Introduction

This MS Sheet Weight Calculator tells you how much a mild steel sheet or plate weighs. Just type in the thickness, width, and length of the sheet, plus how many pieces you have. The tool does the math and shows the weight right away.

Steel is sold by weight, not by size. So knowing the weight helps you order the right amount, plan a truck load, and check a supplier's bill. The calculator uses this simple formula:

Weight = Thickness × Width × Length × Density × Number of Pieces

Mild steel has a density of 7.85 g/cm³, and that value is already set for you. You can also pick other metals from the list, like stainless steel, aluminium, brass, or copper. What Is MS Sheet Weight?

MS sheet means mild steel sheet, a flat plate of low-carbon steel used in gates, ducts, tanks, truck bodies, machine guards, and building work. The weight of a sheet is how many kilograms (or pounds) that flat piece of steel weighs. Steel is sold by weight, not by piece, so knowing the weight tells you the price, the load on a truck, and how many workers or lifts you need to move it.

The Formula

A sheet is just a box shape, so its weight is volume times density:

Weight = Thickness × Width × Length × Density

Volume is the space the steel fills. Density is how heavy the metal is for its size. Mild steel has a density of 7.85 g/cm³, which is the same as 7850 kg/m³. So a sheet 1 metre by 2 metres and 1 mm thick holds 2000 cm³ of steel and weighs about 15.7 kg.

Why Thickness Matters Most

Length and width are easy to see, but thickness drives the weight the most because it changes in small steps. Going from 2 mm to 3 mm adds 50% more steel and 50% more cost, even though the sheet looks the same. Old shop talk uses gauge numbers instead of millimetres. A higher gauge number means a thinner sheet.

Common Sheet Sizes

Most mills sell mild steel sheets in set sizes. Popular ones are 1000 × 2000 mm, 1250 × 2500 mm, and 4 × 8 feet (1219 × 2438 mm). Common thicknesses run from 0.5 mm up to 12 mm. Above about 6 mm, the same product is often called a plate instead of a sheet.

Aluminium is about one third the weight of steel for the same size sheet. That is why it is picked for panels and cladding where weight is a problem.

Tips for Real Jobs

  • Keep units the same. Mixing millimetres with metres is the most common mistake. Convert everything first, or use the Unit Converter Calculator.
  • Order some extra. Cutting, offcuts, and scrap mean you use more steel than the finished part needs. Many builders add 5–10%.
  • Expect small gaps. Mills allow a thickness tolerance, so a real sheet may weigh a bit more or less than the math says. Rolling mills often bill on theoretical weight from this same formula.
  • Check the lift. A 6 mm sheet at 1250 × 2500 mm weighs about 147 kg. That is a crane or forklift job, not a hand-carry job.
  • Galvanized sheets weigh a touch more because of the zinc coating on both faces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weight of 1 mm thick MS sheet per square metre?

About 7.85 kg per square metre. For mild steel, just multiply the thickness in mm by 7.85:

  • 1 mm = 7.85 kg/m²
  • 2 mm = 15.7 kg/m²
  • 3 mm = 23.55 kg/m²
  • 6 mm = 47.1 kg/m²

How do I find the weight per square foot?

Keep the unit on mm, type your thickness, then enter 304.8 for both width and length. That is one square foot.

For mild steel, 1 mm sheet works out to about 0.73 kg per square foot. A 2 mm sheet is about 1.46 kg per square foot.

How much does a standard 8 ft × 4 ft MS sheet weigh?

An 8 × 4 ft sheet is 2438 × 1219 mm. At 2 mm thick it weighs about 46.7 kg. At 3 mm it is about 70 kg, and at 5 mm about 116.7 kg.

Why is my delivered sheet weight different from the calculated weight?

Because the tool gives theoretical weight. Real sheets vary a little:

  • Mills allow a small thickness tolerance
  • Sheets are cut slightly over or under size
  • Mill scale, oil, rust, or paint add a bit

A gap of 2–5% is normal. Anything bigger is worth asking about.

If I switch the dimension unit, do I have to retype my sizes?

No. The tool converts the numbers you already typed. If you switch mm to inches, 1000 mm becomes 39.37 in on its own.

The weight stays the same, because only the way it is shown changes.

How many sheets make up one tonne?

Set the pieces to 1 and read the single sheet weight in kg. Then divide 1000 by that number.

Example: a sheet weighs 15.7 kg, so 1000 ÷ 15.7 = about 63 sheets per tonne. You can also raise the piece count until the total reads 1 t.

Does the cost result include tax, cutting, or delivery?

No. The cost is only weight × your rate. Add tax, cutting charges, bending, and freight on top yourself.

What is the volume result useful for?

It shows how much space the steel itself fills. It helps you:

  • Check the weight math is right
  • Work out paint or coating area needs
  • Compare metals at the same size

Does paint or galvanizing add weight?

Yes, a small amount. Zinc coating usually adds about 1–3% on thin sheet. Paint adds even less.

Pick the Galvanized / Carbon Steel preset (7.87 g/cm³) for a slightly closer number, or add a few percent to your total.

I know the weight but not the thickness. Can I work it out?

Yes. For mild steel in metric units:

Thickness (mm) = Weight (kg) ÷ (Length in m × Width in m × 7.85)

Or just change the thickness in the tool until the weight matches your number.

Should I use 7.85 or 7.86 for mild steel density?

Either is fine. The gap is about 0.13%, so on a 100 kg order that is only 130 grams. 7.85 g/cm³ is the value most mills and standards use, so keep it.

Why do some answers show more decimal places than others?

The tool adds more decimals for small numbers so thin or tiny pieces stay accurate. Big numbers get fewer decimals because extra digits do not help.
