Introduction

This Miles to Km Calculator changes miles into kilometers in a second. Type a number in the miles box, and the kilometers box fills in right away. You can also go the other way and turn kilometers into miles. Just press the Swap button, or use the dedicated Km to Miles Calculator.

The math is simple: 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers. So 5 miles is 8.0467 km. To go back, you divide instead of multiply.

The tool does more than give one number. It shows your distance in meters, yards, feet, and nautical miles too. It splits the answer into whole units, like "8 km 47 m." It shows each step of the math, draws a chart, and gives a quick table of common miles to km values you can click to load. For other length swaps, try the Meters to Feet Calculator, the Cm to Inches Calculator, or the all-purpose Unit Converter Calculator.

This helps with road signs in other countries, race distances like a 5K or a marathon, car trip planning, school work, and running or biking logs. Pick 2, 4, 6, or 8 decimal places to get the exact level of detail you need, then copy the result with one click.

How to use our Miles to Km Calculator

Type a distance in miles or kilometers, and the calculator shows the matching value in the other unit, plus a breakdown, other units like meters and feet, and the math steps.

Miles (mi): Type the number of miles you want to change to kilometers. You can use decimals and commas, like 1,500.25. The kilometer box fills in right away.

Kilometers (km): Type the number of kilometers you want to change to miles. The miles box updates as you type, so you can convert either way.

Swap button: Click Swap to flip the direction. It moves your "From" unit to the top, so you can go from km to miles instead of miles to km.

Decimal Places: Pick 2, 4, 6, or 8 decimal places. Use 2 for quick answers and 8 when you need a very exact number. If you need to round a value first, the Rounding Calculator and Sig Fig Calculator can help.

Convert button: Click Convert to run the math again and refresh the results, steps, and chart.

Clear / Reset button: Click this to empty both boxes and start a new conversion.

Copy Result button: Click to copy the answer to your clipboard so you can paste it somewhere else.

Quick Reference Table: Click any row, such as 1 mile or 5 miles, to load that distance into the calculator.

Miles to Kilometers: What You Need to Know

A mile and a kilometer both measure distance, but they come from two different systems. The mile is part of the imperial system, used mainly in the United States and the United Kingdom. The kilometer belongs to the metric system, used by most of the world — see the Metric Conversion Calculator for a wider set of unit swaps. So when you read a road sign, a race distance, or a car's speed, the number can mean two very different things depending on where you are.

The Conversion Formula

One mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers. That number is not a rough guess — it was set by international agreement in 1959. To convert, use these two simple rules:

  • Miles to kilometers: multiply the miles by 1.609344
  • Kilometers to miles: divide the kilometers by 1.609344 (or multiply by 0.621371)

Example: 5 miles × 1.609344 = 8.04672 kilometers. Going the other way, 10 kilometers ÷ 1.609344 = 6.21371 miles.

A Quick Trick for Mental Math

A kilometer is a bit more than half a mile. So you can double the kilometers to get a rough mile count, or halve the miles to guess the kilometers. For a closer answer, add about 60% to your miles. For example, 10 miles plus 6 more is about 16 kilometers — very close to the real answer of 16.09. If you want to check how far off an estimate is, the Percent Error Calculator does that in one step.

Where This Matters

Runners deal with this all the time. A 5K race is 3.11 miles, a 10K is 6.21 miles, and a marathon is 26.2 miles or 42.195 kilometers. Once you know the distance, a Running Pace Calculator, 5K Pace Calculator, or Marathon Pace Calculator turns it into a finish time, and the Steps to Miles Calculator converts a step count into distance. Drivers see it too: a 60 mph speed limit is about 97 km/h, and 100 km/h is about 62 mph — the MPH Calculator and Speed Distance Time Calculator handle those speed and travel-time questions, while the Drive Time Calculator and Gas Mileage Calculator help with road trips. Pilots and sailors use a third unit, the nautical mile, which equals 1.852 kilometers or about 1.15 regular miles; see the Air Miles Calculator for flight distances.

Common Distances Side by Side

Here are a few numbers worth remembering:

  • 1 mile = 1.61 km = 1,760 yards = 5,280 feet
  • 1 km = 0.62 miles = 1,000 meters
  • 3 miles ≈ 4.83 km
  • 26.2 miles (marathon) = 42.2 km
  • 100 miles = 160.93 km

Because the math is a straight multiplication, the relationship is always the same. Double the miles and the kilometers double too. That means one conversion factor works for every distance, from a short walk to a cross-country flight. For point-to-point distances rather than unit changes, try the Travel Distance Calculator, the ZIP Code Distance Calculator, or the straight-line As the Crow Flies Distance Calculator.
