How FENa Is Calculated

Can I use a 24-hour urine collection instead of a spot urine sample?

The FENa formula is designed for spot urine concentrations, not total amounts from a 24-hour collection. If you enter concentration values (mmol/L or mg/dL) from a 24-hour urine report, they may work, but spot urine is the standard method. Check with your lab to be sure.

What should I do if my FENa result is in the indeterminate range (1–2%)?
