This Download Calculator tells you how long a file will take to download. Type in the file size, pick your internet speed, and get an answer in days, hours, minutes, and seconds.
You can pick from ready-made choices, like a 4 GB movie or a 50 GB game, and speeds like 4G, 5G, cable, or gigabit fiber. You can also type your own numbers.
Real internet is slower than the speed you pay for. Things like network traffic and extra data slow it down. That is why the tool has an efficiency setting, set to 85% by default. You can change it or switch to the theoretical maximum of 100%.

How to use our Download Time Calculator
Enter your file size and your internet speed, and the calculator shows how long the download will take in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. It also shows upload time, speed equivalents, the math steps, and how the same file would do on other connections.
Common file presets: Pick a file type, like an MP3 song, an HD movie, or a big game. The size and unit fill in for you. Choose "Custom" to type your own.
File size: Type how big the file is, then pick the unit next to it, such as MB or GB. The number must be more than 0.

Common connection presets: Pick your kind of internet, like DSL, cable, 4G, 5G, or gigabit fiber. Your download speed fills in on its own.
Download speed: Type the speed your plan gives you, then pick the unit. Mbps is the most common. You can find this number on your bill or from a speed test.
Also calculate upload time: Turn this on to see how long it takes to send the file out. Then type your upload speed and pick its unit. Upload speed is often slower than download speed.

Download Time: How It Works
Download time is how long it takes to move a file from the internet to your device. It depends on two things: how big the file is, and how fast your connection moves data. The math is simple — you divide the file size by the speed. The tricky part is that file size and speed are usually measured in different units.
Bits vs. Bytes
Internet speed is measured in bits per second (Mbps, Gbps). File size is measured in bytes (MB, GB). One byte equals 8 bits. That means a 100 Mbps connection moves about 12.5 megabytes each second, not 100. This is why a "fast" plan can feel slower than the number suggests. To compare them, both numbers must be changed into the same unit first.
Common Speed Units
- Kbps — thousand bits per second (old dial-up speeds)
- Mbps — million bits per second (most home plans)
- Gbps — billion bits per second (fiber plans)
- MB/s — megabytes per second (what download bars often show)
Why Real Speed Is Slower
You almost never get the full speed your provider advertises. Data is wrapped in extra info called protocol overhead. Wi-Fi signals weaken, servers get busy, and many people share the same line at night. Most real downloads land near 70–90% of the listed speed. That is why an efficiency setting matters — it gives a more honest answer than pure math alone.
Decimal vs. Binary Units
There are two ways to count a kilobyte. Hard drive makers and internet providers use decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes). Computers often use binary (1 KB = 1,024 bytes). Over large files the gap grows. A "1 TB" drive shows up as about 931 GB in Windows for this reason. Bit-rate speeds always use 1,000. Upload vs. Download
Most home plans are lopsided. Download speed is high, upload speed is much lower. Cable and DSL plans may give you 100 Mbps down but only 10 or 20 Mbps up. Fiber is often the same both ways. So sending a big video to the cloud can take much longer than pulling one down.
