Introduction

This free minutes calculator helps you add, subtract, and compare time values in minutes. Type in your numbers, and it does the math for you right away. You can add up several minute values, subtract one from another, or find the exact time difference between a start time and an end time.

The tool shows your answer in total minutes, hours and minutes, days, and even seconds. It also gives you a step-by-step breakdown so you can see how the math works. Whether you need to track work hours, plan a schedule, or solve a homework problem, this minutes calculator makes time arithmetic quick and simple.

How to Use Our Minutes Calculator

Enter minute values to add or subtract, or enter two times to find the difference between them. The calculator gives you the total in minutes, hours, days, and seconds, along with a step-by-step solution and a visual chart.

Add or Subtract Minutes

Choose the number of rows: Use the plus and minus buttons or type a number between 2 and 20 to set how many minute values you want to work with.

Pick what to show in results: Check or uncheck the boxes for Hours + Minutes, Days + Hours + Minutes, or Total Seconds to control what appears in your results.

Enter your minute values: Type a number into each row. The first row is always your starting value. For every other row, use the dropdown to pick + Add or − Subtract.

Click Calculate: Press the Calculate button to see your total. Press Clear to erase all values and start over.

Time Difference

Pick the time span type: Choose Same Day if both times fall within one day. Choose Multiple Days if the times are on different dates.

Enter the start time: Type or select the time you want to start from. If you chose Multiple Days, also pick a start date. Press the Now button to fill in the current time automatically.

Enter the end time: Type or select the time you want to end at. If you chose Multiple Days, also pick an end date. Press the Now button to fill in the current time automatically.

Click Calculate: Press the Calculate button to see how many minutes are between your two times. Press Clear to reset both fields.

What Is a Minutes Calculator?

A minutes calculator is a tool that helps you add, subtract, or find the difference between chunks of time measured in minutes. Instead of doing the math by hand, you type in your values and get an instant answer in minutes, hours, days, and seconds. For broader time arithmetic beyond minutes, our time calculator lets you work with hours, minutes, and seconds together.

How Minutes Fit Into Time

A minute is a unit of time equal to 60 seconds. There are 60 minutes in one hour and 1,440 minutes in a full day. Because time uses groups of 60 instead of groups of 10, adding and subtracting minutes is harder than regular math. For example, 90 minutes is not 0.9 hours — it is 1 hour and 30 minutes. If you need to express time values as decimals for payroll or billing, our time to decimal calculator can handle that conversion.

Adding and Subtracting Minutes

When you add minutes together, you combine multiple time amounts into one total. This is useful when you track work shifts, study sessions, exercise routines, or cooking steps. Subtracting minutes lets you remove break time or find out how much time is left. Once you have a total, you can convert it into hours and minutes by dividing by 60. The whole number is your hours, and the remainder is your leftover minutes. For a more detailed look at elapsed time spans, try our time duration calculator.

Finding the Time Difference in Minutes

The time difference between two clock times tells you how many minutes passed from one moment to another. To find it, convert each time to minutes past midnight, then subtract the earlier time from the later one. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the period crosses midnight. In that case, you add 1,440 minutes (one full day) to get the correct answer. Our dedicated time difference calculator can also handle this if you want to compare times across different time zones or formats. When you need to count the number of days between two dates rather than minutes, the date duration calculator is a helpful companion tool.

Common Minute Conversions

  • 1 minute = 60 seconds
  • 60 minutes = 1 hour
  • 1,440 minutes = 1 day (24 hours)
  • 10,080 minutes = 1 week

When You Might Need Minute Math

Minute calculations come up more often than you might think. Employees add up minutes on a timesheet — our time card calculator and work hours calculator are built for exactly that. Students track study time across subjects. Runners log training minutes each week, often alongside a pace calculator to monitor performance. Cooks add prep time and cook time to plan a meal. If you need to figure out how many business days fall within a span, or count weeks between two dates, those tools pair well with this one. In each case, getting a fast and accurate total saves effort and prevents mistakes.

Formulas used

Total Minutes (Add/Subtract)
T = v_1 \pm v_2 \pm v_3 \pm \cdots \pm v_n
Convert to Hours and Minutes
h = \left\lfloor \frac{|T|}{60} \right\rfloor, \quad m = |T| - h \times 60
Convert to Days, Hours and Minutes
d = \left\lfloor \frac{|T|}{1440} \right\rfloor, \quad h = \left\lfloor \frac{|T| - d \times 1440}{60} \right\rfloor, \quad m = |T| - d \times 1440 - h \times 60
Convert Minutes to Seconds
S = |T| \times 60
Time to Minutes After Midnight
M = h \times 60 + m
Same-Day Time Difference
\Delta = M_{\text{end}} - M_{\text{start}} + \begin{cases} 1440 & \text{if } M_{\text{end}} < M_{\text{start}} \\ 0 & \text{otherwise} \end{cases}

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter decimal minutes like 30.5?

Yes. The calculator accepts decimal values. Type any non-negative number such as 30.5 or 12.75 into a row, and the tool will include it in your total.

What happens if the end time is earlier than the start time in Same Day mode?

The calculator treats it as an overnight period that crosses midnight. It adds 1,440 minutes (a full 24-hour day) to the end time so you get the correct elapsed time. A note will appear to let you know.

Is there a limit to how many rows I can add?

You can use between 2 and 20 rows. Use the plus and minus buttons next to the row count, or type a number directly into the box.

Do the results update on their own, or do I have to press Calculate?

In the Add / Subtract tab, results update as you type. You can also press the Calculate button. In the Time Difference tab, results update automatically whenever you change a time or date field.

Can I mix adding and subtracting in the same calculation?

Yes. Each row after the first has a dropdown where you pick + Add or − Subtract. You can mix them in any order you like.

What does the Now button do?

The Now button fills in the current time from your device. If you are in Multiple Days mode, it also fills in today's date.

Can the total be negative?

Yes. If you subtract more minutes than you add, the total will be negative. The result will show in red so it is easy to spot.

What is the difference between Same Day and Multiple Days mode?

Same Day mode only asks for a start time and an end time on one day. Multiple Days mode adds date fields so you can find the minutes between two different dates and times.

How do I convert the result to hours and minutes?

The calculator does it for you. Check the Hours + Minutes box in settings, and the result will show your total split into hours and leftover minutes.

When does the Days breakdown appear?

The Days + Hours + Minutes row shows automatically when your total is 1,440 minutes or more (that is one full day). You can also force it on by checking the Days + Hours + Minutes box in settings.

Can I leave some rows blank?

Yes. Blank rows are skipped. The calculator only uses rows that have a number in them.

What does the donut chart show?

The chart breaks your total into days, hours, and remaining minutes. Each slice shows what share of the total it represents as a percentage.

Does this calculator work on phones and tablets?

Yes. The layout adjusts to smaller screens, so you can use it on any phone, tablet, or computer with a web browser.

How are seconds calculated?

The calculator multiplies your total minutes by 60 to get the total in seconds. Check the Total Seconds box in settings to see this value in the results.

Does the calculator account for time zones or daylight saving time?

No. It works with the plain clock times and dates you enter. It does not adjust for time zone changes or daylight saving time shifts.
