Introduction
The Tax Percentage Calculator helps you find tax fast. Type in an amount and a tax rate, and you see the tax, the total, and the steps used to get there.
This tool has six modes:
- Add Tax: Find the tax and total from a pre-tax price, just like a standard Sales Tax Calculator.
- Reverse (De-Tax): Pull the tax back out of a price that already has tax in it, the same job as our Reverse Tax Calculator.
- Find Tax Rate: Know the price and the tax? Get the rate as a percent, or compare it with the Effective Tax Rate Calculator.
- Multiple Taxes: Stack up to five taxes, like state, county, and city.
- Income Tax Brackets: Estimate 2026 federal income tax by filing status with the same brackets used in our Tax Bracket Calculator.
- Tip + Tax + Split: Add tip and tax to a bill, then split it between people, much like the Tip Calculator.
Every mode shows step-by-step math and a chart, so you can check the work and see where your money goes. You can also pick your currency symbol and use the quick percentage helper for simple percent math, or open the full Percentage Calculator for more percent tools.
How to use our Tax Percentage Calculator
Pick a tab, type in your amount and tax rate, and the tax percentage calculator shows the tax amount, the total, the effective tax rate, step-by-step math, and a chart.
Currency: Choose the money symbol you want to see. It only changes the symbol, not the value. If you need to swap between real currencies, use the Currency Calculator.
Add Tax tab — Pre-Tax Amount: Type the price before tax, like 250.00.
Add Tax tab — Tax Rate (%): Type your sales tax or VAT rate, like 8.25. For value-added tax pricing, the VAT Calculator and Add VAT Calculator handle the same math.
Reverse tab — Total Price (Tax Included): Type the full price you paid with tax already inside it.
Reverse tab — Tax Rate (%): Type the tax rate used on that price. You get the net price and the tax that was hidden in the total. Shoppers in VAT countries can also try the Remove VAT Calculator.
Find Tax Rate tab — Pre-Tax Amount: Type the price before tax. This must be more than 0.
Find Tax Rate tab — Second Known Value: Pick if you know the total after tax or the tax you paid.
Find Tax Rate tab — Value: Type that total or tax amount. The tool works out the tax rate as a percent, the same way a Percentage Of Calculator finds a ratio.
Multiple Taxes tab — Pre-Tax Amount: Type the price before any tax is added.
Multiple Taxes tab — Stacking Method: Choose "Additive" if each tax is charged on the base price, or "Compounding" if each tax is charged on the running subtotal.
Multiple Taxes tab — Tax Names and Rates: Name each tax, like State Tax, and type its rate. Leave a rate at 0 to skip that line. To look up a single state figure, see the State Tax Calculator.
Income Tax tab — Gross Annual Income: Type what you earn in a year before tax. Not sure of the yearly figure? The Annual Income Calculator can work it out from your pay.
Income Tax tab — Filing Status: Pick Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, or Head of Household.
Income Tax tab — Deduction Applied: Pick the 2026 standard deduction, none, or a custom amount. For a fuller return-style estimate, try the Income Tax Calculator or the 2026 Tax Calculator.
Income Tax tab — Custom Deduction Amount: If you picked custom, type your deduction here. It is ignored otherwise. The Taxable Income Calculator helps if you are itemizing.
Tip tab — Bill Subtotal: Type the bill amount before tax and tip.
Tip tab — Tax Rate (%): Type the sales tax rate on the bill.
Tip tab — Tip (%): Type how much you want to tip, like 18.
Tip tab — Tip Calculated On: Choose to tip on the pre-tax subtotal or on the subtotal plus tax.
Tip tab — Number of People: Type how many people share the bill, from 1 to 20, to get the amount each person pays.
Quick Percentage Helper — X and Y: Type a percent and a value to find X% of Y.
Quick Percentage Helper — A and B: Type a part and a whole to see what percent A is of B. For price cuts and increases, see the Discount Calculator and Percentage Increase Calculator.
What Is a Tax Percentage?
A tax percentage is a rate that tells you how much extra money you owe on top of a price or an income. If the tax rate is 8%, you pay 8 cents in tax for every dollar. To find the tax, you change the percent into a decimal (divide by 100) and multiply it by the amount. Then you add the tax to get the total.
The Two Main Directions
- Adding tax: You know the price before tax and want the final total. Multiply the price by the rate, then add it on.
- Reverse tax (de-tax): You know the total with tax already inside and want the price before tax. Divide the total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. This is common with VAT and GST prices, where tags already include tax — see the GST Calculator and HST Calculator for country-specific versions.
Finding an Unknown Tax Rate
If you have a receipt but no rate listed, you can work it out. Take the tax you paid, divide it by the price before tax, then multiply by 100. That gives the effective tax rate as a percent. The same ratio idea powers the Percent Change Calculator and the Markup Calculator.
Sales Tax, VAT, and Stacked Taxes
Sales tax in the United States is often built from more than one piece: a state rate, a county rate, and a city rate. Most places add each rate to the same pre-tax price, so you can just add the rates together. A few systems compound instead, meaning each new tax is charged on the running subtotal, which makes the total a bit higher. When you blend several rates into one figure, the Blended Rate Calculator is handy. Property owners paying a local levy can use the Property Tax Calculator.
Income Tax Brackets: Marginal vs. Effective
Income tax works in slices, not one flat rate. Your income is split across brackets, and each slice is taxed at its own rate. Your marginal rate is the rate on your top slice of income. Your effective rate is the total tax divided by your income, and it is always lower than the marginal rate. A raise does not push all of your money into a higher bracket, only the part above the bracket line — check the real impact with the Pay Raise Calculator.
Deductions come first. You subtract a standard deduction or itemized amount from your gross income to get your taxable income, and the brackets are applied to that smaller number. To see what actually lands in your bank account after federal, state, FICA, and withholding, use the Take Home Pay Calculator, the Paycheck Calculator, or the Tax Withholding Calculator. Self-employed filers should also see the Self Employment Tax Calculator, and investors can check the Capital Gains Tax Calculator. Expecting money back? The Tax Refund Calculator gives a quick estimate.
Tax and Tips at Restaurants
Sales tax is charged on the food subtotal. A tip is a choice, not a tax. Most people tip 15% to 20% of the pre-tax subtotal, though some tip on the total after tax, which costs a little more. Adding tax and tip, then dividing by the number of people, gives a fair share for each person. Restaurant owners pricing a menu may also want the Food Cost Calculator and the Margin Calculator.
Quick Tips to Remember
- Tax as a share of the pre-tax price is always larger than tax as a share of the final total.
- Rounding happens on the final cents, so small differences of a penny are normal — the Rounding Calculator shows why.
- Rates change by state, city, and year, so check your local rate before you trust a number.
- These results are estimates for planning, not official tax advice or a filed return. Pair them with a Budget Calculator to plan the cash you set aside.
