What Is Name Numerology?
Name numerology is the practice of turning the letters in your name into numbers. Each letter is given a number value. You add the numbers up, then add the digits of that total again until you get a single number from 1 to 9. That final number is called a root number, and numerologists read it as a clue about your traits, gifts, and inner drive. The Three Name Numbers
Your name gives three main numbers, and each one uses a different set of letters:
- Expression Number – uses all the letters. It points to your natural talents and the direction your life takes. It is also called the Destiny Number.
- Soul Urge Number – uses only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U). It shows what you want deep down, the part of you others rarely see. It is also called the Heart's Desire.

Chaldean vs Pythagorean Numerology
There are two well-known letter systems, and they often give different answers for the same name.
- Chaldean numerology is the older system, with roots in ancient Babylon. It uses values 1 through 8 only, because 9 was seen as sacred and was not given to any letter. Letters are grouped by their sound and vibration, not by alphabet order. Chaldean readers usually use the name you go by every day, since that is the name people speak out loud.
- Pythagorean numerology is the modern Western system, named after the Greek thinker Pythagoras — the same figure behind the Pythagorean theorem. Letters get values 1 to 9 in simple alphabet order: A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on, starting over after I. Pythagorean readers usually use your full birth name from your birth certificate.

Only letters A–Z and spaces count. Hyphens, apostrophes, numbers, and other marks are dropped before the math starts. So "O'Brien-Smith" is read as "OBRIENSMITH." The letter Y is treated as a consonant here, which keeps the results steady no matter which name you type. Some numerologists count Y as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound, so you may see slightly different results elsewhere.
