The Steps to Calories Calculator shows how many calories you burn from your daily steps. Just enter your height, weight, and step count, pick how fast you walked, and get your answer right away.

Steps alone don't tell the whole story. A tall person covers more ground with each step than a shorter person. A heavier body burns more energy. And a brisk walk burns more than a slow stroll. This tool uses all of those facts, so your number fits you and not just an average person.

You also get more than a calorie count. The calculator shows your distance in miles or kilometers, how long the walk took, your steps per mile, and your calories per mile. It even tracks how close you are to the popular 10,000-step goal.

How to use our Steps to Calories Calculator

Unit System: Pick Imperial (ft/in, lbs) or Metric (cm, kg). Switching units resets the form, so choose this first.

Biological Sex: Choose Male or Female. This sets the factor used to guess your stride length from your height.

Height: Type your height in feet and inches, or in centimeters. Taller people take longer steps, so this changes your distance.

Body Weight: Type your weight in pounds (stone is optional) or in kilograms. A heavier body burns more calories per step.

Steps to Calories: How It Works

Every step you take burns energy. That energy is measured in calories (kcal). Turning steps into calories takes three things: how far each step carries you, how fast you move, and how much you weigh. Fitness trackers use the same idea, so this is a simple way to check your daily walk, treadmill session, or Nordic walk.

Stride Length: The First Piece

Your stride length is the distance one step covers. Taller people cover more ground, so they need fewer steps to walk a mile. A common estimate, and the default here, uses your height:

  • Men: stride = height × 0.415
  • Women: stride = height × 0.413

Most adults take about 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile (about 1,250 to 1,550 steps per kilometer). If you know your real stride, use it instead of the estimate for a better answer.

MET Values: The Second Piece

A MET tells you how hard an activity is compared to sitting still; one MET is defined as 1 kcal per kilogram per hour, or an oxygen uptake of 3.5 ml/kg/min.3 In the Compendium of Physical Activities, walking at 2.0 to 2.4 mph on a level surface is 2.8 METs and a brisk 3.5 to 3.9 mph is 4.8 METs.2 Running can pass 10 METs. The standard calorie formula is:

Calories = minutes × MET × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200

So walking faster burns more calories per minute, and a heavier body burns more calories over the same distance. The Walking Calorie Calculator uses the same MET method if you already know your time instead of your step count.

How Many Calories Are 10,000 Steps?

For most people, 10,000 steps burns roughly 300 to 500 calories. That is about 4 to 5 miles (6 to 8 km) of walking. A lighter person walking slowly may land near 250 calories. A heavier person walking briskly may pass 600. Your exact number depends on your weight, height, and pace.

What Changes Your Burn

  • Body weight: more weight means more work, so more calories.
  • Pace: a brisk walk burns more per mile than a slow stroll.
  • Height and stride: longer strides cover more distance per step.
  • Activity type: Nordic walking uses poles and your arms, so it burns more than plain walking. Treadmill walking is close to outdoor walking, but no wind or hills change the effort.
  • Hills and terrain: uphill and rough ground raise the burn.

Why Step Goals Help

The 10,000-step goal is popular because it is easy to remember. A pooled analysis of 15 studies found the risk of early death kept falling as daily steps rose, levelling off around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults 60 and older, and 8,000 to 10,000 for younger adults.1 Walking also helps mood, blood sugar, and sleep. If you sit most of the day, adding 2,000 steps is a solid first win.

Keep in Mind

These numbers are estimates, not lab results. They cover the total calories burned during your walk, including the energy your body uses just to stay alive. To find the extra calories from walking alone, subtract your resting burn: one MET, the resting rate, is defined as 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour.3 The BMR Calculator gives a closer figure for that baseline.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my fitness tracker show a different calorie number?

Trackers use heart rate, motion sensors, and their own private formulas. This calculator uses the standard MET equation with your weight, height, and pace. Both are estimates. A gap of 10-20% is normal. Use one method and stick with it so you can compare day to day.

Why does walking faster burn more calories over the same steps?

A faster pace uses a higher MET value, so you burn more energy each minute. Even though a quick walk takes less time, the higher intensity more than makes up for it. Going from a slow walk at 2.0 to 2.4 mph (2.8 METs) to a brisk walk at 3.5 to 3.9 mph (4.8 METs) raises your burn per mile by a large amount.2

How do I measure my real stride length?

Walk 20 normal steps in a straight line. Measure the total distance from your start point to your end point. Divide that distance by 20. That is your stride length. Type it into Advanced Options for a more exact result than the height estimate.

Why does Nordic walking burn more calories?

Poles pull your arms, shoulders, back, and core into the work. More muscles working means more energy used. In the Compendium of Physical Activities, Nordic walking at a moderate 2.5 to 3.5 mph is 4.3 METs, against 3.8 for ordinary walking at 2.8 to 3.4 mph.2

Is treadmill walking the same as outdoor walking?

Close, but not the same. The calculator gives treadmill walking slightly higher METs at slow speeds and slightly lower METs at fast speeds. Outdoors you deal with wind, turns, and uneven ground. On a treadmill the belt moves under you at one steady speed.

Are these the calories I burned on top of just sitting around?

No. The number is your total burn during the walk, including the calories your body uses at rest. To find the extra calories from walking only, subtract about 1 calorie per kilogram of body weight per hour of walking time.

How many steps do I need to burn 100 calories?

Most adults burn 100 calories in about 2,000 to 2,500 steps at a moderate pace. Lighter and shorter people need more steps. Heavier and taller people need fewer. Enter your own numbers to see your exact figure.

How many steps burn one pound of fat?

One pound of fat is about 3,500 calories. If you burn 400 calories per 10,000 steps, that is roughly 87,500 steps, or about nine days of hitting 10,000 steps. Walking alone will not do it unless your eating stays steady too.

Why does biological sex change my result?

Only through stride length. Men use height x 0.415 and women use height x 0.413. It is a small difference. The calorie math itself uses your weight, time, and MET value, not your sex.

Should I trust the 10,000-step goal?

It is a good, simple target, but not magic. Why is my calories-per-mile number the same at every step count?

Because calories per mile depends on your weight and pace, not how far you go. Walking two miles burns twice the calories of one mile, so the rate per mile stays flat. That number is handy for planning distance goals.

What does the MET number in the results mean?

MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent of Task. It compares an activity to sitting still, which is 1 MET. A 4 MET walk burns four times the energy of sitting. Higher MET means harder work and more calories per minute.

Why does the duration look longer or shorter than my actual walk?

The calculator works out time from your distance and chosen pace. If the number does not match your real walk, your true pace was different. Try a faster or slower pace option until the duration matches your watch, then read the calories.
