Introduction

This Water Footprint Calculator shows how much water you really use each day. Not just the water from your tap, but also the hidden water used to grow your food, make your clothes, and power your home.

You answer simple questions about showers, toilets, laundry, your lawn, your diet, and more. The calculator adds it all up and gives you two numbers: your whole household total and your per-person total. You can see results in gallons, liters, cubic meters, imperial gallons, or cubic feet.

Your score is split into three parts:

What Is a Water Footprint?

Your water footprint is all the water you use in a day. It counts the water you see, like showers and laundry. It also counts the water you never see, like the water used to grow your food and make your clothes. Most people use far more hidden water than tap water.

The Three Kinds of Water Use

  • Indoor water: showers, baths, toilets, sinks, dishes, and laundry. In a typical U.S. home, toilets and showers use the most.
  • Outdoor water: lawns, gardens, pools, and washing cars. This can be up to 30% of home water use, and a lot of it dries up in the sun before plants can drink it.
  • Virtual water: the hidden water behind food, fuel, power, and goods. One pound of beef takes about 1,800 gallons. One cotton t-shirt takes about 700 gallons. One cup of coffee takes about 37 gallons.

Direct vs. Hidden Water

The average American uses about 80 to 100 gallons of tap water a day. But once you add hidden water from food, energy, and shopping, the total jumps to around 2,000 gallons a day per person. Food alone is often half of that. This is why what you eat and buy matters as much as how long you shower.

Why Water Footprints Matter

Less than 1% of Earth's water is fresh water we can use. Many rivers, lakes, and underground stores are being drained faster than rain can refill them. Cleaning and pumping water also takes lots of energy, so saving water cuts carbon pollution too. Water use and climate change are tied together.

Easy Ways to Use Less Water

  • Take shorter showers and put in a low-flow showerhead (saves about 5 gallons per shower).
  • Switch old toilets for 1.28-gallon models. Old ones can use 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush.
  • Run the dishwasher and washing machine only when full.
  • Fix drips. One leaky faucet can waste over 3,000 gallons a year.
  • Water the lawn early in the morning, or use a smart, weather-based timer.
  • Eat less red meat. Swapping a few meat meals a week saves more water than months of short showers.
  • Buy less new stuff, shop second-hand, and recycle paper, plastic, and glass.

What Counts as a Good Number

The U.S. average is near 2,000 gallons per person per day. The world average is closer to 1,000. Dry regions like the Southwest tend to run higher because of watering and heat. If your number is under your region's average, you are doing well. If it is more than 20% above, your biggest savings are usually in food, goods, lawn watering, and old fixtures.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between blue, green, and grey water footprints?

Water use is split into three colors:

  • Green water: rain that soaks into soil and feeds crops and forests.
  • Blue water: water pulled from rivers, lakes, and wells for farms, homes, and factories.
  • Grey water footprint: the clean water needed to dilute the pollution made by a product.

Blue water is the most limited, so saving it matters most in dry places.

How much water does a 10-minute shower use?

It depends on your showerhead:

  • Standard head (2.5 gal/min): about 25 gallons (95 liters).
  • Low-flow head (1.5 gal/min): about 15 gallons (57 liters).

Cutting the shower to 5 minutes with a low-flow head drops it to about 7.5 gallons (28 liters). That is a 70% cut.

How much water does one load of laundry use?

A standard top-load washer uses about 40 gallons (151 liters) per load. A high-efficiency front-load washer uses about 20 gallons (76 liters).

A family doing 4 loads a week uses roughly 160 gallons with an old machine, or 80 gallons with an efficient one. Always wash full loads.

Does a dishwasher use less water than washing dishes by hand?

Yes, if you run it full. A modern efficient dishwasher uses about 3 to 6 gallons (11 to 23 liters) per cycle. Hand washing under a running tap can use up to 27 gallons (102 liters).

Do not pre-rinse plates. Just scrape off the food and load them.

How much water does it take to make a pair of jeans?

About 1,800 gallons (6,800 liters). Most of it goes to growing the cotton, plus more for dyeing and finishing.

A cotton t-shirt takes about 700 gallons (2,650 liters). Buying second-hand clothes or wearing them longer cuts this hidden water the fastest.

Which foods have the biggest water footprint?

Meat and nuts sit at the top. Rough gallons per pound:

  • Beef: about 1,850 gal

Swapping a few beef meals for beans or vegetables saves thousands of gallons a month.

How much water does a swimming pool lose to evaporation?

An uncovered pool can lose about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water a week in hot, dry, windy weather. For a 400 square foot pool, that is roughly 250 gallons (950 liters) every week.

A pool cover stops most of it and can cut evaporation by up to 90%.

How much water does a lawn need per week?

Most grass needs about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water a week, counting rain. One inch over 1,000 square feet is about 620 gallons (2,350 liters).

Water early in the morning so less dries up in the sun. Deep, less frequent watering grows stronger roots than a short daily sprinkle.

How do I check my toilet for a silent leak?

Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Do not flush. Wait 15 minutes. If color shows up in the bowl, the flapper is leaking.

A silent toilet leak can waste 200 gallons (760 liters) a day. A new flapper costs a few dollars and takes minutes to swap.

Is it legal to reuse greywater at home?

It depends on where you live. Many U.S. states, like California, Arizona, and Texas, allow simple laundry-to-landscape systems with no permit. Others require a permit or ban it.

Common rules: use greywater within 24 hours, keep it underground or under mulch, and never put it on root crops or leafy greens. Check your city or county rules first.

How much water is used to make electricity?

A lot. Coal, gas, and nuclear plants boil water for steam and pull in more water to cool down. In the U.S., power plants take in close to 40% of all fresh water withdrawn.

Solar panels and wind turbines use almost none once they are built. Using less power, or switching to solar or green energy, shrinks your water footprint too.

How much rainwater can a rain barrel collect?

About 0.6 gallons per square foot of roof for each inch of rain. A 1,000 square foot roof gives roughly 600 gallons (2,270 liters) from a single inch of rain.

That means a 55-gallon barrel fills in the first few minutes of a storm. Many people link two or three barrels together.

Does saving water also lower my carbon footprint?

Yes. Water has to be pumped, cleaned, piped to your home, then heated and treated again as waste. All of that burns energy.

Water heating alone is around 18% of home energy use. Shorter showers, cold-wash laundry, and fixed leaks cut both your water bill and your carbon emissions.
