Introduction

This Concrete Mix Calculator tells you how much concrete you need for a slab, patio, driveway, walkway, or footing. Type in the length, width, and depth of your pour, or just enter the total volume if you already know it. The calculator does the math and shows your answer in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters. How to use our Concrete Mix Calculator

Enter the size of your pour, pick your mix, and the calculator shows how much concrete you need, how many bags to buy, the cement, sand and gravel amounts, and an estimated cost.

Dimensions or Volume tab: Pick Dimensions if you know the size of the slab. Pick Volume if you already know how much concrete you need.

Concrete Mix: What It Is and How It Works

Concrete is made from four things: cement, sand, gravel (stone), and water. Cement is the glue. Sand fills the small gaps. Gravel gives the concrete its bulk and strength. Water starts a chemical change called hydration that makes the mix harden into rock. Getting the amounts right is what makes a slab strong instead of weak and crumbly.

Mix Ratios and Concrete Grades

A mix ratio like 1:2:4 means 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 4 parts gravel by volume. More cement means more strength. Each ratio matches a grade, such as M15, where the number is the strength in megapascals (MPa) after 28 days of curing.

  • 1:5:10 (M5) and 1:4:8 (M7.5) — weak fill, blinding layers, under footings.
  • 1:3:6 (M10) — light paths, small pads, garden work.
  • 1:2:4 (M15) — the common all-around mix for patios, walkways, and sheds.
  • 1:1.5:3 (M20) — driveways, garage floors, and slabs that hold weight.
  • 1:1:2 (M25) — columns, beams, and other structural jobs.

Wet Volume vs. Dry Volume

The space you fill is the wet volume. But dry cement, sand, and gravel are full of tiny air pockets. When you add water, those pockets collapse and the pile shrinks. So you must buy more dry material than the hole holds. Builders multiply the wet volume by about 1.54 (or 1.57 for richer mixes) to get the dry volume they need to order.

Slab Thickness

Thickness controls how much concrete you need and how much load the slab can carry. Common choices:

  • 3 inches (7.6 cm) — walkways and foot traffic only.
  • 4 inches (10.2 cm) — patios, sheds, and most home slabs.
  • 6 inches (15.2 cm) — driveways, RV pads, and heavy vehicles.

Bagged Concrete Yields

Pre-mixed bags already have cement, sand, and gravel inside. You just add water. Each bag makes a set amount of wet concrete:

  • 40 lb bag ≈ 0.30 cu ft
  • 60 lb bag ≈ 0.45 cu ft
  • 80 lb bag ≈ 0.60 cu ft
  • 25 kg bag ≈ 0.0125 m³

That means one cubic yard takes about 45 bags of 80 lb mix. High-strength and crack-resistant mixes yield a little less per bag because they are denser.

Why You Add a Waste Factor

Real job sites are never perfect. Some concrete spills, the ground under the slab dips, and forms bulge a little. Adding 5% to 10% extra keeps you from running short in the middle of a pour, which can leave a cold joint and a weak spot. For rough or uneven subgrades, go higher.

Bags or Ready-Mix?

Bags work well for small jobs, usually under 1 cubic yard. Past that, mixing by hand takes too long and the pour can set unevenly. For larger slabs, a ready-mix truck is cheaper and gives a more uniform result. Most suppliers have a minimum order of about 1 cubic yard. Quick Tips for a Strong Pour

  • Do not add extra water to make the mix easier to move. More water means weaker concrete.
  • Compact the base gravel before you pour so the slab does not settle and crack. Size that base layer with the Pea Gravel Calculator and plan the dig with the Excavation Calculator.
  • Keep the fresh slab damp for several days. Curing builds most of the strength.
  • Use control joints about every 8 to 12 feet so cracks form where you want them.

  • Concrete weighs about 4,000 lb per cubic yard (2,400 kg per m³). Plan your hauling.

Frequently asked questions

Does the mix ratio change how many pre-mixed bags I need?

No. Bag counts come from your volume and how much wet concrete each bag makes. The mix ratio only changes the cement, sand, and gravel breakdown for mixing your own batch.

The Mix Type buttons do change bag counts a little. High-strength bags are denser, so each one fills slightly less space.

Should I use the bag count or the cement, sand, and gravel numbers?

Use one, not both.

  • Bag count — you buy pre-mixed bags and just add water.
  • Material breakdown — you buy cement, sand, and gravel loose and mix them yourself.

Both cover the same pour, so buying both would double your order.

Does the 3", 4", and 6" table use the depth I typed in?

No. That table always shows all three standard slab thicknesses for your area, so you can compare them.

How much water do I add to a bag of concrete mix?

About 2.5 to 3 quarts (2.4 to 2.8 liters) for an 80 lb bag. Always check the label, since brands differ.

Add water a little at a time. Stop when the mix holds its shape on a shovel. Extra water is the fastest way to make weak concrete.

Why does the calculator show cement in 94 lb bags?

A standard bag of Portland cement weighs 94 lb and holds about 1 cubic foot. That makes the math simple: cubic feet of cement equals bags of cement.

Can I use this calculator for footings, posts, or round holes?

Yes. Work out the volume first, then type it into the Volume tab.

What if my slab is not a rectangle?

Break the shape into rectangles, add the areas together, and type the total into the Area box. Leave length and width blank.

Can I enter feet for length and inches for depth?

Yes. Every field has its own unit menu. You can use feet for length, inches for depth, and meters for width if you want.

The calculator converts everything for you and shows the answer in cubic feet, cubic yards, and cubic meters.

Can I set the waste factor to 0%?

You can, but it is risky. Running out mid-pour leaves a cold joint, which is a weak line in the slab.

Use 5% for a clean, flat base and 10% or more for rough or uneven ground.

Does the cost estimate include delivery, tax, or labor?

No. It multiplies your bag count by the price you type in, and nothing else.

Add sales tax, delivery fees, mixer rental, rebar, and gravel base on your own to get a true project cost.

Does the calculator include rebar, forms, or the gravel base?

No, it only figures the concrete. Those items are priced and sized separately.

Do I need to subtract space taken up by rebar or wire mesh?

No. Steel takes up very little room in a slab, and the waste factor already covers small differences like this.

How is the total weight worked out?

Fresh concrete weighs about 2,400 kg per cubic meter, or roughly 4,000 lb per cubic yard. The tool multiplies that by your volume with waste added.

Why do I need more bags of high-strength mix?

High-strength and crack-resistant mixes are packed tighter, so each bag makes a bit less wet concrete. An 80 lb bag yields about 0.59 cu ft instead of 0.60 cu ft.

Over a big pour that adds up to a few extra bags.

Can I mix different bag sizes in one pour?

Yes, as long as they are the same product. Many people buy mostly 80 lb bags and a few smaller ones to top off.

Do not blend standard mix and high-strength mix in the same slab. Strength will not be even.

When can I walk or drive on a new slab?

Light foot traffic is usually fine after 24 to 48 hours. Wait about 7 days for cars, and 28 days for full strength.

Keep the surface damp for the first few days. Curing is where most of the strength comes from.

How do I turn cubic yards of sand and gravel into tons?

Most yards sell by weight. Sand runs about 1.3 to 1.4 tons per cubic yard and gravel about 1.4 to 1.5 tons.

How many bags is too many to mix by hand?

Past about half a cubic yard, roughly 30 bags of 80 lb mix, hand mixing gets slow and the slab can set unevenly.

At 1 cubic yard or more, a ready-mix truck is usually cheaper and gives a better finish.

My slab is thicker at the edges. How do I handle that?

Figure the extra edge beam as its own small volume and add it, or raise the waste factor to about 15%.

Thickened edges are common on patios and sheds, and they are easy to forget when ordering.
