Introduction

This Lbs to Tons Calculator changes pounds into tons in one step. Type a weight in pounds, and you get the answer in tons right away. You can also go the other way and turn tons back into pounds.

There is more than one kind of ton, so the calculator gives you three choices:

  • Short ton (US): 2,000 pounds
  • Long ton (UK): 2,240 pounds
  • Metric ton (tonne): about 2,204.62 pounds

Pick the one you need, and the tool shows the other two as well. You can also enter ounces, kilograms, or grams instead of pounds.

The calculator writes out the math step by step, so you can see how the answer was found. A chart compares your weight in all three ton types, and a quick table lists common pound-to-ton values. This helps with school work, shipping loads, truck weights, scrap metal, and farm or freight jobs.

How to use our Lbs to Tons Calculator

Type a weight in pounds and pick your ton type. The calculator shows your weight in short tons, long tons, and metric tons, plus the math steps, a chart, and a quick reference table.

Weight in Pounds (lbs): Type the weight you want to convert. Commas are fine. The tons box updates as you type.

Unit menu (lbs, oz, kg, g): Pick the unit your weight is in. Use pounds for a normal lbs to tons conversion, or switch to ounces, kilograms, or grams.

Weight in Tons: Type a ton value here if you want to go the other way and find pounds. The pounds box updates right away.

Ton type menu: Choose short ton (US, 2,000 lbs), long ton (UK, 2,240 lbs), or metric ton (2,204.62 lbs). This sets which number the answer is based on.

Decimal Places: Pick how many numbers show after the decimal point, from 0 to 6.

Swap button: Flips the two values so you can switch between pounds to tons and tons to pounds.

Convert, Clear, and Reset buttons: Convert redoes the math, Clear empties both boxes, and Reset puts back the starting example of 2,000 lbs.

Pounds to Tons: What You Need to Know

A pound (lb) is a unit of weight used in the United States. A ton is a much bigger unit of weight. To change pounds into tons, you divide the pounds by the number of pounds in one ton. The tricky part is that "ton" means three different things, and each one has a different size.

The Three Kinds of Tons

  • Short ton (st): 2,000 pounds. This is the normal "ton" in the United States. If someone in the US says "a ton," they almost always mean this one.
  • Long ton (lt): 2,240 pounds. This is the old British or imperial ton. It is still used for ships, steel, and some cargo.
  • Metric ton (t): 1,000 kilograms, or about 2,204.62 pounds. This is also called a tonne. Most of the world uses this one.

The Formulas

To go from pounds to tons, divide:

  • Short tons = pounds ÷ 2,000
  • Long tons = pounds ÷ 2,240
  • Metric tons = pounds ÷ 2,204.6226

To go the other way, from tons to pounds, you multiply by the same number instead of dividing.

Quick Examples

Say you have 5,000 pounds of gravel. Divide 5,000 by 2,000 and you get 2.5 short tons. That same pile is 2.2321 long tons or 2.2680 metric tons. A 4,000 pound car weighs exactly 2 short tons. A 500 pound load is 0.25 short tons, or one quarter of a ton.

Where People Use This

Truck drivers use tons for load limits. Farmers weigh hay, grain, and feed in tons. Builders order sand, stone, and concrete by the ton. Scrap yards buy metal by the ton. Shipping companies charge by the ton. In all these jobs, picking the wrong kind of ton can cost real money, so it helps to know which one is being used.

A Handy Tip

Short tons and metric tons are close in size, but not the same. A metric ton is about 10% heavier than a short ton. If you need a fast guess, cut the pounds in half and drop three zeros. For example, 6,000 pounds is about 3 short tons. For exact numbers, use the full math above.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in one ton?

It depends on which ton you mean:

  • Short ton (US): 2,000 lbs
  • Long ton (UK): 2,240 lbs
  • Metric ton (tonne): about 2,204.62 lbs

In the United States, a plain "ton" almost always means 2,000 pounds.

What is the difference between a ton and a tonne?

A ton in the US is 2,000 pounds. A tonne is the metric ton, which is 1,000 kilograms, or about 2,204.62 pounds.

So a tonne is about 204.62 pounds heavier than a US ton, roughly 10% more.

Is a metric ton heavier than a US ton?

Yes. A metric ton is about 2,204.62 pounds and a US short ton is 2,000 pounds. The metric ton is about 10% heavier.

On a big load this matters. Ten metric tons of steel is 2,046 pounds more than ten short tons.

How many tons is 3,000 pounds?

3,000 pounds equals:

  • 1.5 short tons (3,000 ÷ 2,000)
  • 1.3393 long tons (3,000 ÷ 2,240)
  • 1.3608 metric tons (3,000 ÷ 2,204.62)

How many tons is 10,000 pounds?

10,000 pounds equals 5 short tons, 4.4643 long tons, or 4.5359 metric tons.

The short ton math: 10,000 ÷ 2,000 = 5 short tons.

How many pounds is half a ton?

Half a US short ton is 1,000 pounds.

Half a long ton is 1,120 pounds. Half a metric ton is about 1,102.31 pounds.

How do you convert pounds to tons in your head?

For US short tons, cut the number in half and drop three zeros.

Example: 7,000 pounds → half is 3,500 → drop three zeros → 3.5 tons.

This trick only works for short tons. Long and metric tons need real division.

Does a half-ton truck really carry half a ton?

Not anymore. The name comes from old trucks that carried 1,000 pounds of payload.

Today most half-ton pickups carry 1,500 to 2,000 pounds. The "half-ton" label is just a size class now, not the real load limit. Check the sticker in the door frame for the true payload.

Why is a long ton 2,240 pounds?

The long ton comes from the old British system. One hundredweight was 112 pounds, and a ton was 20 hundredweight.

20 × 112 = 2,240 pounds. It is still used for ships, steel, and some cargo in the UK.

Which ton do shipping companies use?

Most international shipping uses the metric ton (1,000 kg). Some UK and older sea freight contracts still use the long ton.

US trucking and domestic freight usually use the short ton. Always ask which one a quote is based on, since the gap can be 10% or more.

How many kilograms are in a ton?

A metric ton is exactly 1,000 kg.

A US short ton is about 907.18 kg. A long ton is about 1,016.05 kg.

How many pounds of scrap metal make a ton?

US scrap yards buy by the short ton, so 2,000 pounds makes one ton.

If a yard pays $200 per ton, that is 10 cents per pound. Some yards quote prices per hundredweight (100 lbs) instead, so check before you sell.

How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh in tons?

Dry gravel weighs about 2,700 pounds per cubic yard, which is roughly 1.35 short tons.

Wet gravel is heavier, closer to 3,000 pounds or 1.5 tons per cubic yard. Sand and stone weigh a bit differently, so ask your supplier for their number.

How many tons does a car weigh?

Most cars weigh 3,000 to 4,000 pounds, or about 1.5 to 2 short tons.

A small car may be 1.3 tons. A full-size pickup or SUV can hit 3 tons or more.
