What Is Sheet Metal Weight?

Sheet metal weight is the total mass of a flat piece of metal (or plastic sheet) based on its size and the type of material it is made from. Every material has a density, which tells you how heavy it is for a given volume. A thick sheet of steel weighs much more than a thin sheet of aluminum of the same length and width because steel is denser than aluminum.

How Sheet Metal Weight Is Calculated

To find the weight of a sheet, you multiply its length × width × thickness to get the volume. Then you multiply that volume by the material's density. In metric units, the formula looks like this:

Weight (kg) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000

In imperial units, it is simpler:

Weight (lbs) = Length (in) × Width (in) × Thickness (in) × Density (lb/in³)

If you have more than one piece, multiply the single-piece weight by the number of pieces to get the total weight.

What Is Sheet Metal Gauge?

Instead of stating thickness in millimeters or inches, many shops use a gauge number. A lower gauge number means a thicker sheet. For example, 10-gauge steel is about 3.42 mm (0.1345 in) thick, while 22-gauge steel is only about 0.76 mm (0.0299 in) thick. The gauge system used here follows the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge (MSG) for steel, which is the most common standard in the United States.

Common Materials and Their Densities

Different materials have very different densities. Here are a few examples:

  • Mild Steel (A36): 7.85 g/cm³. It is a strong, low-cost metal used in construction, frames, and brackets. For various steel shapes, you can also use our dedicated steel weight calculator.
  • Stainless Steel (304 & 316): 8.00 g/cm³. It resists rust and is used in kitchens, medical tools, and marine parts.
  • Aluminum 6061: 2.70 g/cm³. It is lightweight and easy to machine, popular in aerospace and automotive parts.
  • Copper: 8.94 g/cm³. It is excellent at conducting electricity and heat, used in wiring and roofing.
  • Brass: 8.53 g/cm³. It is a copper-zinc alloy used for decorative hardware and plumbing fittings.
  • Titanium: 4.51 g/cm³. It is very strong for its weight, used in aircraft and medical implants.
  • Polycarbonate & Acrylic: around 1.20 g/cm³. These are clear plastic sheets used for windows, guards, and signs.

Frequently asked questions

Does the gauge chart apply to aluminum or stainless steel sheets?

No. The gauge values shown here are for carbon steel only. Aluminum and stainless steel have their own gauge charts with different thicknesses for the same gauge number. If you use a non-steel material, switch to Manual mode and enter the actual thickness instead.

What does weight per unit area mean in the results table?

It tells you how much one square meter (in metric) or one square foot (in imperial) of that material weighs at your chosen thickness. This is useful when you know the area of a sheet but not its exact length and width.

Why does my Stainless Steel 304 and 316 show the same weight?

Both alloys have a density of 8.00 g/cm³. Their chemical makeup differs slightly, which changes corrosion resistance and strength, but their weight per volume is essentially the same.

Can I calculate the weight of a round or circular sheet?

No. This calculator is for rectangular flat sheets only. For a circular sheet, you would need to calculate the area as π × radius² and then multiply by thickness and density separately.
