How to use our Mileage Cost Calculator
Enter your trip distance, how many people are riding, and details for up to three vehicles. The calculator shows your total trip cost, fuel or energy used, cost per person, cost per mile and kilometer, CO₂ emissions, and which car is cheapest.
Unit System: Pick Imperial (miles and gallons) or Metric (kilometers and liters). Switching changes every number you already typed.
One-Way Trip Distance: Type how far it is one way, then pick miles or kilometers. Not sure how far it is? Check the Driving Distance Calculator or the ZIP Code Distance Calculator first.
Trip Type: Leave the switch on for a round trip to double the distance. Turn it off for a one-way drive.
People Sharing the Cost: Type how many people will split the gas money. Use 1 if you drive alone.
Currency Symbol: Choose the money symbol you want to see, like $, €, or £. Enter your fuel prices in that same currency.
Mileage Reimbursement Rate: Type the rate your job pays per mile or per kilometer. The default is the 2025 IRS rate of $0.70 per mile.
Electricity Grid CO₂ Intensity: Type how much CO₂ your power grid makes per kWh. This only affects electric cars.
CO₂ Display Unit: Choose pounds or kilograms for the emissions results.
Vehicle Name: Give each car a short name so you can tell them apart in the table and charts.
Fuel Type: Pick regular, mid-grade, premium, diesel, or electric. This sets the CO₂ math and the price units.

What Is Mileage Cost?
Mileage cost is how much money you spend on fuel or electricity to drive a certain distance. Every mile you drive burns a little fuel, and that fuel costs money. When you add it all up for a whole trip, you get your trip cost.
The Simple Math Behind It
Only three numbers matter:
- Distance – how far you drive. For a round trip, double the one-way distance.
- Fuel efficiency – how far your car goes on one gallon, one liter, or one kWh.
- Price – what you pay per gallon, per liter, or per kWh.
Divide the distance by your efficiency to get how much fuel you need. Then multiply that by the price. For example, a 200-mile trip in a car that gets 25 MPG uses 8 gallons. Gas Cars vs. Electric Cars
Gas and diesel cars are rated in MPG (miles per gallon) or L/100 km. Electric cars are rated in mi/kWh or kWh/100 km. Electricity usually costs less per mile than gas, because home power rates are often cheaper and electric motors waste less energy. Splitting the Cost
If friends or coworkers ride along, the fuel cost can be shared. Divide the total by the number of people. Mileage Reimbursement
If you drive for work, your job may pay you back by the mile instead of paying for fuel. The IRS business standard rate was 70 cents per mile in 2025. CO₂ From Driving
Burning fuel makes carbon dioxide. One gallon of gasoline makes about 19.6 pounds of CO₂, and one gallon of diesel makes about 22.4 pounds. Electric cars make no CO₂ from the tailpipe, but the power plant that made the electricity may still make some. How much depends on your local grid.
