Introduction

The UPS Shipping Calculator helps you estimate what it costs to send a package with UPS. You enter where the package starts, where it goes, how much it weighs, and how big it is. The tool then shows you a price estimate for each UPS service, from UPS Ground to Next Day Air.

Shipping prices are not just one number. UPS looks at the distance (called a zone), the weight, and the size of your box. If your box is big but light, UPS charges you for the space it takes up. This is called dimensional weight, or DIM weight. The calculator does this math for you and shows which weight is used — you can also check it on its own with our Volumetric Weight Calculator.

You can also add extra options like a signature, Saturday delivery, or declared value. Each one adds a fee, and the tool lists every fee so you can see where your money goes. Fuel surcharges and residential delivery fees are included too, and you can dig into fuel pricing further with the Fuel Surcharge Calculator.

The results show a rate chart, an estimated delivery date for each service, and a step-by-step breakdown of the math. This makes it easy to compare speed and price, so you can pick the shipping option that fits your budget and your deadline. To compare carriers side by side, try our USPS Shipping Calculator, FedEx Shipping Calculator, and DHL Shipping Calculator.

How to use our UPS Shipping Calculator

Enter where your package ships from and to, the box size and weight, the ship date, and any extra services. The UPS shipping calculator then shows your zone, the billable weight, estimated delivery dates, and the estimated cost for each UPS service level, plus a step-by-step breakdown of the math.

Ship From Country/Territory: Pick the country you are shipping from — the United States or Puerto Rico.

Origin City: Type the city where the package starts.

Origin ZIP / Postal Code: Enter the 5-digit ZIP code of the pickup address. This helps set your shipping zone.

Ship To Country/Territory: Choose the country the package is going to. Pick the United States or Puerto Rico for domestic rates, or any other country for international rates. For cross-border orders, the Customs Calculator and Customs Duty Calculator help you estimate import charges.

Destination City: Type the city where the package will be delivered.

Destination ZIP / Postal Code: Enter the delivery ZIP or postal code. Some countries do not use postal codes, so you can leave it blank for those.

Destination Address Type: Choose Residential for homes or Business/Commercial for offices and stores. Homes cost more because of a residential delivery surcharge.

Unit System: Pick Imperial (pounds and inches) or Metric (kilograms and centimeters). Your numbers convert for you. Our Pounds to Kilograms Calculator and Inches to Cm Calculator are handy if you need a quick check.

Number of Packages: Choose how many boxes you are sending, from 1 to 10. A details box appears for each one.

Packaging Type: Pick "Your Packaging" to type your own box size, or pick a UPS box, tube, pak, or letter to use set sizes.

Ship Date: Choose the day you will drop off or hand over the package. It must be today or later. Use the Business Days Calculator to count transit days around weekends and holidays.

Actual Weight: Enter the real weight of each package. The max is 150 lb (68 kg) per package.

Length, Width, and Height: Enter the size of each package. The tool uses these to find dimensional weight and to check for extra handling fees. For cubic volume in metric units, see the CBM Calculator.

Declared Value (USD): Enter how much the goods are worth if you want added coverage. The first $100 is free, so enter 0 for none.

Request Saturday Delivery: Check this box if you need weekend delivery. A surcharge is added on services that offer it.

Carbon Neutral Shipping: Check this box to add a small offset fee per package. If you track emissions, the Carbon Footprint Calculator gives a bigger picture.

Signature Required: Check this box if someone must sign for the package, then choose Delivery Confirmation or Adult Signature Required.

Calculate: Click Calculate to see your UPS rate comparison, delivery dates, surcharges, and total cost. Click Reset to start over with the sample values.

UPS Shipping Costs Explained

UPS prices are not one flat fee. The cost of sending a package depends on how far it goes, how much space it takes up, how heavy it is, and how fast you want it there. Extra fees, called surcharges, get added on top. Knowing these parts helps you guess your shipping cost before you print a label.

Shipping Zones

UPS splits the country into zones. A zone is a way to measure distance from where the package starts to where it ends. Zone 2 is close by. Zone 8 is far away, like coast to coast. The higher the zone number, the more you pay. UPS finds your zone by comparing the first three digits of the pickup ZIP code and the delivery ZIP code. Shipments leaving the country use zone groups based on the destination country instead.

Billable Weight and Dimensional Weight

UPS charges for the greater of two numbers: the real weight of the box, or its dimensional (DIM) weight. DIM weight is based on size, because a big light box still fills up space in a truck or plane.

  • Inches and pounds: length × width × height ÷ 139
  • Centimeters and kilograms: length × width × height ÷ 5000

Whichever number is bigger becomes the billable weight. UPS then rounds each package up to the next whole pound. So a large box of pillows can cost the same as a small box of books that weighs much more. If you ship pallets or LTL loads, the Freight Density Calculator and Freight Class Calculator use the same idea on a bigger scale.

Service Levels

Speed changes the price a lot. UPS Ground and SurePost are the cheapest but take the most days. 3 Day Select, 2nd Day Air, and Next Day Air cost more and arrive sooner. Next Day Air Early A.M. is the fastest and priciest. For packages going out of the country, choices run from Worldwide Economy up to Worldwide Express Plus. Planning inventory around those transit times is easier with the Lead Time Calculator.

Common Surcharges

Surcharges are extra fees that get added to the base rate. Some show up on almost every shipment:

  • Fuel surcharge: a percent of the base rate that changes with fuel prices. Air rates carry a higher percent than ground.
  • Residential delivery: homes cost more to deliver to than businesses.
  • Additional handling: charged for long, bulky, or heavy packages, such as a side over 48 inches, length plus girth over 105 inches, or weight over 50 pounds.
  • Declared value: covers your item for loss or damage. The first $100 is free.
  • Saturday delivery, signature required, and carbon neutral: small add-on fees when you ask for them.

Simple Ways to Pay Less

Use a smaller box so DIM weight drops. Ship to a business address when you can. Pick the slowest service that still meets your deadline. Combine small orders into one package instead of many, and see how much fits in a trailer with the Container Loading Calculator. Stay under the size and weight limits that trigger additional handling. Also remember that transit days are business days, so weekends and holidays push the delivery date later. If you sell online, fold your shipping cost into your pricing with the Margin Calculator or check marketplace fees using the eBay Fee Calculator and FBA Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are the UPS rates from this calculator?

The rates are close estimates, not live quotes. The tool uses published UPS zone rates, DIM rules, and typical surcharge amounts. Your real price can change based on your UPS account discounts, current fuel rates, and address checks. Use the number to plan and compare, then confirm at checkout.

Why is my UPS.com price different from this estimate?

Two main reasons:

  • Discounts: Business accounts often pay less than list rates.
  • Fuel: The fuel surcharge changes often, so the estimate uses an average percent.

Address corrections, remote area fees, and peak season fees can also add cost.

Does the estimate include customs duties and taxes?

No. International totals cover shipping and surcharges only. Duties, import taxes, and broker fees are billed separately by customs. Check those with a customs duty tool before you ship.

What does the "rating weight" number mean?

It is the billable weight rounded up to the next whole pound. UPS rates by full pounds, so a 10.2 lb billable weight is charged as 11 lb. The tool adds the rating weight of every package to price multi-box shipments.

Can I mix pounds and centimeters in the same shipment?

Yes. Each weight and size box has its own unit menu. Pick lb, kg, oz, g for weight and in, ft, cm, mm, m for size. The tool converts everything for you. Note the DIM divisor follows your length unit: 139 for inches, 5000 for centimeters.

What is UPS SurePost and why is it the cheapest?

SurePost is a low-cost service where UPS moves the package and the local post office often makes the final delivery. It saves money but adds about two extra days. It works best for light, non-urgent items going to homes.

Why does Saturday delivery show $0.00 on some services?

Because that service does not offer Saturday delivery. The fee only applies to services that can deliver on a Saturday, like 2nd Day Air, Next Day Air, and Next Day Air Early A.M. Ground and SurePost skip it.

What do the "Best Value" and "Fastest" badges mean?

Best Value marks the service with the lowest total cost. Fastest marks the service with the fewest transit days. Sometimes one service earns both badges.

Why is my delivery date later than the transit days I see?

Transit days are business days. Weekends do not count unless you add Saturday delivery. If you ship on a Friday, the clock starts the next business day. Holidays can push the date out further.

What is the difference between Delivery Confirmation and Adult Signature?

Delivery Confirmation means someone signs for the box. Adult Signature Required means the signer must be 21 or older and show ID. Adult Signature costs more and is used for items like alcohol.

Is declared value the same as insurance?

Not quite. Declared value raises the limit UPS will pay if your package is lost or damaged. It is not a full insurance policy. The first $100 is free, and the fee grows with the value you enter.

Why did my package get an additional handling fee?

The tool flags a package when any of these are true:

  • Longest side is over 48 inches
  • Length plus girth is over 105 inches
  • Billable weight is over 50 pounds

The flag shows the exact reason under each package.

Why can't I edit the box size when I pick a UPS box?

UPS-supplied boxes, tubes, paks, and letters come in set sizes, so the tool locks those numbers. Choose "Your Packaging" if you want to type your own length, width, and height.

Why does the calculator say service is not available for my country?

Some countries are restricted or under trade rules, so UPS service is blocked. Pick a different destination, or contact UPS about your specific shipment.

Can I price more than one box at a time?

Yes. Choose up to 10 packages. Each box gets its own weight and size fields, and each one is rated on its own. The totals line shows your combined billable weight.

What currency are the results in?

All prices are in U.S. dollars (USD), including international services.

Does the price include a UPS pickup?

No. The estimate covers shipping and the surcharges you select. Scheduled pickups and on-demand pickup fees are extra. Dropping off at a UPS Store or drop box avoids that cost.

Why is my big, light box so expensive?

Because DIM weight is higher than the real weight. UPS charges for the space the box fills. Pack tighter and use a smaller box to lower the price. The tool tells you when DIM weight is being billed.
