Introduction

This percent to goal calculator helps you find out how close you are to reaching a target. Enter your current progress and your goal, and it will show you the exact percentage you have completed. You can also enter any two of the three values — progress, goal, or percent — and the calculator will solve for the missing one. It works for sales targets, savings goals, fitness milestones, fundraising, school projects, or any situation where you need to measure how far along you are. Results update instantly and include a visual progress bar, a gauge chart, and a milestone table so you can see exactly where you stand.

How to Use Our Percent to Goal Calculator

Enter any two of the three fields below, and the calculator will instantly find the missing value and show you how close you are to your goal.

Progress (Actual Value): Type in the amount you have reached so far. This is the number that shows what you have done up to this point.

Goal (Target Value): Type in the total amount you want to reach. This is the finish line you are working toward.

Percent to Goal (%): Type in the percentage of your goal that is complete. Leave this blank if you want the calculator to figure it out for you.

What Is Percent to Goal?

Percent to goal tells you how much of a target you have completed. It is a simple way to measure progress. You take what you have done so far, divide it by your goal, and multiply by 100. The result is a percentage that shows how close you are to finishing. If you need to work with other types of percentage calculations, our Percentage Calculator can handle a wide range of scenarios.

The Formula

The percent to goal formula is:

Percent to Goal = (Progress ÷ Goal) × 100

For example, if your goal is 500 and you have reached 350, then your percent to goal is (350 ÷ 500) × 100 = 70%. This means you have finished 70% of your goal and still have 30% left to go. To understand how values shift over time, you might also find our Percent Change Calculator helpful for comparing progress between different periods.

When Is This Useful?

People use percent to goal in many areas of life:

  • Sales targets — Track how close a team is to hitting a revenue goal. Pair this with our ROI Calculator to measure the return on your sales efforts.
  • Fundraising — See how much money has been raised compared to the total needed.
  • Fitness — Measure steps walked, calories burned, or miles run against a daily or weekly goal.
  • Savings — Check how much you have saved toward a big purchase or emergency fund. Our Savings Calculator can help you project when you will reach your target.
  • School projects — Track tasks completed out of the total required. You can also use our Grade Calculator to see how individual assignments contribute to your final grade.

Can the Percent Go Over 100%?

Yes. If your progress is greater than your goal, the percentage will be above 100%. This simply means you exceeded your target. For instance, if your goal was 200 and you reached 250, your percent to goal is 125%. If you want to compare two values and find the relative difference between them, our Percent Difference Calculator is a useful companion tool.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator solves for any one of the three values — progress, goal, or percent — as long as you provide the other two. Enter the two values you know, and the missing one is calculated instantly. It also shows a progress bar, a gauge chart, milestone scenarios, and a reference table so you can quickly see where you stand. For financial goals that involve growth over time, consider using our Compound Interest Calculator or Future Value Calculator to project how your money will grow toward your target. If you are tracking a decrease rather than progress toward a goal, our Percentage Decrease Calculator can help quantify the change. You can also use the Rate of Change Calculator to measure how quickly you are moving toward your goal over time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate percent to goal?

Divide your progress by your goal, then multiply by 100. For example, if you earned $600 out of a $1,000 goal, the math is (600 ÷ 1000) × 100 = 60%. You can also just type your two numbers into the calculator and it does the math for you.

What if I only know the percent and the goal?

Enter the percent and the goal into the calculator and leave the progress field blank. The calculator will find the progress value for you. For example, if your goal is 500 and you are at 40%, your progress is 200.

What if I only know the percent and my progress?

Enter the percent and the progress into the calculator and leave the goal field blank. It will calculate the goal. For example, if your progress is 300 and that equals 75%, your goal is 400.

What do the color tiers mean?

The calculator uses four color levels to show where you stand:

  • Red (below 50%) — Needs Attention
  • Orange (50% to 79%) — In Progress
  • Yellow (80% to 99%) — Almost There
  • Green (100% and above) — Goal Reached

Can I use decimal numbers or negative numbers?

Yes, the calculator accepts decimals like 75.5 or 1234.99. It also accepts negative numbers. A negative progress value would give a negative percentage, which could show you are behind a starting point.

What does the Milestone Scenarios section show?

It shows how much more progress you need to reach common milestones like 25%, 50%, 75%, 90%, 100%, and beyond. If you already passed a milestone, it shows a green checkmark that says "Reached."

What is the reference table at the bottom?

The reference table lists common percentages from 0% to 200% and shows how much progress each one requires for your specific goal. Your current percentage is highlighted so you can quickly find your row.

Why does the goal field say it cannot be zero?

When solving for percent, the formula divides progress by the goal. Dividing by zero is not possible in math, so the goal must be a number other than zero.

Does the calculator round my results?

Results are shown to two decimal places for easy reading. The actual calculation uses up to six decimal places for accuracy when filling in a missing field.

Can I use this for team or group goals?

Yes. Enter the combined progress of your team as the progress value and the team target as the goal. The calculator will show the team's overall percent to goal.

What does the calculated badge on a field mean?

The small "calculated" badge appears on the field that the calculator solved for you. It tells you which value was computed automatically based on the other two fields you entered.

How do I reset the calculator to its default values?

Click the Reset button. It sets progress back to 80,000, the goal back to 100,000, and clears the percent field so it gets recalculated.

Can I track progress over time with this tool?

This calculator gives you a snapshot of your current percent to goal. To track changes over time, run the calculator each time your progress updates and note the results. You can compare snapshots to see how fast you are moving toward your target.
