Introduction

This Months to Years Calculator turns any number of months into years in one step. The answer updates as you type. You can also hit Swap to go the other way and change years into months.

The math is simple: there are 12 months in 1 year. To get years, you divide the months by 12. To get months, you multiply the years by 12. For example, 18 months ÷ 12 = 1.5 years, or 1 year and 6 months.

The tool gives you more than just one number. You get:

  • A decimal answer, with up to 10 decimal places
  • A clear breakdown, like "1 year and 6 months"
  • The same time shown in weeks, days, hours, and decades
  • Step-by-step math so you can see how it works
  • A chart and a quick reference table for nearby values

Use it for baby ages, work history, loan terms, school plans, or any time you need to switch between months and years.

Months to Years: How It Works

One year has 12 months. That is the only number you need. To change months into years, divide the months by 12. To go the other way, multiply the years by 12.

The Formulas

  • Years = Months ÷ 12, for example 30 ÷ 12 = 2.5 years
  • Months = Years × 12, for example 3.5 × 12 = 42 months

Decimal Years vs. Years and Months

There are two ways to write the answer. A decimal year looks like 1.75 years. A years and months answer looks like 1 year and 9 months. Both mean the same amount of time. People use decimals for math, loans, and charts. People use years and months when talking about a child's age or a job history.

To split a decimal year, take the whole number for the years. Then multiply what is left by 12 to get the months. Example: 2.25 years gives 2 whole years, and 0.25 × 12 = 3 months. So 2.25 years is 2 years and 3 months.

Common Conversions

  • 6 months = 0.5 year
  • 12 months = 1 year
  • 18 months = 1.5 years
  • 24 months = 2 years
  • 36 months = 3 years
  • 60 months = 5 years
  • 120 months = 10 years

Why Days Are Not So Simple

Months are not all the same length. Some have 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. So there is no exact number of days in "one month." For weeks, days, and hours, this tool uses an average month of 30.436875 days. That comes from a year of 365.2425 days (the leap year rule) split into 12 equal parts. Your real calendar dates may be off by a day or two, but the average works well for planning.

When You Need This

Month-to-year math shows up in car loans and leases (a 72-month loan is 6 years), baby and toddler ages, work experience on a resume, school programs, rental agreements, warranties, and visa or contract lengths.

Frequently asked questions

How many years is 72 months?

72 months is exactly 6 years. Divide 72 by 12 to get 6.

This comes up a lot with car loans. A 72-month loan means you pay for 6 years. Other common loan terms:

  • 48 months = 4 years
  • 60 months = 5 years
  • 84 months = 7 years

Is 18 months the same as a year and a half?

Yes. 18 months = 1 year and 6 months = 1.5 years.

12 of those months make one full year. The 6 months left over are half a year, since 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5.

Why is 1 year and 6 months written as 1.5 years and not 1.6 years?

Because months are twelfths of a year, not tenths.

To turn leftover months into a decimal, divide them by 12, not by 10. So 6 months is 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 years.

A few examples:

  • 3 months = 0.25 years
  • 4 months = 0.33 years
  • 6 months = 0.5 years
  • 9 months = 0.75 years

How many months are in 2 years?

There are 24 months in 2 years. Multiply 2 by 12.

Use the same math for any number of years: 3 years = 36 months, 4 years = 48 months, 10 years = 120 months.

What is 1.5 years in months?

1.5 years = 18 months.

Multiply 1.5 × 12 = 18. The whole year gives 12 months, and the 0.5 gives 6 more.

How do you turn a decimal year into years and months?

Keep the whole number as the years. Then multiply the part after the decimal by 12 to get the months.

Example: 3.4 years. The 3 stays as 3 years. Then 0.4 × 12 = 4.8, which rounds to about 5 months. So 3.4 years is about 3 years and 5 months.

How do you work out a child's age in years and months?

Count the full years since the birthday, then count the extra months.

Example: a child born in March 2023, checked in September 2026, is 3 years and 6 months old. That is 42 months, or 3.5 years.

Doctors often use months only for babies and toddlers, since small changes matter a lot at that age.

How many months are in a decade?

A decade is 10 years, so it has 120 months.

A few more:

  • Half a decade (5 years) = 60 months
  • 25 years = 300 months
  • A century (100 years) = 1,200 months

Is 52 weeks the same as 12 months?

Not quite. 52 weeks is 364 days, but a year is about 365.24 days.

So 12 months is a little more than 52 weeks, about 52.18 weeks. That extra day or two is why a date lands on a different weekday each year.

How many months is 90 days?

90 days is close to 3 months, but not exact.

Using an average month of 30.44 days, 90 days is about 2.96 months. Real calendar months matter too: January through March is 90 days in a normal year, but April through June is 91 days.

How many years is 100 months?

100 months is about 8.33 years, or 8 years and 4 months.

Here is the math: 100 ÷ 12 = 8.3333. The 8 is whole years, and 0.3333 × 12 = 4 months left over.

How should you write months of work experience on a resume?

Write it as years and months, like "2 years 8 months," instead of a decimal.

Hiring managers read that faster than 2.67 years. If a job lasted under a year, just use months, like "9 months." Round to the nearest whole month, not the nearest year.

Why do people say a month is 4 weeks?

It is a quick shortcut, but it is short by a couple of days.

4 weeks is only 28 days. Most months have 30 or 31 days. The average month is about 30.44 days, or 4.35 weeks. That is why 12 months is 52 weeks plus a bit, not 48 weeks.
