This helps if you want to finish a 90-minute lecture in about an hour, or slow a hard reading down to 0.75x so every word is clear. Faster speeds save time. Slower speeds give your brain more room to follow along and understand new words.
How to use our Playback Speed Calculator
Type in how long your video, podcast, audiobook, or lecture is, then pick a playback speed. The calculator shows your new watch time, how much time you save or add, the percent change, the math steps, and a chart of every speed.
Hours: Enter the number of full hours in the original recording. Use 0 if it is shorter than one hour.
Minutes: Enter the leftover minutes, from 0 to 59. A 90-minute video is 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Seconds: Enter the leftover seconds, from 0 to 59. Leave it at 0 if you do not need it.
Preset speeds: Tap a common speed button like 1.5x or 2x. Tap the same button again to clear it.
Custom speed: Type any speed from 0.1 to 16, such as 1.35. Speeds above 1 make the audio faster and shorter. Speeds below 1 make it slower and longer.
Speed slider: Drag the slider to try speeds between 0.1x and 4x and watch the results change right away.

What Is Playback Speed?
Playback speed is how fast a video or audio file plays. It is written as a multiplier, like 1.5x or 2x. At 1x, the file plays at normal speed. At 2x, it plays twice as fast, so it takes half the time. At 0.5x, it plays at half speed and takes twice as long.
How the Math Works
The rule is simple: divide the original length by the speed.
New time = Original time ÷ Speed
Example: a 60 minute podcast at 1.5x speed takes 60 ÷ 1.5 = 40 minutes. You save 20 minutes, which is about 33% of the time.
Notice that the time you save does not grow evenly. Going from 1x to 1.5x saves a lot. Going from 2x to 2.5x saves much less. Each speed jump helps a little bit less than the one before it.
Common Speeds and What They Save
- 0.5x – takes 100% longer. Good for hard accents, new languages, or note taking.
- 0.75x – takes about 33% longer. Good for tricky math or science lectures.
- 1x – normal speed. No change.
- 1.25x – saves 20%. A gentle speed up that most people barely notice.
- 1.5x – saves 33%. A popular pick for podcasts and talks.
- 2x – saves 50%. Best for slow speakers or review of stuff you already know.
- 3x – saves about 67%. Very fast. Most people need practice first.
Speed and Understanding
Most speakers talk at about 150 words per minute. At 1.5x that becomes about 225 words per minute, and at 2x it is about 300. You can test your own pace with the WPM Calculator. Reading and listening are not the same, but both have a limit. Studies on fast listening show that people keep most of what they hear up to about 1.5x. Past that, memory and understanding start to drop, especially with new or hard topics.
A good plan is to speed up slowly. Start at 1.25x for a week, then try 1.5x. Your brain adapts to a faster voice in a few days. If you find yourself rewinding a lot, you went too fast.
When to Slow Down Instead
Speeding up is not always smart. Slow down when you are learning a new language, following step by step directions, taking notes for a test, or listening to poetry, music, or a story where the sound matters. In these cases, 0.75x or 0.5x helps you catch every word.
Where You Can Change Speed
Most apps let you change speed: YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Audible, Netflix, Zoom recordings, and school tools like Canvas or Coursera. Many apps also use pitch correction, so voices do not sound high and squeaky when you speed them up. Some also cut out silence, which saves even more time on top of the speed change.
