Pick your options below and hit Calculate to get started.

How to Use Our Birth Year Calculator

Enter your age and a few simple details below. The calculator will tell you the year you were born, your generation, and your Chinese zodiac animal.

My Age: Type your current age into this box. You can enter any number from 0 to 150. If you are not sure of your exact age, try our age calculator to find it from a known birth date.

Unit: Pick the unit your age is in. Most people will choose "Years," but you can also use months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, or seconds.

On This Date: Choose the date your age applies to. It defaults to today, but you can pick any date you want. You can use our date calculator if you need help working with specific dates.

The Selected Date Is: Tell the calculator if the chosen date falls before or after your birthday this year. This helps it find the exact birth year instead of being off by one.

Press the Calculate button to see your results. Press Reset to clear everything and start over.

What Is a Birth Year Calculator?

A birth year calculator figures out the year you were born based on your current age and today's date. It works by subtracting your age from the current year. If you have not had your birthday yet this year, the calculator also adjusts by one year to give you the right answer. If you want to find the exact number of days or months between two dates instead, our date duration calculator can help with that.

Why Your Birth Year Matters

Your birth year tells you more than just how old you are. It connects you to a generational cohort, which is a group of people born around the same time. Examples include Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z. People in the same generation often share similar experiences and cultural moments. Your birth year also determines your Chinese zodiac animal, which is part of a 12-year cycle used in Chinese astrology. Each animal — such as the Rat, Dragon, or Tiger — has its own set of personality traits. You can also explore your Western zodiac sign or dive deeper into your birth chart for more astrological insights based on your birth details.

How Birth Year Is Calculated

The math behind finding your birth year is simple. You take the current year and subtract your age. For example, if you are 10 years old and you have already had your birthday this year, you subtract 10 from the current year to get your birth year. If your birthday has not happened yet this year, you subtract one more year. This is because you have not officially turned a year older yet. If you want to compare birth years or ages between two people, our age difference calculator is a handy companion tool.

Age in Different Units

Most people know their age in years, but age can also be measured in months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, or even seconds. To find a birth year from these smaller units, the calculator first converts them into years. It does this by dividing by the number of those units in one year. For instance, there are 12 months in a year, so an age of 120 months equals 10 years. If you need to count specific weeks between dates, our weeks calculator can help, and for counting days our days since calculator lets you find exactly how many days have passed since any date.

Frequently asked questions

What if I do not know whether my birthday has passed this year?

If you are not sure, pick After my birthday this year. This is the default setting and works for most people. If the result looks off by one year, switch to Before my birthday this year and recalculate.

Can I use this calculator for someone else?

Yes. Just enter the other person's age and choose the correct date and birthday status for them. The calculator will estimate their birth year the same way it does for you.

Why does the result show two possible ages for this year and next year?

Your age changes once a year on your birthday. The calculator shows the age you turn this year and the age you will turn next year so you can see both at a glance.

Is the birth year result exact?

The result is an estimate. It gives you the correct year as long as you enter your age accurately and choose the right birthday status. It does not tell you the exact month or day you were born.

Why does changing the birthday status shift my birth year by one?

If your birthday has not happened yet this year, you are still one year younger than you will be after it passes. The calculator subtracts an extra year to account for this, which shifts the birth year back by one.

Can I enter my age in seconds or minutes?

Yes. Pick Seconds or Minutes from the Unit dropdown. The calculator divides your value by the number of seconds or minutes in a year to convert it into years, then finds your birth year.

What is the generational cohort shown in the results?

A generational cohort is a group of people born in the same range of years. Examples include Baby Boomers (1946–1964), Generation X (1965–1980), Millennials (1981–1996), and Generation Z (1997–2012). The calculator matches your birth year to the right group.

How is the Chinese zodiac animal determined?

The Chinese zodiac follows a 12-year cycle. Each year is linked to an animal like Rat, Ox, Tiger, or Dragon. The calculator uses your estimated birth year to find which animal matches that year in the cycle.

What does the chart in the results show?

The chart displays generational cohorts as horizontal bars on a timeline. A dashed vertical line marks your estimated birth year so you can quickly see which generation you belong to.

What is the reference table at the bottom of the page?

The reference table lists ages from 0 to 100 along with the estimated birth year and generation for each age. If you entered a valid age, your row is highlighted in yellow so you can spot it easily.

Can I pick a past or future date instead of today?

Yes. Change the On This Date field to any date you want. The calculator will use that date's year as the reference year instead of the current year.

What is the maximum age I can enter?

You can enter any age value from 0 to 150. If your age is in a unit other than years, the converted value in years should also fall within a reasonable range.

Can I enter a decimal age like 25.5 years?

Yes. The calculator accepts decimal numbers. It uses the whole number part (the number before the decimal point) to find your birth year. For example, 25.5 years is treated as 25 full years for the subtraction.

Why does the Next Birthday Year sometimes show this year?

If you chose Before my birthday this year, your next birthday still falls in the current year. So the calculator shows the current year as your next birthday year instead of next year.
