The Day Supply Calculator tells you how long your medicine will last. Enter how much you got, how much you take each dose, and how many doses you take each day. You get your days supply, the day you take your last dose, and the best day to ask for a refill.

It works for tablets, capsules, liquids, inhaler puffs, and patches. For liquids, you can use mL, teaspoons, tablespoons, and more. The calculator changes the units for you.

You can also work backward. Tell it how many days you need to cover, and it shows how much medicine to ask for. That helps before a trip or a long break between doctor visits.

How to Use Our Day Supply Calculator

What Is a Day Supply?

A day supply is the number of days a prescription will last before you run out. Pharmacies write this number on every label. It comes from three things: how much medicine you got, how much you take in one dose, and how many doses you take each day.

The Basic Math

First, find the total daily dose. Multiply the amount in one dose by the number of doses per day. Then divide the total quantity you were given by that daily amount.

  • Daily dose = amount per dose × doses per day
  • Day supply = total quantity ÷ daily dose

Example: You get 90 tablets. You take 1 tablet three times a day. That is 3 tablets per day. 90 ÷ 3 = 30 days.

Day supply is always rounded down to a whole day. If the math gives 30.5 days, you only have 30 full days. The leftover bit is not enough for one more full day.

Why Day Supply Matters

Insurance plans use day supply to decide when they will pay for a refill. Most plans allow a refill only after you have used most of your supply, often about 75% to 90% of it. If you ask too early, the claim may be rejected. Day supply also shows if a prescription is a 30-day, 60-day, or 90-day fill, which changes your copay.

For you, the day supply answers one simple question: when will I run out? Missing doses of blood pressure pills, seizure medicine, birth control, or antibiotics can cause real harm. Knowing your run-out date helps you refill on time.

Run-Out Date and Refill Reminders

The run-out date is the last day you have medicine. Count forward from your start date. If you start on the 1st with a 30-day supply, your last dose day is the 30th.

A refill buffer gives you extra time. Most people use 5 to 7 days. That way you can call the pharmacy, wait for the doctor to approve the refill, and pick it up before the bottle is empty. Mail-order refills may need 10 to 14 days of buffer.

Different Medicine Types

  • Tablets and capsules: Count is simple. Half tablets count as 0.5 per dose.
  • Liquids: Measured in mL. In pharmacy, 1 teaspoon = 5 mL and 1 tablespoon = 15 mL. Use an oral syringe or dosing cup, not a kitchen spoon.
  • Inhalers: Labels list total puffs (actuations). A 200-puff inhaler used 2 puffs twice a day lasts 50 days. Priming puffs and rescue puffs use up doses faster.
  • Patches: Count patches, not days worn. A weekly patch means about 1 patch every 7 days.
  • Eye drops, creams, and insulin: These are estimates. Drop size, spill, and how much cream covers an area all change the real supply.

As-Needed (PRN) Medicine

Medicine taken "as needed" has no fixed day supply. Pharmacies usually use the maximum daily dose to figure the number. If you take less, the bottle lasts longer than the label says. Your real run-out date will be later.

What do BID, TID, QID, and q8h mean on a prescription label?

These are short codes for how often you take a dose:

  • QD or daily = 1 time a day
  • BID = 2 times a day
  • TID = 3 times a day
  • QID = 4 times a day
  • q8h = every 8 hours (3 doses a day)
  • q6h = every 6 hours (4 doses a day)
  • q12h = every 12 hours (2 doses a day)
  • PRN = only as needed
  • HS = at bedtime

The number of doses per day is what you use to work out your day supply.

How many days does a 5 mL bottle of eye drops last?

Pharmacies count about 20 drops in 1 mL for most water-thin drops. So a 5 mL bottle holds roughly 100 drops.

If you use 1 drop in each eye twice a day, that is 4 drops a day. 100 ÷ 4 = about 25 days.

Thicker drops and gels give fewer drops per mL, often 16. Wasted drops that miss your eye also cut the real supply, so treat this as an estimate.

How do you figure the day supply for an inhaler?

Look for the total puffs (actuations) on the box, not the grams. Then divide by the puffs you use each day.

Example: a 200-puff inhaler, 2 puffs twice a day = 4 puffs a day. 200 ÷ 4 = 50 days.

For rescue inhalers used as needed, pharmacies usually use the highest allowed dose. At 2 puffs every 4 hours (12 puffs a day), a 200-puff inhaler is only about a 17-day supply. Priming puffs before first use also count against the total.

How do you calculate day supply for insulin?

Work in units. Standard U-100 insulin has 100 units in every 1 mL.

  • A 10 mL vial = 1,000 units
  • A 3 mL pen = 300 units

Add up all the units you inject in one day, then divide.

Example: 20 units in the morning and 20 at night = 40 units a day. One 10 mL vial = 1,000 ÷ 40 = 25 days.

Priming the pen needle (usually 2 units per shot) and throwing away pens after 28 days in use will shorten the real supply.

How many days early can you refill a prescription?

Most insurance plans let you refill after you have used about 75% to 80% of your supply. On a 30-day fill, that is roughly day 23 to day 24. On a 90-day fill, it is around day 68 to day 72.

Controlled medicines are stricter. Many plans and states want 90% used, which means almost no early refill.

If you try sooner, the claim comes back as "refill too soon." You can still pay cash, but the price will be full price.

Can I get my medicine early before a vacation?

Yes, in most cases. Ask your pharmacy for a vacation override. They call your insurance and ask for an early fill so you have enough for the trip.

Do this at least a week before you leave. Bring your travel dates. Most plans allow one or two overrides a year. Controlled medicines like pain pills or ADHD medicine are often refused, so plan those with your doctor.

How do you calculate day supply for a prednisone taper?

A taper changes the dose each day, so you cannot divide by one daily amount. Instead, count the days in the schedule.

Example: 4 tablets a day for 3 days, then 3 a day for 3 days, then 2 a day for 3 days, then 1 a day for 3 days. That is 12 + 9 + 6 + 3 = 30 tablets and a 12-day supply.

Pharmacies enter the total days of the written schedule, not the tablet count divided by a single dose.

How do you count day supply when you take half a tablet?

Count half a tablet as 0.5 per dose.

Example: half a tablet twice a day = 1 tablet a day. A bottle of 30 tablets lasts 30 days.

Only split tablets that have a score line and are not extended-release or coated. Ask your pharmacist first, and use a pill splitter so the halves are even.

How do you figure day supply for a cream or ointment?

Creams are measured in grams, so the supply is an estimate based on how much you use each time.

One guide is the fingertip unit: a strip of cream from the tip of your finger to the first crease is about 0.5 g and covers two flat palms of skin.

Example: 1 g per use, twice a day, is 2 g a day. A 30 g tube = about 15 days.

Big areas like the back or legs use much more, so a tube can run out fast.

Why did my 30-day supply run out early?

Common reasons:

  • You took an extra dose on some days, or a dose was raised.
  • Pills were dropped, spilled, or lost.
  • You started before the label date, or counted from pickup instead of the first dose.
  • An inhaler was primed or test-sprayed, which uses real puffs.
  • Liquid was poured with a kitchen spoon instead of a dosing syringe, so each dose was bigger.

If the medicine keeps running short, tell your doctor or pharmacist rather than skipping doses.

Is a 90-day supply cheaper than three 30-day fills?

Usually yes. Many plans charge about two copays for a 90-day fill instead of three. You also make fewer trips and are less likely to miss doses.

90-day fills work best for steady, long-term medicine like blood pressure, cholesterol, or thyroid pills. They are not allowed for most controlled medicines, and they are a bad fit for a dose that is still being adjusted.

How is day supply counted for birth control packs?

Count every pill in the pack, including the placebo or reminder pills, because you take one pill each day.

  • A 28-pill pack = 28 days
  • 3 packs = 84 days, not 90
  • A 21-pill pack with a 7-day break still equals 28 days

Because 3 packs cover 84 days, your refill date moves earlier each cycle. Order about a week ahead so you never miss the start of a new pack.

What happens if I run out of medicine before my refill is ready?

Call your pharmacy right away. In most states, a pharmacist can give a short emergency supply (often a few days up to 30 days) for regular, non-controlled medicine while they wait on your doctor.

Do not cut pills in half or skip days to stretch the bottle. Stopping some medicines suddenly, such as blood pressure pills, seizure medicine, or steroids, can be dangerous.
