Introduction

This Harris-Benedict Calculator shows how many calories your body needs each day. It starts with your BMR (basal metabolic rate), the energy you burn just staying alive, even while resting. Then it adds your activity to give your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure), the number of calories you need in a normal day.

Just enter your gender, age, height, and weight. You can use metric or imperial units (centimeters or feet and inches, kilograms or pounds). Pick your activity level, from sedentary to extreme, and press Calculate.

There are two modes. Standard mode is for everyday use, like planning meals or setting a weight goal. Clinical mode is for health workers. It uses basal energy expenditure (BEE) with activity and stress factors for patients who are sick, hurt, or healing from surgery.

What Is the Harris-Benedict Equation?

The Harris-Benedict equation is a formula that estimates how many calories your body burns each day. It was first made in 1919 and updated in 1984. The updated version is the one most people use today.

The formula uses four things: your sex, age, height, and weight. It gives you a number called your BMR (basal metabolic rate). Then you multiply that number by an activity factor to get your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure).

What Is BMR?

BMR is the energy your body uses just to stay alive. This includes breathing, pumping blood, growing cells, and keeping your body warm. If you stayed in bed all day and did nothing, you would still burn about this many calories.

BMR is usually 60% to 70% of the calories you burn in a day. Bigger, taller, and younger people burn more. Men often burn more than women because they carry more muscle.

What Is TDEE?

TDEE is your BMR plus the energy you use moving around, working out, and digesting food. This is the number most people want when they plan meals. Eat about your TDEE to stay the same weight. Eat less to lose weight. Eat more to gain weight.

The Harris-Benedict Formulas

Clinical Use: BEE, Activity Factors, and Stress Factors

In hospitals, dietitians call the basal number the BEE (basal energy expenditure). Sick or hurt people burn extra calories while healing, so a stress factor is added. Burns, bad infections, surgery, trauma, and cancer all raise calorie needs. The activity factor is smaller here because patients are in bed (×1.20) or walking a little (×1.25). The BEE is then multiplied by the activity factor plus the stress factor.

Calories, Kilojoules, and Megajoules

Many countries measure food energy in kilojoules instead of calories. One calorie (kcal) equals 4.184 kJ. One megajoule (MJ) equals 1,000 kJ.

Things to Keep in Mind

The Harris-Benedict equation is an estimate, not an exact answer. It does not know how much muscle or fat you carry, and muscle burns more energy than fat. Very muscular people may burn more than the formula says. People with obesity may burn less. Results are usually within about 10% for most adults.

Most adults should not eat below 1,200 calories a day for women or 1,500 for men without a doctor's help. Going too low can cost you muscle and key nutrients. Talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian before making big changes to how you eat, and especially if you are pregnant, nursing, under 18, or have a health condition.

Frequently asked questions

Which is more accurate, the Harris-Benedict equation or Mifflin-St Jeor?

Mifflin-St Jeor lands a bit closer for most healthy adults today, often within 10% of measured values. Harris-Benedict tends to run slightly high, sometimes by 5% or so, because it was built from people in the early 1900s who were leaner and more active.

Both are good starting points. The real test is what happens to your weight after 2 to 4 weeks of steady eating.

What changed in the 1984 revision of the Harris-Benedict equation?

Roza and Shetty rechecked the original 1919 numbers and adjusted the coefficients. The new version lowered the estimate for most people, especially women.

The 1984 versions are:

  • Men: 66.5 + (13.75 × kg) + (5.003 × cm) − (6.775 × age)
  • Women: 655.1 + (9.563 × kg) + (1.850 × cm) − (4.676 × age)

The old 1919 numbers used 66.47, 13.75, 5.0, 6.755 for men and 655.1, 9.563, 1.850, 4.676 for women, so the difference is small but real.

What is the difference between BMR and RMR?

BMR is measured under strict rules: after a full night of sleep, before eating, lying still in a warm room. RMR (resting metabolic rate) is measured with less strict rules, so it usually comes out about 5% to 10% higher.

In daily use people swap the words. For meal planning the small gap does not matter much.

Is it safe to eat fewer calories than your BMR?

Not for long, and not without medical help. Your BMR pays for your heart, brain, lungs, and organs. Eating under it for weeks can cost you muscle, iron, calcium, and other nutrients.

General floors are about 1,200 kcal a day for women and 1,500 kcal for men. Very low calorie diets below those numbers should only be done under a doctor's care.

How many calories do I need to cut to lose one pound a week?

About 500 calories a day below your TDEE. One pound of body fat holds roughly 3,500 calories, and 500 × 7 days = 3,500.

To lose about 1 kg (2.2 lb) a week you would need around a 1,000 calorie daily cut, which is too steep for most people. A 250 to 500 calorie cut is easier to keep up and protects muscle better.

Why does BMR go down as you get older?

Two main reasons. You slowly lose muscle after about age 30, and muscle burns more energy at rest than fat does. Organ tissue also becomes a bit less active.

The equation handles this by subtracting calories for each year of age: 6.775 per year for men and 4.676 per year for women. Strength training and enough protein slow the drop.

Does the Harris-Benedict equation work for children?

No. It was built from adult data and it under-estimates the needs of growing kids and teens. Children burn extra energy on growth, and babies burn a lot per kilogram.

Pediatric dietitians use other tools, like the Schofield or WHO equations, or the DRI Estimated Energy Requirement charts. Ask a pediatrician or a registered dietitian for a child's calorie target.

How many extra calories do pregnant or breastfeeding women need?

Standard guidance adds calories on top of normal needs:

  • First trimester: about 0 extra
  • Second trimester: about 340 extra a day
  • Third trimester: about 450 extra a day
  • Breastfeeding: about 330 to 400 extra a day

The Harris-Benedict equation does not include these. Always confirm your target with your doctor or midwife.

Should actual or adjusted body weight be used for people with obesity?

Using actual weight can over-estimate needs, because fat tissue burns less energy than muscle. Many clinicians use an adjusted body weight for people over about 125% of ideal weight.

A common formula is: adjusted weight = ideal weight + 0.25 × (actual weight − ideal weight). Practice varies, so a dietitian should make that call.

How many more calories does muscle burn than fat?

At rest, muscle burns roughly 6 kcal per pound per day (about 13 kcal per kg), while fat burns about 2 kcal per pound per day (about 4.5 kcal per kg).

So adding 5 pounds of muscle only adds about 20 to 30 calories a day at rest. The bigger win is the calories you burn during the workouts and the muscle you keep while dieting.

Which activity multiplier should I use if I have a desk job but work out 4 days a week?

Use ×1.55 (moderate). The multiplier covers your whole week, not just your job.

Quick guide:

  • Active job or 6 to 7 hard workouts: ×1.7

How many kilojoules are in 2,000 calories?

2,000 kcal equals 8,368 kJ, or about 8.4 MJ. Multiply calories by 4.184 to get kilojoules, and divide kilojoules by 4.184 to go back.

Food labels in Australia, New Zealand, and much of Europe list kilojoules, so this conversion is handy when reading packaging.

Are stress factors still used in hospital nutrition today?

Less than they used to be. Older charts added large amounts for burns, trauma, and sepsis. Newer critical care guidelines often suggest 25 to 30 kcal per kg of body weight a day instead, because heavy feeding early on can harm sick patients.

Stress factors still show up in many textbooks and hospital protocols, especially for burns and major trauma, but indirect calorimetry is the gold standard when it is available.

Does eating too few calories slow your metabolism?

Yes, somewhat. This is called adaptive thermogenesis. After long or steep dieting, your body burns less than the equation predicts, often by 10% to 15% beyond what the weight loss alone explains.

You also move less without noticing. To limit it, keep the calorie cut moderate, eat enough protein, and lift weights while you lose.
