Introduction

The UPS Ground Shipping Cost Calculator helps you find out what it may cost to send a package with UPS Ground. Type in where the package starts, where it goes, how much it weighs, and how big it is. The tool then shows an estimated price right away.

UPS does not always bill you for the weight you put on the scale. It bills the greater of the actual weight or the dimensional (DIM) weight, which is based on the box size. This calculator works out both numbers for you and uses the bigger one, the same way our Volumetric Weight Calculator does. It also adds common extra fees, like the fuel surcharge, residential delivery, signature service, Saturday delivery, and extra insurance for high-value items.

You can enter up to five packages at once, pick your own box or a UPS box, and switch between pounds and kilograms or inches and centimeters. The results show a full cost breakdown, a per-package table, the rate zone, an estimated delivery time, and a step-by-step math solution so you can see how the price was built.

Use it to compare shipping costs, set fair shipping prices for customers, or check a quote before you print a label. You can also line the result up against our USPS Shipping Calculator, FedEx Shipping Calculator, or DHL Shipping Calculator to see which carrier wins on price. The numbers are estimates, so your final UPS bill may differ a little.

How to Use Our UPS Ground Shipping Cost Calculator

Enter where your shipment starts and ends, then add your package weight, size, and any extra options. The calculator shows your estimated UPS Ground cost, billable weight, delivery time, rate zone, and a full price breakdown.

Ship From Country: Pick the country your package leaves from. UPS Ground starts in the United States or Puerto Rico.

Origin City: Type the city you are shipping from, like Los Angeles.

Origin ZIP Code: Enter the 5-digit ZIP code, or ZIP+4, for the pickup address. This sets your rate zone. If you want to know the actual road or air miles between the two points, try the ZIP Code Distance Calculator.

Ship To Country: Pick the country the package is going to. UPS Ground rates work for the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico. For cross-border shipments, our Customs Calculator and Customs Duty Calculator can estimate import charges.

Destination City: Type the city where the package will be delivered.

Destination ZIP Code: Enter the 5-digit ZIP code, or ZIP+4, for the delivery address.

Delivery Address Type: Choose Residential for a home or Business for a company. Homes cost more because UPS adds a residential fee.

Number of Packages: Pick how many boxes are in this shipment, from 1 to 5.

Packaging Type: Choose Your Packaging to enter your own box size, or pick a UPS box, tube, pak, or letter with fixed sizes.

Show Weights In: Pick pounds or kilograms for the results. UPS still bills in whole pounds. Need a quick swap between units? Use the Pounds to Kilograms Calculator or the Kg to Lbs Calculator.

Fuel Surcharge Rate: Enter the current UPS fuel percent. It is added to the base rate and some fees. Our Fuel Surcharge Calculator explains how carriers set this number.

Package Weight: Enter the weight of each box and pick lb, kg, oz, or g. The max is 150 lb per box.

Length, Width, and Height: Enter each box size and pick in, cm, mm, or ft. These numbers set the dimensional weight. The Inches to Cm Calculator and CBM Calculator help when your box specs are listed in metric units.

Declared Value: Enter what your goods are worth in dollars. Anything over $100 adds an insurance charge.

Signature Options: Check the box if someone must sign. Then pick a normal signature or an adult signature.

Saturday Delivery: Check this box if you need weekend delivery. It adds a fee for U.S. and Puerto Rico addresses. To count only working days for a normal Ground delivery window, use the Business Days Calculator.

UPS Ground Shipping Costs Explained

UPS Ground is a low-cost way to send packages by truck inside the United States, plus Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico. It is slower than air service, but it costs much less. Most U.S. deliveries take 1 to 5 business days, based on how far the box travels. If you are planning inventory around that window, pair this tool with our Lead Time Calculator.

What UPS Charges You For

Your final price is not just one number. UPS adds up several parts:

  • Base rate — set by the billable weight of your package and the rate zone.
  • Fuel surcharge — a percent added on top of the base rate. It changes often, sometimes every week.
  • Residential surcharge — an extra fee when the box goes to a home instead of a business.
  • Declared value — UPS covers up to $100 free. If your item is worth more, you pay a small fee for each extra $100.
  • Signature and Saturday fees — added when you ask for a signature at the door or weekend delivery.
  • Additional Handling and Large Package fees — added for heavy or very big boxes.

Billable Weight and Dimensional Weight

UPS does not always bill the weight on the scale. It compares two numbers and charges for the bigger one:

  • Actual weight — what the package weighs, rounded up to the next whole pound.
  • Dimensional (DIM) weight — length × width × height in inches, divided by 139.

The larger number is your billable weight. This is why a big box of pillows can cost as much as a small box of books. Using a smaller box, or packing tighter, can lower your price fast. For pallet and LTL freight, the same idea shows up in our Freight Density Calculator and Freight Class Calculator.

Rate Zones

UPS splits the country into zones. Zone 2 is close to you, and Zone 8 is far away, like coast to coast. The farther the box goes, the higher the zone and the higher the rate. Zone comes from the ZIP codes of the pickup and delivery spots. Our Distance Between Cities Calculator gives a feel for how far the freight really moves.

UPS Ground Size and Weight Limits

  • Up to 150 lb (68 kg) per package.
  • Longest side up to 108 inches (274 cm).
  • Length plus girth up to 165 inches (419 cm).
  • Over 130 inches of length plus girth adds a Large Package fee.

Girth is measured as 2 × (width + height). Packages over these limits are not accepted on Ground service. When a shipment outgrows parcel rules, move to our Freight Calculator or Container Loading Calculator.

Ways to Pay Less

  • Pick the smallest box that still protects your item.
  • Ship to a business address when you can.
  • Combine small items into one box instead of many.
  • Keep each box under 50 lb and under 48 inches long to skip handling fees.
  • Only add signature, Saturday, or extra insurance if you truly need them.

Prices here are estimates based on published retail rates. Your real cost can differ if you have a UPS account with negotiated rates, or if fuel rates and surcharges change. Sellers who bake shipping into their pricing can check the effect on profit with the Margin Calculator, the Markup Calculator, or the eBay Fee Calculator. For other options, see the general Shipping Calculator, the Postage Calculator, and our broader UPS Shipping Calculator.

Formulas used

Dimensional Weight (DIM divisor 139)
W_{\text{dim}} = \frac{L \times W \times H}{139}
Billable Weight per Package
W_{\text{bill}} = \max\left(1,\ \lceil W_{\text{actual}} \rceil,\ \lceil W_{\text{dim}} \rceil\right)
Base UPS Ground Rate per Package
R_{\text{base}} = b_{\text{zone}} + (W_{\text{bill}} - 1) \times i_{\text{zone}}
Rate Zone from ZIP Prefix Difference
D = \left| \text{ZIP}_{3,\text{origin}} - \text{ZIP}_{3,\text{dest}} \right| \Rightarrow \text{Zone} = \begin{cases} 2 & D \le 5 \\ 3 & D \le 30 \\ 4 & D \le 90 \\ 5 & D \le 200 \\ 6 & D \le 350 \\ 7 & D \le 550 \\ 8 & D > 550 \end{cases}
Declared Value / Insurance Charge
C_{\text{dv}} = \max\left(3.90,\ \left\lceil \frac{V - 100}{100} \right\rceil \times 1.55\right), \quad V > 100
Fuel Surcharge
C_{\text{fuel}} = \frac{f}{100} \times \left( \sum R_{\text{base}} + C_{\text{res}} + C_{\text{AH}} + C_{\text{large}} \right)
Accessorial Surcharges (per shipment)
C_{\text{res}} = 5.95 N, \quad C_{\text{sig}} = N \times \begin{cases} 6.90 \\ 8.65 \end{cases}, \quad C_{\text{AH}} = 28.50, \quad C_{\text{large}} = 170.00, \quad C_{\text{sat}} = 6.00
Estimated Total Shipping Cost
C_{\text{total}} = \sum R_{\text{base}} + C_{\text{res}} + C_{\text{fuel}} + C_{\text{dv}} + C_{\text{sig}} + C_{\text{sat}} + C_{\text{AH}} + C_{\text{large}}

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this UPS Ground cost estimate?

It is close, but not exact. The tool uses published retail rate logic, a DIM divisor of 139, and common surcharges. Your real UPS bill can differ if you have account discounts, if fuel rates change, or if UPS re-measures your box at a sorting hub.

Why is my quote higher than the weight on my scale?

Because UPS bills the bigger of actual weight or dimensional weight. A light but bulky box gets charged for its size. Check the yellow warning under your package inputs. If it says dimensional weight is higher, use a smaller box to cut the cost.

What fuel surcharge percent should I type in?

Use the current UPS Ground fuel rate from the UPS fuel surcharge page. It changes almost every week. The tool starts at 16.50% as a sample. If you are not sure, try a range like 15% to 20% and compare the totals.

Why do I get a message that the service is unavailable?

You picked a destination country that UPS Ground does not serve. Ground and Ground-connected service only covers the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico. For other countries you need an international air service, not Ground.

Can I enter a ZIP+4 code?

Yes. Both 5-digit ZIP codes and ZIP+4 codes work, like 90210 or 90210-1234. The calculator uses the first three digits to set your rate zone, so the extra four digits will not change your price.

What does Zone 2 or Zone 8 mean on my result?

The zone shows how far your box travels. Zone 2 is a short local trip and costs the least. Zone 8 is the longest haul, like coast to coast, and costs the most. Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico are treated as Zone 8 here.

Can I quote more than 5 packages?

No, the tool caps out at 5 boxes per quote. If you ship more, run the calculator twice and add the totals. Just remember that per-box fees like residential and signature apply to every package.

Why did an Additional Handling fee show up?

The tool adds it when a box weighs over 50 lb, is longer than 48 inches, or its second longest side is over 30 inches. To skip this fee, split heavy items into lighter boxes and keep sizes under those limits.

What is the Large Package Surcharge?

It applies when length plus girth passes 130 inches. Girth is 2 × (width + height). This fee replaces Additional Handling and is much larger, so measure carefully before you ship a big box.

Does the calculator include taxes, duties, or brokerage fees?

No. Shipments to Canada and Mexico may also have customs duties, taxes, and brokerage charges. Those are billed separately by UPS or the border agency, so add them on top of this estimate.

Why does a UPS Letter or Pak skip dimensional weight?

Those items use fixed UPS packaging, so the tool bills only the weight you enter. Boxes and tubes have set sizes that the calculator fills in for you, and you cannot change them.

How is the extra insurance charge worked out?

The first $100 of declared value is free. After that you pay about $1.55 for each extra $100, with a minimum charge of $3.90. So a $250 declared value gives 2 units, which hits the $3.90 minimum.

Why does my weight round up to the next whole pound?

UPS bills in whole pounds. A 5.2 lb box is billed as 6 lb. The same rule applies to dimensional weight. The calculator rounds up for you so the estimate matches how UPS rates a package.

Can I enter weights in kilograms or grams?

Yes. Each package has a unit menu with lb, kg, oz, and g. Sizes accept in, cm, mm, and ft. The tool converts everything to pounds and inches, since that is how UPS rates Ground shipments.

Why is Saturday Delivery not adding a fee?

Saturday Delivery only applies to United States and Puerto Rico addresses. If you picked Canada or Mexico, the box stays checked but no fee is added, and a note appears under the cost table.

What if my package is over 150 lb or too long?

The tool will show an error. UPS Ground stops at 150 lb per box, 108 inches on the longest side, and 165 inches of length plus girth. Larger loads must move as freight, not as a parcel.

Are the delivery times guaranteed?

No. The transit days shown are typical estimates based on zone. They count business days only and skip weekends and holidays. Pickup time, weather, and hub delays can change the real arrival date.

Does the estimate include peak season or holiday surcharges?

No. UPS adds demand surcharges during busy times like late November and December. Those are not built into this tool, so your holiday cost may run higher than the estimate here.

Why do two boxes with the same weight cost different amounts?

Size matters as much as weight. A bigger box has a higher dimensional weight, so it gets a higher billable weight. It can also trigger handling or large package fees that a compact box avoids.

Can I use this tool if I have negotiated UPS rates?

You can use it as a starting point. Your discounted rate will be lower than the retail base rate shown. Take the estimate, apply your discount percent, and keep the surcharges, since most of them are not discounted.
