What Is Metric Conversion?

Metric conversion means changing a measurement from one unit to another. For example, you can turn kilometers into miles, kilograms into pounds, or Celsius into Fahrenheit. The number changes, but the real size stays the same. One meter and 3.28 feet are the same length, just written in different units.

Metric vs. Imperial Units

Most countries use the metric system. It is built on units like meters, grams, and liters, and every step goes up or down by 10. That makes math easy: 1 kilometer is 1,000 meters, and 1 centimeter is one hundredth of a meter.

The United States mostly uses the imperial (US customary) system, with inches, feet, miles, pounds, ounces, and gallons. These units do not follow a simple pattern. There are 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, and 5,280 feet in a mile. How Unit Conversion Works

Most conversions use one simple step: multiply by a number called a conversion factor. To change feet to meters, multiply by 0.3048. To go the other way, divide by 0.3048. Every unit in a group (like length) is linked to one base unit, so any unit can be changed into any other. Temperature is different. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin do not start at the same zero point, so you must add or subtract as well as multiply. Frequently asked questions

Why do all the boxes fill in at the same time?

The calculator links every unit in a group to one base unit. When you type a number, it changes your value to the base unit, then works out every other unit at once. So one entry gives you all the answers in that section.

What does the Auto decimal setting do?

Auto shows about 10 useful digits and drops extra zeros. It is best for most jobs. Pick 2, 4, 6, or 8 when you need a fixed number of decimals, like 2 for money or 4 for shop work.

Why is my answer shown like 1.2e-7?

That is scientific notation. It shows up when a number is very small or very large, so it still fits in the box. 1.2e-7 means 0.00000012. Switching to Auto decimals often gives a cleaner number.

Can I type negative numbers?

Yes. Negative values are fine for temperature, like -40 °C. For length, weight, area, volume, pressure, and energy, a negative answer has no real meaning, so use positive numbers there.

Why did I get a message about absolute zero?

Nothing can be colder than -273.15 °C, -459.67 °F, or 0 K. If you type a colder value, the calculator stops and warns you instead of giving a false answer.

Why does the bar chart sometimes say log scale?

Some units are much bigger than others. For example, 1 kilometer is 1,000,000 millimeters. On a normal chart the small bars would vanish. A log scale squeezes the range so you can still see every bar.

Which extra units are hidden under Show More Units?

Each group has a few less common units. Examples:

  • Weight: long tons (UK), carats, grains

Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?

No. A US gallon is about 3.785 liters. A UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 liters, which is roughly 20% bigger. This tool uses US gallons, quarts, and pints.

Is a metric tonne the same as a US ton?

No. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg (about 2,205 lb). A US short ton is 2,000 lb (about 907 kg). A UK long ton is 2,240 lb (about 1,016 kg). All three are in the Weight section.

Does 1 milliliter equal 1 gram?

Only for pure water. Volume and weight are different things, so the link depends on density. Oil, flour, and metal all weigh different amounts per milliliter. Use a density tool for those.

What is the base unit for each category?

Weight uses kilograms, length uses meters, area uses square meters, volume uses liters, temperature uses degrees Celsius, pressure uses pascals, and energy uses joules. The step-by-step solution shows this middle step.

How accurate are the results?

The tool uses exact factors where they exist, such as 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. All math runs at full accuracy, and rounding happens only when the answer is shown.

Can I type a fraction like 1/2?

No. The boxes take decimals only, so type 0.5 instead of 1/2. Use 0.25 for a quarter and 0.75 for three quarters.

Why does Clear All only empty one section?

Each category keeps its own numbers, so Clear All wipes just that group. Click Reset at the top to clear everything and go back to the sample values.

What is a nautical mile?

A nautical mile is 1,852 meters, used for sea and air travel. It is longer than a normal (statute) mile, which is 1,609.344 meters. Both are in the Length section.

What is the difference between psi, MPa, and bar?

They all measure pressure. 1 MPa = 145.04 psi = 10 bar. Engineers often use MPa for material strength, psi is common in the US for tires and hydraulics, and bar is used in Europe.

Is a kilocalorie the same as a food Calorie?

Yes. The Calorie on a food label is really 1 kilocalorie, or 1,000 small calories. That equals 4,184 joules. Both units are in the Energy section.

Can I press Enter instead of clicking Calculate?

Where do I paste the copied number?
