Introduction
This free unweighted GPA calculator helps you find your grade point average on the standard 4.0 scale. Enter your courses, grades, and credit hours for each semester, and the tool does the math for you. It works with both letter grades and percentage grades.
An unweighted GPA treats all classes the same. An A in any class is worth 4.0 points, whether the class is regular or advanced. Most high schools and colleges use this scale to measure how well a student is doing overall.
With this calculator, you can add multiple semesters, include your existing GPA from past terms, and see a step-by-step breakdown of how your cumulative GPA is calculated. A chart also shows how your GPA changes from one semester to the next, so you can track your progress over time.
How to Use Our Unweighted GPA Calculator
Enter your courses, grades, and credit hours for each semester, and this calculator will show your unweighted GPA, total credits, academic standing, and a step-by-step breakdown of how your GPA is found.
Existing GPA (optional): If you already have a GPA from past semesters, click "Include Existing GPA" and type in your current cumulative GPA on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale. Then pick how many prior credit hours you completed. Leave this blank if you only want to calculate GPA from the semesters you enter below. If you need help finding your cumulative GPA first, try our CGPA calculator.
Semester Name: Give each semester a name so you can tell them apart, like "Fall 2025" or "Semester 1." Click "Add Semester" to add more semesters to your calculation.
Grade Format: Choose whether you want to enter your grades as letter grades (A, B+, C, etc.) or as percentages (0–100). You can set a different format for each semester. If you have percentage scores and want to see how they convert, our percentage to GPA calculator can help.
Course Name: Type the name of each class, such as "English 101" or "Biology." This helps you keep track of which grade goes with which class.
Grade: Pick your letter grade from the dropdown or type your percentage score, depending on the format you chose. Each letter grade converts to a point value on the 4.0 scale. For example, an A is 4.0 and a B+ is 3.3. If you need to figure out your grade for a class first, use our grade calculator.
Credits: Select how many credit hours each course is worth. Most high school classes are 1.0 credit. Check your transcript or ask your school if you are not sure.
After you fill in your courses, click Calculate to see your cumulative unweighted GPA, your total credit hours, and your academic standing. If you enter two or more semesters, a chart will show how your GPA changed over time.
What Is an Unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA is a number that shows how well you do in school on a scale from 0.00 to 4.00. Every class is treated the same, no matter how hard it is. An A in regular math counts the same as an A in honors math. Most schools in the United States use this scale to track student grades.
How Is Unweighted GPA Calculated?
Each letter grade you earn is worth a set number of points. An A is worth 4.0 points, a B is worth 3.0, a C is worth 2.0, a D is worth 1.0, and an F is worth 0.0. Grades with a plus or minus shift the value slightly. For example, a B+ is worth 3.3 and a B− is worth 2.7.
To find your GPA, multiply each grade's point value by the number of credit hours for that class. Add all of those results together. Then divide by your total number of credit hours. The answer is your unweighted GPA. This is essentially a weighted average where each course's grade is weighted by its credit hours.
Unweighted GPA Scale
Here is how letter grades convert to GPA points on the standard unweighted 4.0 scale. You can also use our grade percentage calculator to see how your scores translate across different grading formats:
- A+ / A = 4.0
- A− = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3
- B = 3.0
- B− = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3
- C = 2.0
- C− = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3
- D = 1.0
- D− = 0.7
- F = 0.0
Unweighted GPA vs. Weighted GPA
An unweighted GPA tops out at 4.0. A weighted GPA can go higher, sometimes up to 5.0, because it gives extra points for harder classes like AP or honors courses. If you are taking AP classes, you may also want to check your AP scores to see how you are performing on those exams. Colleges look at both types, but the unweighted GPA gives them a simple, equal comparison across all students.
What Is a Good Unweighted GPA?
A GPA of 3.7 or above is usually considered excellent. A GPA between 3.0 and 3.69 is good. A 2.0 is average and is often the minimum needed to graduate. Anything below 2.0 may put a student on academic warning. If you are preparing for college admissions, knowing your GPA alongside your SAT score or ACT score gives you a fuller picture of where you stand.
