Introduction
This free IELTS calculator helps you find your band scores in seconds. It has two tools in one. The first tool turns your raw score (the number of correct answers) into a band score for the Listening and Reading sections. It works for both Academic and General Training tests. The second tool takes your band scores from all four sections — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — and gives you your overall IELTS band score. It shows you the math step by step so you can see exactly how your final score is calculated. Just enter your numbers and the calculator does the rest. If you are also preparing for other standardized exams, try our SAT Score Calculator or ACT Score Calculator for those tests.
How to Use Our IELTS Band Score Calculator
Enter your raw scores or section band scores below. The calculator will convert them into IELTS band scores and show your overall result with a step-by-step breakdown.
Raw Score to Band Score Converter
Test Type: Pick either "Academic" or "General Training." This changes how your Reading score is converted. Listening stays the same for both.
Listening Raw Score: Enter the number of correct answers you got on the Listening section. This must be a whole number from 0 to 40.
Reading Raw Score: Enter the number of correct answers you got on the Reading section. This must be a whole number from 0 to 40. The band score you get depends on the test type you picked above.
Click Calculate to see your Listening and Reading band scores. Click Reset to clear your entries and start over.

What Is the IELTS Band Score?
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the most popular English language tests in the world. Millions of people take it each year to study, work, or move to countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, and the United States. The test checks how well you can use English in four areas: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
Each section is scored on a scale from 1.0 to 9.0. A score of 1.0 means you barely know any English. A score of 9.0 means you are an expert user. Most universities and immigration programs ask for a score between 6.0 and 7.5. If you need to meet a specific GPA requirement alongside your IELTS score for university admission, our GPA Calculator can help with that as well.
How Is the Overall Band Score Calculated?
Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your four section scores. You can learn more about how averages work with our Average Calculator. IELTS uses a special rounding rule to reach a final number. After you add all four scores and divide by four, the result is rounded to the nearest whole or half band. If the leftover part (the decimal) is less than 0.25, it rounds down. If it is 0.25 or more but less than 0.75, it rounds to the nearest half. If it is 0.75 or more, it rounds up. For a deeper look at how rounding works in math, see our Rounding Calculator.
For example, if your four scores add up to an average of 6.625, the decimal part is 0.625. That falls between 0.25 and 0.75, so your overall band score rounds to 6.5.
How Are Raw Scores Turned Into Band Scores?
In the Listening and Reading sections, you answer 40 questions. Each correct answer earns one mark, giving you a raw score out of 40. That raw score is then matched to a band score using a conversion table set by IELTS. The Listening table is the same whether you take Academic or General Training. The Reading table is different for each test type because the General Training reading passages are generally easier. If you want to quickly figure out what percentage of questions you answered correctly, our Percentage Calculator can help.
Writing and Speaking do not use raw scores. Trained examiners grade those sections directly on the 1.0 to 9.0 band scale based on set criteria like grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and task response. This examiner-based approach is similar to how other scored assessments work — our Test Grade Calculator can help you understand score-to-grade conversions for classroom tests.
