    Introduction

    The Trip Cost Calculator shows you what a road trip will really cost before you leave. Type in where you start and where you are going, add stops along the way, and pick your car. The tool adds up gas or charging, tolls, parking, hotels, food, wear on your car, and driver pay. Then it splits the total by how many people are riding.

    You can compare three routes side by side: the fastest, the cheapest, and a balanced pick. Each one shows its own distance, drive time, fuel cost, and toll count. This helps drivers, rideshare drivers, and delivery drivers see if saving time is worth the extra money in tolls and gas.

    The calculator works with miles or kilometers, and with 18 currencies. Pick your fuel type, from regular gas to diesel to electric. Look up your exact year, make, and model to auto-fill the MPG. If you have an E-ZPass, SunPass, FasTrak, or TxTag, the tool applies the lower toll rate for you.

    You also get a full cost table, a step-by-step math breakdown, charts, and a simple route map with toll plaza markers. Change any number and the results update right away, so you can test different plans and find the best trip cost for your budget.

    How to use our Trip Cost Calculator

    Enter your route, your vehicle, and your extra travel costs. The trip cost calculator then shows your road trip distance, drive time, fuel or energy use, tolls, and the total cost per trip, per person, and per mile.

    Trip Mode: Pick One Way if you drive there only. Pick Round Trip to double the distance for the drive back.

    Unit System: Choose US/Imperial for miles and gallons, or Metric for kilometers and liters. Your entered numbers are converted for you.

    Departure Date & Time: Set when you leave. Rush hour and weekday trips get higher toll rates than nights and weekends.

    Origin: Type your start city. You can also type "lat, lon" or tap the location button to use your current spot.

    Swap button: Click it to trade your origin and destination places.

    Destination: Type the city where your trip ends.

    Intermediate Stops: Click Add Stop for each place you visit on the way. Drag the handle or use the arrow buttons to change the order. With 3 or more stops, click Optimize Stop Order to find a shorter path.

    Enter one-way road distance manually: Tick this box if you already know your driving distance. The map and per-leg table turn off when you use it.

    Manual One-Way Distance: Type the one-way distance and pick miles or kilometers.

    Vehicle Type: Choose car, pickup, motorcycle, RV, bus, or truck. This sets default fuel use, speed, and toll rates.

    Axles: For trucks only, pick how many axles you have. More axles means higher tolls.

    Fuel / Energy Type: Pick regular gas, midgrade, premium, diesel, E85, UNL88, LPG, CNG, or Electric. This sets a default price.

    Year, Make, Model, Trim: Pick your car from the list to auto-fill its MPG and tank size. This step is optional.

    City Efficiency: Enter your gas mileage in town, or let the vehicle list fill it in.

    Highway Efficiency: Enter your gas mileage on the highway.

    Efficiency Unit: Choose MPG (US), MPG (UK), L/100 km, or km/L. Electric cars show mi/kWh and kWh options.

    Highway Driving Mix: Enter the percent of your trip on the highway. The rest counts as city driving.

    Tank / Battery Capacity: Enter your fuel tank size or battery size. This tells you how many fuel or charging stops you need.

    Fuel / Energy Price: Enter what you pay per gallon, liter, or kWh.

    Toll transponder: Pick E-ZPass, SunPass, FasTrak, TxTag, another tag, or None. Tags lower your toll cost.

    Route Type: Pick Fastest, Cheapest (toll-free), or Balanced. This route shows in your breakdown and map.

    Trip Cost Calculator: What It Covers

    A road trip costs more than gas. The real price of driving from one city to another includes fuel or charging, tolls, parking, food, hotels, and the wear you put on your car. Adding all of these up gives you the true cost per trip, per mile, and per person.

    What Goes Into a Trip's Cost

    • Fuel or energy: How far you drive, how much your car uses, and the price per gallon, liter, or kWh.
    • Tolls: Fees charged at bridges, tunnels, and toll roads. Rates change by vehicle size and number of axles.
    • Vignettes: In many European countries you buy a sticker or pass before using highways instead of paying at booths.
    • Parking: Garage or lot fees at your stops and at the end point.
    • Lodging and meals: Long drives need overnight stops. Most drivers cover about 8 hours of driving per day.
    • Wear and depreciation: Tires, oil, brakes, and lost car value. Many people use about $0.20 per mile.
    • Driver time: If you pay a driver, hours behind the wheel are a real cost.

    Why Road Distance Is Longer Than Map Distance

    Roads curve, so the driving distance is always longer than the straight line between two cities. A common rule is to add about 17% to 27% to the straight-line distance. Fast highway routes are usually the shortest and quickest. Toll-free routes save money but add miles and time.

    City vs. Highway Fuel Use

    Cars burn fuel differently in stop-and-go traffic than on open highways. Gas cars usually do better on the highway. Electric cars usually do better in the city, because they get energy back when braking. That is why your highway-versus-city mix changes the answer. Your average speed matters too, since steady cruising uses less fuel than constant braking.

    Tolls and Transponders

    Paying cash or by license plate almost always costs the most. A transponder like E-ZPass, SunPass, FasTrak, or TxTag usually cuts toll rates by 10% to 20%. Plate or video billing can add a fee on top. Some toll roads also charge more during rush hour on weekdays and less on weekends. Commercial drivers should also factor in a fuel surcharge when quoting a run.

    Splitting Costs for Carpools and Rideshares

    When you share a ride, the total cost divides across everyone in the car. Two riders cut the price per person in half. This is why carpooling is one of the cheapest ways to travel long distances. A fair split covers fuel, tolls, and parking, and some drivers also add a small amount for wear on the car. Before you drive, compare the split against an Uber fare to be sure driving still wins.

    Ways to Lower Your Trip Cost

    • Fill up away from highway exits, where fuel usually costs less.
    • Get a toll transponder for the region you drive in most.
    • Drive at a steady speed; fuel use climbs fast above 65 mph.
    • Keep tires at the right pressure and remove roof racks you do not need.
    • Plan stops in the smartest order so you do not backtrack.
    • Share the drive with passengers to split every cost.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why does my distance look longer than what Google Maps shows?

    This tool starts with the straight-line distance between your stops, then adds a road factor. The Fastest route adds about 17%, Balanced adds 20%, and Cheapest adds 27% because toll-free roads wander more.

    Real roads follow rivers, mountains, and city grids, so your true drive may differ. If you already know the exact miles, tick Enter one-way road distance manually and type them in.

    How much do I save with an E-ZPass or other transponder?

    The tool cuts your toll bill by a set amount for each tag:

    • E-ZPass: 15% off
    • SunPass: 18% off
    • FasTrak: 12% off
    • TxTag: 13% off
    • Other tag: 10% off

    Paying by license plate costs about 22% more than cash. The toll table shows all three prices side by side.

    Why did my toll cost go up when I changed the departure time?

    Rush hour costs more. If you leave on a weekday between 6-9 a.m. or 3-7 p.m., tolls rise by 25%.

    Weekend trips get a 5% discount. All other times pay the base rate. Try shifting your start time to see the change.

    What does the Cheapest route actually do?

    It skips tolls entirely, so your toll line drops to zero. But it adds 27% to the straight-line distance and drops your average speed by 16%.

    More miles means more fuel and more hours. Check the route cards to see if the toll savings beat the extra gas.

    How do I split the cost between riders?

    Type the total number of people in the car under Number of Passengers. Include yourself.

    The tool divides the grand total by that number and shows the per-person figure on the route cards and in the KPI boxes. Meals are charged per person, so they scale up with rider count.

    What highway mix should I use?

    Use 70% for most long trips between cities. Use 90% for pure interstate runs. Use 30% or less for city errands and short local drives.

    The rest of the percent counts as city driving. Gas cars get better mileage on the highway; electric cars usually do better in the city.

    What is a vignette and why was I charged one?

    A vignette is a highway pass you buy before you drive, used instead of toll booths. Ten countries in the tool use them: Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Moldova, and North Macedonia.

    If any stop sits in one of those countries, the tool adds the pass cost once, scaled to your vehicle size.

    Why do my nights and days keep changing on their own?

    The Auto-estimate nights & days box is ticked. It assumes about 8 driving hours per day and fills the fields for you.

    Untick it to type your own numbers. This matters for weekend trips where you stay longer than the drive time suggests.

    Does changing the currency change my prices?

    Yes. When you switch currency, every money field you typed is converted at a fixed rate, so a $145 hotel becomes about €133.

    Rates are approximate and do not update live. Check current rates before you book anything.

    What should I put for depreciation and wear?

    About $0.20 per mile works for a normal car. Trucks and RVs run higher. New cars lose value faster than old ones.

    Set it to 0 if you only want out-of-pocket costs like gas, tolls, and parking. It will drop off the breakdown table.

    Why does the truck option cost so much in tolls?

    Trucks pay by axle. The tool multiplies the base toll by 0.75 and then by your axle count, so a 5-axle rig pays about 3.75 times the car rate.

    Vignettes also scale with axles. Set the correct axle count in the drop-down next to Vehicle Type.

    How does Optimize Stop Order work?

    You need 3 or more stops. The tool finds the nearest next stop each time, then swaps pairs to trim the path further.

    Your origin and destination stay locked in place. Only the middle stops move. The status line tells you how much straight-line distance you saved.

    Why is my EV efficiency showing weird units?

    When you pick Electric, the units switch to mi/kWh, km/kWh, kWh/100 km, or kWh/100 mi. Tank capacity becomes battery size in kWh, and price becomes cost per kWh.

    Most EVs get 3 to 4 mi/kWh. Home charging runs about $0.17 per kWh; fast chargers cost more.

    Why is my drive time longer than I expected?

    The tool uses an average speed for your vehicle type, then adjusts it by route. A car averages 105 km/h (about 65 mph) on the Fastest route, but only 88 km/h on the Cheapest one.

    This average already builds in traffic and slowdowns. It does not add time for meal or rest stops.
