Introduction

This LDL calculator finds your LDL cholesterol, often called the "bad" cholesterol, from a standard lipid panel. Just enter your total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. The tool does the math and shows your result in both mg/dL and mmol/L.

You can pick from three trusted formulas. The Friedewald formula is the classic one used by most labs. The Modified Friedewald formula works better when triglycerides are high. The Martin-Hopkins formula uses a table of 180 values to fine-tune the answer, so it is the most accurate choice and is set as the default.

How to use our LDL Calculator

Enter three numbers from your lipid panel — total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides — and the calculator shows your estimated LDL cholesterol in mg/dL and mmol/L, your risk category, and the full math behind it.

Total Cholesterol (TC): Type the total cholesterol number from your blood test. A normal result is about 125–200 mg/dL (3.9–5.2 mmol/L).

HDL Cholesterol (HDL): Type your HDL, the "good" cholesterol. It must be lower than your total cholesterol. A normal result is about 40–100 mg/dL (1.55–4.01 mmol/L). The same two numbers also drive our Cholesterol Ratio Calculator.

Triglycerides (TG): Type your triglyceride level. For the best result, use a test taken after a 9–12 hour fast. A normal result is under 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L). Triglycerides are also the key input for the VLDL Calculator.

What Is LDL Cholesterol?

LDL stands for low-density lipoprotein. It is often called the "bad" cholesterol. LDL carries cholesterol through your blood. When there is too much of it, the extra cholesterol can stick to the walls of your arteries. Over time this build-up, called plaque, makes arteries narrow and stiff. That raises your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Keeping LDL low is one of the best ways to protect your heart. How LDL Is Measured

A blood test called a lipid panel checks your fats. Most labs do not measure LDL directly. Instead, they measure three things and use math to estimate LDL:

  • Total cholesterol (TC) – all the cholesterol in your blood.
  • HDL cholesterol – the "good" cholesterol that clears fat out of your blood.
  • Triglycerides (TG) – the main type of fat your body stores for energy.

The Three LDL Formulas

Different equations exist because triglycerides change how much cholesterol sits in VLDL particles. Each formula handles that differently.

  • Friedewald Formula: LDL = TC − HDL − (TG ÷ 5). The oldest and most common method. It works well when triglycerides are normal, but it is not trusted above 400 mg/dL, and it can read too low when LDL is under 70 mg/dL.
  • Modified Friedewald: LDL = (TC − HDL) × 0.9 − (TG × 0.1). A simple fix that works better when triglycerides are high.
  • Martin-Hopkins: LDL = TC − HDL − (TG ÷ adjustable factor). Instead of always dividing by 5, it picks a number from a 180-cell table based on your triglycerides and non-HDL cholesterol. Studies show it is the most accurate of the three, so it is the default here.

Non-HDL Cholesterol

Non-HDL cholesterol is total cholesterol minus HDL. It counts every "bad" particle, not just LDL. Many doctors watch it closely, especially when triglycerides are high. A good goal is usually about 30 mg/dL above your LDL goal.

Fasting Matters

Triglycerides jump after you eat. For the most accurate estimate, blood should be drawn after a 9 to 12 hour fast. A non-fasting test can still be useful, but a high triglyceride reading can throw off the Friedewald result. Frequently asked questions

Why is my calculator result different from the LDL on my lab report?

Labs use different methods. Some use the Friedewald formula, some use Martin-Hopkins, and some measure LDL directly in the blood. Each method can give a slightly different number. Make sure you picked the same formula your lab used, and that you typed the values in the right units.

Which formula should I choose?

Use Martin-Hopkins for most cases. It is the default and the most accurate. Pick Friedewald only if you want to match an older lab report. Pick Modified Friedewald if your triglycerides are high and you want a quick, simple estimate.

What is the adjustable factor in the Martin-Hopkins formula?

It replaces the fixed number 5 used by Friedewald. The calculator looks at your triglycerides and your non-HDL cholesterol, then picks a number from a 180-cell table. That number ranges from about 3.1 to 11.9. Using the right factor gives a closer estimate of your true LDL.

Can I use this calculator if my triglycerides are over 400 mg/dL?

Yes, but not with the Friedewald formula. Above 400 mg/dL (about 4.52 mmol/L), Friedewald is not reliable. The tool will warn you and offer to switch to Modified Friedewald or Martin-Hopkins. For very high triglycerides, ask your doctor about a direct LDL blood test.

Why did my LDL result come out negative or very low?

That usually means a value was typed wrong, or the units do not match. Check that total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides are all in the same unit. Very high triglycerides can also push the Friedewald result too low. Try the Martin-Hopkins formula instead.

Why does the tool say HDL cannot be higher than total cholesterol?

Total cholesterol already includes your HDL. So HDL must always be the smaller number. If HDL looks bigger, one of the two values was typed wrong or is in the wrong unit.

Do I need to fast before entering my numbers?

The calculator works either way, but a fasting test gives a better answer. Food raises triglycerides for hours, and triglycerides drive the LDL estimate. If your test was non-fasting and triglycerides are high, use Martin-Hopkins.

What does the VLDL slice in the pie chart mean?

VLDL is very-low-density lipoprotein. It carries triglycerides through your blood. The chart splits your total cholesterol into three parts: LDL, HDL, and VLDL. VLDL is found by subtracting LDL and HDL from your total.

Is estimated LDL the same as ApoB or LDL particle count?

No. This tool estimates the amount of cholesterol inside LDL particles. ApoB and LDL-P count how many particles you have. Two people can have the same LDL number but different particle counts. Ask your doctor if an ApoB test is right for you.

What LDL number means I need medicine?

There is no single cutoff. An LDL of 190 mg/dL (4.91 mmol/L) or higher usually calls for treatment. Lower numbers may still need medicine if you have diabetes, heart disease, or other risks. Only your doctor can decide.

Can I use this calculator if I take a statin?

Yes. Just enter the values from your latest lipid panel. One note: when LDL is under 70 mg/dL, the Friedewald formula often reads too low. Martin-Hopkins handles low LDL much better, so use it.

Does the calculator save or send my health data?

No. All the math runs in your browser. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere. Close the page and the numbers are gone.

What if I switch units after typing my numbers?

The calculator converts all three fields for you. Cholesterol is divided or multiplied by 38.67, and triglycerides by 88.57. You never have to do the math yourself.

How often should I check my cholesterol?

Most healthy adults get a lipid panel every 4 to 6 years. Check more often if you have high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, or take cholesterol medicine. Kids usually get one test between ages 9 and 11.

Why does my LDL change from test to test?

Diet, weight, exercise, illness, stress, alcohol, and even the time of day can move your numbers. Lab machines also vary a little. A change of 10 percent between tests is common and often not a real change.

Can I use this calculator for a child?

The math works, but the risk ranges shown here are for adults. Children have different targets. An LDL under 110 mg/dL is usually seen as fine for kids. Talk to a pediatrician about a child's results.

Why do the three formulas give me three different answers?

Each one guesses VLDL cholesterol in a different way. Friedewald always divides triglycerides by 5. Modified Friedewald uses fixed multipliers. Martin-Hopkins picks a factor that fits your own numbers. When triglycerides are normal, the three answers land close together. When triglycerides are high, they spread apart.

What is a good LDL goal for me?

Under 100 mg/dL (2.59 mmol/L) is a good general goal. Under 70 mg/dL (1.81 mmol/L) is often the goal if you have had a heart attack, stroke, or have diabetes with other risks. Your doctor sets your target based on your full risk picture.
