Introduction

This Final Grade Calculator helps you figure out what you need on your final exam or what your overall grade will be after the exam. It works in three simple modes. First, you can find out what score you need on your final to reach the grade you want. Second, you can see what your overall grade will be if you already know how you did on the final. Third, you can calculate your weighted average across all your class categories like homework, quizzes, midterms, and the final exam. Just enter your numbers, hit calculate, and get your answer right away. Each mode also shows a chart so you can see how different scores change your grade.

How to Use Our Final Grade Calculator

This calculator helps you figure out your grades. Pick one of three modes, type in your numbers, and get your answer right away.

Mode 1: Final Exam Needed

This mode tells you what score you need on your final exam to reach your goal grade.

Current Grade: Enter the grade you have in the class right now as a percent. You can find this in your gradebook or by asking your teacher. If you need help figuring out your current standing, our Grade Calculator can help you work that out.

Desired Grade: Enter the overall grade you want to end the class with as a percent. For example, type 90 if you want an A-.

Final Exam Weight: Enter how much your final exam counts toward your total grade as a percent. Check your syllabus to find this number.

Click Calculate to see the score you need on your final exam. The chart below shows how different final exam scores would change your overall grade.

Mode 2: Overall Grade from Final

This mode tells you what your final course grade will be after you take your final exam.

Current Grade: Enter the grade you have in the class right now as a percent.

Expected Final Exam Score: Enter the score you think you will get on your final exam as a percent.

Final Exam Weight: Enter how much your final exam counts toward your total grade as a percent.

Click Calculate to see your predicted overall grade and letter grade. The chart shows how your overall grade changes based on different final exam scores.

Mode 3: Weighted Average

This mode calculates your overall grade using all your graded categories like homework, quizzes, and exams. If you want a dedicated tool for this type of math, you can also try our Weighted Average Calculator.

Category: Type the name of each grading category, such as Homework, Quizzes, Midterm, or Final Exam.

Score: Enter the grade you earned in that category as a percent.

Weight: Enter how much that category counts toward your total grade as a percent. All weights should add up to 100. If you need help working with percentages, our Percentage Calculator is a handy resource.

Click Add Category to add more rows. Click the trash icon to remove a row. Click Calculate to see your weighted average grade and letter grade. The chart shows how your grade weight is split across categories.

What Is a Final Grade Calculator?

A final grade calculator helps you figure out what score you need on your final exam to get the grade you want in a class. It uses a simple math formula that takes your current grade, the grade you want to end up with, and how much your final exam counts toward your total grade. With those three numbers, it tells you exactly what you need to score. For a broader look at how your grades stack up across an entire semester, check out our Semester Grade Calculator.

How Final Grades Are Calculated

Most classes split your grade into parts called categories. For example, homework might be worth 20% of your grade, quizzes 15%, a midterm 30%, and the final exam 35%. Each category has a weight that shows how much it matters. Your overall grade is found by multiplying each score by its weight, adding those numbers up, and dividing by the total weight. This is called a weighted average. You can use our Average Calculator to quickly compute simple averages, or our Weighted Average Calculator for more complex setups.

Here is the basic formula to find what you need on your final exam:

Final Exam Score Needed = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Exam Weight)) ÷ Final Exam Weight

For example, if your current grade is 82%, you want a 90% overall, and your final is worth 20% of your grade, you would need a 114% on the final. That is impossible, so you would know to aim for a lower target.

Why This Tool Is Useful

Knowing what you need on your final exam helps you study smarter. If you only need a 70% to keep your grade, you can spend less time stressing. If you need a 98%, you know to study hard or adjust your goal. This calculator takes the guesswork out of grade planning so you can focus on what matters most. Once you have your final grades locked in, you can use our GPA Calculator to see how they affect your overall GPA, or try the College GPA Calculator and Weighted GPA Calculator for more detailed breakdowns. If you are preparing for standardized tests alongside your finals, tools like the SAT Score Calculator, ACT Score Calculator, or Test Grade Calculator can also come in handy.

Frequently asked questions

What if the calculator says I need more than 100% on my final?

That means your goal grade is too high to reach with just the final exam. The calculator will show you the highest overall grade you can get if you score a perfect 100% on the final. You may need to lower your target grade.

Where do I find the weight of my final exam?

Check your class syllabus. It usually lists how much each part of your grade is worth. You can also ask your teacher or look in your online gradebook for this information.

What does weight mean in grading?

Weight is how much a category counts toward your total grade. If your final exam has a weight of 30%, that means it makes up 30% of your entire course grade. Higher weight means that category affects your grade more.

Do my weights need to add up to 100%?

Yes, ideally your weights should total 100%. If they don't, the calculator still works but it will normalize the result based on the weights you entered. It will also warn you that the total is not 100%.

Can I use this calculator for classes that don't have a final exam?

Yes. Use the Weighted Average mode. Enter all your grading categories like homework, projects, quizzes, and tests with their scores and weights. The calculator will give you your overall grade without needing a final exam.

What letter grade scale does this calculator use?

It uses a standard US letter grade scale: A+ is 97–100, A is 93–96, A- is 90–92, B+ is 87–89, B is 83–86, B- is 80–82, C+ is 77–79, C is 73–76, C- is 70–72, D+ is 67–69, D is 63–66, D- is 60–62, and F is below 60.

What if my class uses a different grading scale?

The percentage results are still accurate no matter what scale your class uses. Just compare the percentage the calculator gives you to your class's own grading scale to find your letter grade.

Can I enter extra credit scores above 100%?

Yes. The score fields accept values above 100. If you earned extra credit in a category, just type the actual score you received, even if it is higher than 100%.

How do I remove a category in Weighted Average mode?

Click the red trash icon on the right side of the row you want to remove. That category will be deleted and will no longer count in your calculation.

What is the difference between Mode 1 and Mode 2?

Mode 1 tells you what score you need on your final to reach a goal grade. Mode 2 tells you what your overall grade will be after you take the final. Mode 1 works backward from a target. Mode 2 works forward from a known or expected score.

Does this calculator save my data?

No. All calculations happen right in your browser. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere. If you refresh the page, the fields will reset to their default values.

What does the chart in Mode 1 show?

It shows a line graph of how different final exam scores would affect your overall course grade. A dashed line marks your target grade so you can see where the two lines meet.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes. The calculator is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets, and computers. The fields and charts will adjust to fit your screen size.

What if my current grade is already higher than my desired grade?

The calculator will show that you need a very low score or even 0% on the final to stay above your target. It will tell you that you have already secured your goal grade.
