Grams to Pounds: What It Means
Grams and pounds both measure weight (mass), but they come from two different systems. The gram (g) is a metric unit used in most of the world. The pound (lb) is an imperial unit used mostly in the United States. Converting grams to pounds lets you compare a weight written one way with a weight written the other way.
The Conversion Rate
One pound is exactly 453.59237 grams. That number is a fixed legal definition, so it never changes. From it we get:
- Grams to pounds: divide the grams by 453.59237
- Pounds to grams: multiply the pounds by 453.59237
- 1 gram ≈ 0.00220462 pounds
Example: 500 g ÷ 453.59237 = 1.1023 lb. And 3 lb × 453.59237 = 1,360.78 g.
Where Ounces Fit In
A pound is split into 16 ounces, and one ounce equals 28.349523125 grams. That is why a weight can be shown two ways: as decimal pounds (like 2.31 lb) or as pounds plus ounces (like 2 lb 5 oz). To get pounds and ounces, divide the grams by 28.349523125 to find total ounces, then split that into whole pounds and the ounces left over.

These are all avoirdupois pounds, the everyday kind. A troy pound, used for gold and silver, is different (about 373.24 g), so do not use it for food or shipping. Also, grams measure mass, not size — a pound of feathers and a pound of steel weigh the same, but they take up very different space.
