Introduction

The SS Plate Weight Calculator tells you how much a stainless steel plate weighs. Just enter the length, width, and thickness of the plate, pick your steel grade, and type in how many plates you need. The tool does the math for you in seconds.

You can work in millimeters, centimeters, meters, inches, or feet. Results show up in kilograms, grams, tonnes, pounds, or ounces. SS Plate Weight: What It Means

An SS plate is a flat sheet of stainless steel. Shops sell it by weight, not by size. So before you buy, ship, or lift a plate, you need to know how heavy it is. Stainless steel plate weight depends on just four things: length, width, thickness, and the grade of steel.

The Formula

The math is simple. First find the volume of the plate, then multiply by the density of the metal. The same volume-times-density idea drives our Density Calculator and Mass Calculator.

Weight (kg) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000

For example, a 2000 × 1000 × 3 mm plate of SS 304 holds 6,000 cm³ of steel. At 7.93 g/cm³, that plate weighs about 47.6 kg. Use the Volume Calculator if you want to check the cubic figure on its own.

Why Grade Changes the Weight

Each stainless steel grade has a slightly different mix of metals, so each one has its own density. Two plates can be the exact same size and still weigh a bit more or less.   • SS 201 – 7.80 g/cm³, low cost, more manganese
  • SS 304 / 304L – 7.93 g/cm³, the most common grade
  • SS 316 / 316L – 7.98 g/cm³, heaviest, best against salt and acid
  • SS 321 – 7.90 g/cm³, good for high heat
  • SS 410 – 7.74 g/cm³, harder, magnetic
  • SS 430 – 7.70 g/cm³, lightest, used for trim and panels

Where Plate Weight Is Used

Buyers use it to check an invoice, since steel is priced per kg, per pound, or per tonne. Tips for Better Numbers

Measure the real thickness with a caliper if you can. Mill plates often run a little thin or thick, and thickness has the biggest effect on weight. Also remember this math gives the weight of a full rectangle. If your plate has holes, cutouts, or rounded corners, the real weight will be a little less. Scrap and offcuts are still paid for, so order using the full plate size. Frequently asked questions

Why is my real plate lighter than the calculated weight?

The calculator gives the weight of a full, solid rectangle. Two things make the real plate lighter:

  • Holes and cutouts remove steel.
  • Mill tolerance — plates are often rolled a bit thinner than the stated size.

Measure the true thickness with a caliper for a closer number.

Can I use different units for length, width, and thickness at the same time?

Yes. Each field has its own unit box. You can enter length in feet, width in inches, and thickness in mm. The calculator converts them all before it does the math.

Is SS 304 or SS 316 heavier?

SS 316 is heavier. Its density is 7.98 g/cm³ against 7.93 g/cm³ for 304. That is about 0.6% more weight for the same plate size. On a 1 tonne order, 316 adds roughly 6 kg.

What is the weight per unit area line for?

It shows how much one square metre (or square foot) of that plate weighs. Engineers use it as a dead load in design. It is also handy for quick checks — multiply it by your plate area to get the weight.

Does the surface finish change the plate weight?

No. Finishes like 2B, No. 4, or mirror polish only change the look of the surface. A polished plate can be a tiny bit thinner, but the change is too small to matter for weight or pricing.

Why does the cost line show a dash?

The price field is blank or set to 0. Type a price per kg, lb, tonne, or gram and the cost will appear. Make sure the unit in the price box matches how your supplier quotes the steel.

How do I find the cost of just one plate?

Set the quantity to 1 and read the total cost. Or take the total cost for all plates and divide it by your quantity.

Can I use this for stainless steel sheet?

Yes. The math is the same for sheet and plate. Just enter the thin thickness, like 0.8 mm or 1.2 mm. Most shops call stock under 6 mm a sheet and 6 mm or more a plate.

Will this work for a round or odd-shaped piece?

Not directly — the tool uses length × width. For an odd shape, work out its area first, then enter that area as two numbers that multiply to it. For example, a 0.5 m² piece can be entered as 1000 mm × 500 mm.

Is stainless steel heavier than mild steel?

Yes, but only a little. Mild steel is about 7.85 g/cm³. SS 304 is 7.93 and SS 316 is 7.98. So a 316 plate weighs about 1.7% more than a mild steel plate of the same size.

Can I use the total weight for shipping and crane limits?

Yes, as a base figure. Add the weight of your pallet, crate, straps, or dunnage on top. Always leave a safety margin under the rated load of the truck, forklift, or crane.

Does chequered or tread plate weigh the same?

No. The raised pattern adds steel. Enter the base thickness, then add about 3% to 5% for the pattern, or use the weight per square metre from your supplier's chart.

Why do tonnes show so many decimal places?

One tonne is 1,000 kg, so small plates come out as a tiny fraction of a tonne. Extra decimals keep the answer accurate. Switch to kg or lb for easier reading on small jobs.

Should I order by the size I need or the full plate size?

Order by the full plate size you buy. Suppliers charge for the whole plate, even if you cut a smaller part out of it. Enter the mill size to price the job, and the cut size only to know the finished part weight.

Does heat or cold change the plate weight?

No. Weight stays the same. Heat makes the steel grow a tiny bit in size, so the density drops, but no metal is added or lost. Use the room-temperature density shown in the tool.

Why is my supplier's invoice weight different?

Suppliers use one of two numbers. Theoretical weight is the same math this tool uses. Actual weight comes from a scale, so it moves with real thickness. Ask which one they bill on before you compare.
