What Is Quilt Binding?

Quilt binding is the strip of fabric that wraps around the raw edges of a finished quilt. It covers the quilt top, batting, and backing all at once. Binding keeps the edges from fraying, protects the quilt from wear, and gives it a clean, finished frame.

How Much Binding Do You Need?

Binding must go all the way around the quilt, so you start with the perimeter: add the width and the length, then double it. After that, add 10 to 12 extra inches. That extra fabric is used to join the strips and to close the loop where the binding starts and ends.

Fabric comes off the bolt about 40 to 44 inches wide, so one strip is never long enough on its own. You cut several strips and sew them end to end into one long piece. Divide the total binding length by your usable fabric width, then round up. That number tells you how many strips to cut.

Binding Strip Width

The strip width is the width you cut before folding. The most common choice is 2½ inches. Folded in half, it makes a double-fold binding with two layers of fabric on the quilt edge, which wears well and lasts a long time.

  • 1½" to 2": thin, narrow binding for small quilts, table runners, and mini quilts.
  • 2¼" to 2½": the standard for most quilts.
  • 3" to 4": wider binding for thick batting, puffy quilts, or a bold edge.

Straight-Cut vs. Bias Binding

Straight-cut binding is cut across the grain of the fabric, selvage to selvage. It is quick, uses less fabric, and works great on any quilt with straight edges and square corners.

Bias binding is cut at a 45° angle to the grain. That angle lets the strip stretch and bend, so it hugs curved, rounded, or scalloped edges without puckering. Bias binding also wears more evenly over the years, because the threads cross the quilt edge instead of running along it. It does take more fabric. Many quilters cut bias strips from one big square, slicing it in a spiral to make one long strip with fewer seams.

Diagonal vs. Straight Seams

When you sew strips together, you can join them two ways. A diagonal seam (also called a mitered join) sews the strips at a 45° angle. This spreads the bulk of the seam out so it does not make a lump on the quilt edge. It does eat up a little extra fabric at every join, so plan for that. A straight seam joins the ends square across. It is faster and wastes no fabric, but it makes a thicker spot that can be hard to sew through.

Flange Binding

Flange binding uses two different strips of fabric sewn together instead of one. When the binding is folded, a thin line of the second color peeks out along the edge like a tiny piping accent. Each strip is cut about half the normal width, plus a bit more for the seam that joins them.

Buying Fabric

Fabric is sold by the yard, so binding yardage is figured in yards. Shops usually cut to the nearest quarter yard, so round up. Buying a little extra is smart. It covers cutting mistakes and shrinkage after prewashing, and it lets you redo a strip that comes out short.

Frequently asked questions

How much binding do I need for a queen size quilt?

A queen quilt is about 90 by 108 inches. The perimeter is 2 × (90 + 108) = 396 inches. Add 12 inches of extra for joins and the closing seam, so you need about 408 inches of binding.

At 42 inches of usable fabric width, that is about 10 to 11 strips. Cut at 2½ inches wide, plan on buying about ¾ to 1 yard of fabric.

How much binding does a baby quilt need?

A common baby quilt is 36 by 52 inches. The perimeter is 2 × (36 + 52) = 176 inches. Add 12 inches for joining, so you need about 188 inches.

That is 5 strips cut selvage to selvage. At 2½ inches wide, buy about ½ yard of fabric.

How many binding strips can you cut from one yard of fabric?

One yard is 36 inches long. Divide that by your strip width:

  • 2½ inch strips: 14 strips
  • 2¼ inch strips: 16 strips
  • 2 inch strips: 18 strips

At 2½ inches, those 14 strips sewn end to end give about 588 inches of binding, enough to go around most large quilts twice.

What is the difference between single fold and double fold binding?

Single fold binding is one layer of fabric on the quilt edge. The raw edge is tucked under before you stitch it down. It is thinner and good for small projects or thin batting.

Double fold binding is folded in half before you sew it on, so two layers cover the edge. It is much stronger and is the normal choice for bed quilts that get washed a lot.

How wide is the finished binding from a 2½ inch strip?

A 2½ inch strip folded in half gives 1¼ inches. Sew it on with a ¼ inch seam and the binding shows about ⅜ inch on the front and about ⅜ inch on the back.

Want a narrower edge? Cut 2¼ inch strips for about a ⅓ inch finish, or 2 inch strips for a very slim edge.

What seam allowance do you use to sew binding onto a quilt?

Use a ¼ inch seam for 2¼ and 2½ inch binding. That is the standard for quilting cotton.

If you cut wider strips, like 3 inches for puffy batting, use a ⅜ inch seam so the binding still wraps snugly over the edge without flopping.

How do you join the two ends of binding at the end?

Leave about 8 to 12 inches of binding loose where you start and stop. Lay the two tails flat so they meet in the middle.

Overlap them by the same amount as your cut strip width, so 2½ inches for a 2½ inch strip. Trim, then sew the ends together at a 45° angle. Press the seam open and stitch the last part down.

What size square do you need for bias binding?

Multiply the binding length you need by the strip width, then take the square root. Add about 10% for safety.

Example: you need 292 inches of 2½ inch binding. 292 × 2.5 = 730. The square root of 730 is about 27, plus 10% is about 30 inches. So cut one 30 by 30 inch square and slice it on the 45° grain.

Can you use jelly roll strips for quilt binding?

Yes. Jelly roll strips are cut 2½ inches wide, which is the standard binding width. Each strip is about 42 to 44 inches long.

Divide your total binding length by 42 to see how many you need. A 60 by 80 inch quilt needs about 292 inches, so grab 7 or 8 strips. Mixing prints makes a fun scrappy edge.

Should you prewash fabric before making binding?

Match what you did with the quilt top. If you prewashed the top and backing, prewash the binding fabric too. If you did not, leave the binding unwashed.

Cotton can shrink 2 to 3% in the first wash. If only the binding shrinks, it pulls the quilt edges in and makes them wavy.

How much extra fabric does a diagonal seam use per join?

A diagonal join uses about 1.4 times your strip width at each seam. For 2½ inch strips, that is roughly 3½ inches lost per join.

Join 8 strips and you have 7 seams, so about 25 inches disappears. That is why you should count the seams before you cut, or you may end up one strip short.

Do you need bias binding for a quilt with square corners?

No. Straight-cut binding works fine on any quilt with straight edges and square corners, and it uses less fabric.

Save bias binding for curved, rounded, or scalloped edges, since the 45° cut lets the strip stretch and bend without puckering. Some quilters also use bias on heirloom quilts because it wears more evenly over many years.
