What EOC Score Do I Need?

Introduction

This EOC Calculator helps you find your final grade when you have an End of Course exam. Just pick your grades for each quarter, your midterm, and your EOC score. The tool does all the math for you and shows your final letter grade right away.

EOC exams count as a big part of your final grade. A State Final EOC is worth 30% of your grade, while a District Final EOC is worth 10%. The rest comes from your quarter grades and midterm. Because the weight is so large, your EOC score can raise or lower your final grade by a lot.

This calculator also shows you a full step-by-step breakdown of how your grade is calculated. You can see how many points each part is worth and how much each one adds to your total. There is even a reverse calculator that tells you what EOC score you need to reach the final grade you want. If you need to figure out your grade for a single class without an EOC component, try our Grade Calculator instead.

How to Use Our EOC Calculator

Enter your exam type, quarter grades, midterm grade, and EOC score below. The calculator will show your final letter grade, total weighted points, percentage, and a full step-by-step breakdown of how your grade was found.

Exam Type: Pick the type of final exam you took. Choose "State Final EOC" if your EOC counts for 30% of your grade. Choose "District Final EOC" if your EOC counts for 10% of your grade.

Quarter 1: Select the letter grade you earned in Quarter 1. Options range from A to F.

Quarter 2: Select the letter grade you earned in Quarter 2. Options range from A to F.

Midterm: Select the letter grade you earned on your midterm exam. Options range from A to F.

Quarter 3: Select the letter grade you earned in Quarter 3. Options range from A to F.

Quarter 4: Select the letter grade you earned in Quarter 4. Options range from A to F.

EOC Score (0–5): Select the score you earned on your End-of-Course exam. Scores range from 0 (not taken) to 5 (exceeds standards). Each score maps to a letter grade that is used in the final calculation.

Once all fields are filled in, press the Calculate button. Your final grade, a weighted breakdown table, a bar chart, and a reverse lookup showing what EOC score you need for each possible final grade will appear below.

What Is an EOC Exam?

EOC stands for End-of-Course. It is a test you take at the end of a class to show what you learned. Most states require EOC exams for core subjects like math, science, and English. Your EOC score counts as part of your final grade for that class.

How Does the EOC Affect Your Final Grade?

Your final grade is not just your EOC score. It is a mix of your quarter grades, your midterm exam, and your EOC score. Each part has a weight, which tells you how much it counts. A higher weight means that part matters more. To understand how weights work in grade calculations, see our Weighted Grade Calculator.

There are two common types of EOC exams:

  • State Final EOC: The EOC counts for 30% of your final grade. Your classwork counts for 70%.
  • District Final EOC: The EOC counts for only 10% of your final grade. Your classwork counts for 90%.

Because the state EOC has a bigger weight, it can raise or lower your final grade more than a district EOC can.

How Is the Final Grade Calculated?

Each quarter grade and your midterm are turned into a number on a 4.0 scale. That number is multiplied by the weight for that part. If you want to learn more about how letter grades translate to a 4.0 scale, our GPA Calculator explains the process. Your EOC score (rated 0 to 5) is also converted to a letter grade and weighted the same way. All the weighted points are added up using a weighted average. The total tells you your final letter grade.

Why Use This Calculator?

Doing this math by hand takes time and mistakes are easy to make. This calculator does all the work for you. Just enter your grades and EOC score, and it shows your final grade right away. It also shows you what EOC score you need to reach a specific grade, so you can set a goal before your test. If you are looking to figure out your overall grade across an entire semester, check out our Semester Grade Calculator. For students preparing for standardized tests like the SAT or ACT, we also have an SAT Score Calculator and an ACT Score Calculator to help you estimate those scores. And if you want to see how your grades affect your cumulative average, our High School GPA Calculator can help with that.

Frequently asked questions

What grades can I pick in the EOC Calculator?

For each quarter and your midterm, you can pick A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D, or F. For the EOC score, you can pick a number from 0 to 5. Each EOC number matches a letter grade. For example, a 5 or 4 equals an A, a 3 equals a B, a 2 equals a C, a 1 equals a D, and a 0 equals an F.

What is the difference between a State Final EOC and a District Final EOC?

A State Final EOC makes your EOC exam worth 30% of your final grade. A District Final EOC makes your EOC exam worth only 10%. The rest of your grade comes from your quarter grades and midterm. Ask your teacher which type your class uses.

What does the reverse calculator do?

The reverse calculator shows you what final grade you would get for each possible EOC score (0 through 5). It helps you figure out the minimum EOC score you need to reach the final grade you want, like an A or a B.

Can my EOC score change my final grade even if my quarter grades are good?

Yes. For a State Final EOC, the exam is worth 30% of your grade. A low EOC score can pull a strong grade down, and a high EOC score can bring a weak grade up. The reverse calculator section of this tool shows you exactly how each EOC score would change your final grade.

How are letter grades turned into numbers?

Each letter grade is turned into a multiplier on a 4.0 scale. An A equals 1.000, B+ equals 0.875, B equals 0.750, C+ equals 0.625, C equals 0.500, D+ equals 0.375, D equals 0.250, and F equals 0.000. The multiplier is then multiplied by the weight and by 4 to get your weighted points for that part.

What do the weighted points mean?

Weighted points show how much each part of your grade adds to your final total. Your final grade is based on a 4.00-point scale. Each component (like Q1 or the EOC) earns a share of those 4 points based on its weight. The higher your weighted points, the better your final grade.

What EOC score do I need to pass?

It depends on your quarter grades and midterm. Use the "What EOC Score Do I Need?" section at the bottom of the calculator. It shows the minimum EOC score needed to earn each final letter grade based on the grades you already entered.

What happens if I did not take the EOC exam?

If you did not take the EOC, select 0 – Not Taken / Refused from the EOC score dropdown. This counts as an F for the EOC portion of your grade and will lower your final grade.

Does this calculator work for all subjects?

This calculator works for any class that uses the standard EOC weighting system with four quarters, a midterm, and an EOC exam. It covers subjects like Algebra, Biology, U.S. History, English, and more, as long as your school uses either the 30% or 10% EOC weight.

Why does my final grade not match what my teacher showed me?

Some schools use slightly different weights or grading scales. This calculator uses the most common EOC weights: 30% for state exams and 10% for district exams. If your school uses different weights, your result here may not match exactly. Check with your teacher for your school's exact grading policy.

What do the EOC scores 0 through 5 mean?

Each EOC score has a meaning:

  • 5 – Exceeds Standards (A)
  • 4 – Meets Standards (A)
  • 3 – Approaches Standards (B)
  • 2 – Developing (C)
  • 1 – Beginning (D)
  • 0 – Not Taken or Refused (F)

Can I use this calculator on my phone?

Yes. The EOC Calculator works on phones, tablets, and computers. The layout adjusts to fit your screen size so you can use it anywhere.

How do I reset the calculator?

Click the Reset button. It will set all fields back to their default values so you can start over with new grades.

Is there a way to see how each part of my grade adds up?

Yes. The Per-Component Weighted Breakdown table shows every part of your grade. It lists the grade you entered, the weight, the points earned, the max points possible, and a progress bar for each component. There is also a bar chart that shows this visually.
