The Delusion Calculator shows how many people really match your dating standards. You pick what you want in a partner — age, height, income, education, ethnicity, and more. Then the math shows what percent of adults fit all of it.

Every filter you add cuts the pool smaller. Want someone tall, rich, single, and college-educated in a tight age range? Each rule seems small on its own. Stacked together, they can shrink millions of people down to a few thousand — or almost none.

Your results include a delusion tier (from Grounded to Unicorn Hunter), your odds of a random match, a chart of who is left after each filter, and tips on which one rule to loosen for the biggest gain. You can also pick your tone: normal, funny, or savage.

The numbers come from U.S. Census Bureau and CDC data. This tool is not here to judge your list. It just shows you the real size of your dating pool, so you can decide what truly matters to you. How to use our Delusion Calculator

Tell the Delusion Calculator who you are and what you want in a partner. It then shows what percent of the adult dating pool fits every one of your standards, how many real people that is, your odds of a random match, and your delusion tier.

What Is a Delusion Score in Dating?

Your delusion score shows how many people actually match your dating standards. Every rule you add — age, height, income, education, single status, body type — cuts the pool of possible partners smaller. The score is the share of adults left after all your rules are applied. A low score does not mean you are wrong to want what you want. It just means fewer people fit, so finding them takes longer.

Why Small Standards Add Up Fast

This is the part most people miss. Filters multiply, they do not add. Say half the people match your age range, half match your height rule, and half earn enough. That is not "half" left over. It is 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5, which is only 12.5%. Add three more rules and you can drop under 1% without asking for anything wild on its own. This is the same independent-events rule you see in any probability calculator.

Here is a simple example:

  • Women aged 26–38: about 21% of adult women
  • Bachelor's degree or higher: about 39%
  • Not married: about 53%
  • BMI under 30: about 58%

The Delusion Tiers

  • Grounded (over 20%) — Your standards leave a large, easy pool.
  • Selective (5%–20%) — Clear preferences, still very findable.
  • Picky (1%–5%) — Real work needed. You must meet a lot of people.
  • Delusional (0.1%–1%) — Fewer than 1 in 100 fit. Luck starts to matter more than effort.
  • Unicorn Hunter (under 0.1%) — The person you describe barely exists in your city.

Which Filters Hurt the Most

Height and income are the two biggest pool killers. A 6-foot minimum removes about 85% of American women and roughly 60% of American men. A $250,000 income minimum removes over 95% of workers — compare that against a typical paycheck using the Salary Calculator. Age ranges also bite harder than people expect, since each year of age is only about 1–2% of all adults. Education and marital status cut less, but they still stack on top of everything else.

Where the Numbers Come From

The math uses U.S. Census Bureau data for age, race, education, income, and marital status, plus CDC NHANES data for height and BMI. Height is modeled as a bell curve: U.S. men average about 5'9" and U.S. women about 5'4". The filters are treated as independent, meaning one trait does not predict another. In real life traits do link up a little — taller people earn slightly more, more school often means more money — so treat the result as a solid estimate, not a headcount.

How to Use Your Result

Do not read a low score as an insult. Read it as a time cost. If only 1 in 500 people match, then dating apps, small friend groups, and one bar on a Friday night will not be enough. You either widen the search area, meet far more people, or loosen the one rule that costs you the most. The Odds Calculator is a handy way to see what "1 in 500" looks like across many tries. Most people find that dropping a single hard number — two inches of height, five years of age, or a salary floor — doubles or triples their pool while changing almost nothing about who they would actually be happy with.

Standards, Compatibility, and What Numbers Miss

Traits on a checklist are easy to count. The things that make love last are not. Kindness, humor, shared values, timing, and how safe someone makes you feel never show up in Census tables. Many long, happy matches would have failed the filter list of the person in them. Use the numbers to check if your list is realistic, then leave room for the person who surprises you.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Delusion Calculator meant to insult me?

No. It only counts people. The tool shows how many adults fit your list, nothing more. A low score is a time cost, not a character flaw. It tells you that you need to meet more people or loosen one rule.

Why does my percent stay the same when I change the search radius?

The radius only changes the headcount, not the rarity. Your percent is a share of the pool, and that share is the same in a city or a country. So 2% of a metro area is a smaller number of people than 2% of the U.S., but the percent does not move.

What does the 'Biggest cut' badge mean in the breakdown?

It marks the single filter that removed the largest share of the people who reached it. That is your most expensive rule. If you want your pool to grow fast, that is the first rule to soften.

Why is my result shown on a log scale chart?

Because the drops are huge. Your pool can fall from millions to a few hundred. On a normal chart the last bars would look flat at zero. A log scale lets you see every step, even the tiny ones.

Does picking 'Either' for who I want double my odds?

Not exactly. It doubles your starting pool by adding both men and women. But men and women have different height, income, and education stats, so the final percent lands somewhere between the two single-gender results.

Why do I get 'fewer than 1 person' as a result?

Your filters cut the pool below one whole person for that area. It means nobody in that region is likely to match every rule. Widen your radius or drop a filter to get a real number back.

Does choosing more than one ethnicity make my pool bigger or smaller?

Bigger. The tool adds the share of each group you pick. Someone matches if they fit any one of your choices. Leaving 'Doesn't Matter' on keeps the pool at 100% for that filter.

How does the minimum education filter work?

It keeps everyone at that level or above. Pick Associate's and you also keep people with a Bachelor's or a graduate degree. So a higher bar always means a smaller pool.

Why does income cut so much of the pool?

Most people earn far less than they seem to online. U.S. median personal income sits near $50,000 for men and $38,000 for women. Set a floor at $150,000 or more and you remove the large majority of workers in one move.

Should I set a maximum income?

Usually no. Leave it at 'No Maximum' unless you truly want to skip high earners. A ceiling adds another cut for no real gain and shrinks your pool further.

Can I use this if I live outside the United States?

The data is U.S. only right now. The 'Open to other countries' radius stretches U.S. patterns over a world headcount, so treat that number as rough. Your percent still shows how strict your list is.

Why is the age filter stronger than I expected?

Each single year of age holds only about 1% to 2% of all adults. A 12-year window keeps roughly a fifth of the pool. Narrow it to four years and you keep less than a tenth.

Does the tone setting change the math?

No. Normal, Funny, and Savage change only the wording of your reality check. The percent, headcount, tier, and chart stay identical.

What does 'not currently married' include?

It covers single, divorced, widowed, and separated adults. About 48% of U.S. adults are married, so this filter keeps roughly half the pool. It does not know who is dating someone, so real availability is a bit lower.

Why do the suggestions sometimes show nothing?

That happens when no single change grows your pool by more than 1%. Either your filters are already wide open, or several rules cut about the same amount. Loosen two at once to see movement.

Do I have to fill in every field?

No. Height, ethnicity, income, and education are optional. Skip them by leaving height at full range, ethnicity on 'Doesn't Matter', income at $0 with no max, and education on 'Doesn't Matter'.

Is 'Unicorn Hunter' really impossible?

Not impossible, just very rare. Under 0.1% means fewer than 1 in 1,000 people fit. Those people exist, but you would need to meet thousands to find one, and they must also like you back.

Why does the tool assume my filters are independent?

Because it multiplies each share together. In real life traits link a little, since more school often means more income. That link makes the true answer slightly higher than shown, so read your score as a close estimate.

Does my own height, income, or age affect the result?

No. The tool only measures the size of the group you are asking for. It does not check whether you would match their standards, so the real odds of a mutual match are lower than the number shown.

How do I make my pool bigger without giving up what matters?

Look at the 'Biggest Wins' box. Most people double or triple their pool by moving one hard number, like two inches of height or five years of age. Keep the traits you care about and trim the ones that were just habit.
