    What Is Driving Distance?

    Driving distance is the total length of the road you travel when going from one place to another by car. It is different from straight-line distance, which is the shortest path between two points measured through the air. Roads have curves, turns, and detours, so driving distance is almost always longer than straight-line distance.     Driving distance is measured along actual roads using miles or kilometers. In the United States, miles are the standard unit. Most other countries use kilometers. One mile equals about 1.61 kilometers. This calculator shows both units so you can use whichever one you prefer.     Straight-line distance, also called air distance, is how far apart two places are if you could fly directly between them. It uses a math formula called the Haversine formula, which accounts for the curve of the Earth. Road distance follows highways and streets, so it is always longer.     Frequently asked questions

    How accurate is the driving distance shown?

    The driving distance comes from real road data provided by OSRM (Open Source Routing Machine). It follows actual highways and streets, so it is close to what your car's odometer would show. Small differences can happen because of detours, construction, or road changes not yet updated in the map data.

    Does this calculator use real-time traffic?

    No. The estimated driving time is based only on the average speed you enter. It does not factor in traffic, accidents, construction zones, or weather. For a more exact arrival time, check a live traffic app before you leave.

    What is the difference between the road distance and the air distance?

    Road distance is how far you actually drive along highways and streets. Air distance, also called straight-line distance, is the shortest path between two points as if you could fly directly. Road distance is always longer because roads curve, turn, and go around obstacles.

    Can I use this calculator for locations outside the United States?

    Yes. The calculator works for cities, towns, addresses, and airport codes around the world. Just type in any location and pick a match from the dropdown list.

    What does the average speed setting do?

    The average speed setting controls how the tool estimates your driving time. For example, if you set 60 mph and the route is 300 miles, the estimated time will be about 5 hours. You can change this number to match highway speeds, city speeds, or anything in between.

    Why does the map say estimated route instead of showing real roads?

    If the live routing service is temporarily unavailable, the calculator creates an estimated route. This estimated route uses the straight-line distance multiplied by 1.3 to approximate road distance. The result is less accurate than a live route, but it still gives you a useful estimate.

    Can I add stops in the middle of my trip?

    Yes. Click the Add a Stop button to insert up to 5 stops between your origin and destination. The stops are visited in the order you list them, and the total distance includes every stop.

    How do I swap my origin and destination?

    Click the swap button (the arrows icon) between the From and To fields. This instantly switches your start and end points so you can see the return trip distance without retyping.

    What units can I see results in?

    You can view results in miles (Imperial) or kilometers (Metric). Use the unit toggle under Options to switch. The results area always shows all three units — miles, kilometers, and nautical miles — in the secondary line beneath the main number.

    How is the straight-line distance calculated?

    The straight-line distance uses the Haversine formula. This formula measures the shortest path between two points on the surface of a sphere, accounting for the curve of the Earth. The Step-by-Step Solution section below the results shows the full math.

    What should I type in the From and To fields?

    You can type a city name (like Chicago, IL), a full street address, a town name, or an airport code (like LAX or JFK). As you type, a dropdown list of matching places will appear. Click the correct match to lock in your location.

    Why are there multiple route options?

    The calculator can show alternate routes when more than one road path exists between your locations. The first route is usually the fastest. Other routes may be shorter in distance but slower, or they may avoid highways. Click any route option to see its details on the map.

    Can I use this for walking or biking distances?

    No. This calculator uses car driving routes only. The roads it picks and the distances it shows are meant for motor vehicles. Walking and biking paths may be very different from driving routes.

    What happens if my location is not found?

    If the tool cannot find your location, an error message will appear under the input field. Try using a more specific name, add the state or country, or use a nearby city. You can also try an airport code or a well-known landmark name.

    Does the turn-by-turn directions list include every small turn?

    The directions include major turns, highway merges, exits, and road name changes. Very small turns within a neighborhood may be grouped together. For full navigation with voice guidance, use a dedicated GPS or navigation app during your drive.

    Is the reference table at the bottom based on driving distance or air distance?
