Introduction
Shiny Pokémon are rare color variants that every trainer wants to find. The odds of finding one can be as low as 1 in 8,192 or as high as 1 in 512, depending on your game and hunting method. This shiny odds calculator helps you figure out your exact chances.
Pick your game version, choose your hunting method, and enter how many encounters you have done so far. The calculator does all the math for you. It shows your odds per encounter, how many encounters you should expect, and how long your hunt might take. It covers every method from Masuda breeding and SOS chaining to mass outbreaks and Sparkling Power sandwiches across Generations II through IX.
Whether you are soft resetting for a shiny starter or chaining in the wild, use this tool to see where you stand and how much longer your hunt could take. Once you find your shiny, you can use our Pokemon IV Calculator to check its individual values or our Pokemon Damage Calculator to see how it performs in battle.
How to Use Our Shiny Odds Calculator
Enter your game, hunting method, and encounter details below. The calculator will show your odds per encounter, how many encounters you need on average, and your chance of having found a shiny so far.
Game Version: Pick the Pokémon game you are playing. Each game has a different base shiny rate. Older games use 1/8192 odds, while newer games use 1/4096. If you are unfamiliar with how odds and probabilities differ, our Odds Calculator explains the distinction.
Target Pokémon: Choose the Pokémon you are hunting. Some Pokémon are shiny locked in certain games, which means they can never be shiny. The calculator will warn you if your pick is locked. To learn more about your target's strengths and weaknesses, try our Pokemon Type Calculator.
Display Mode: Choose Mean, Median, or Both. Mean is the average number of encounters needed. Median is the point where half of all hunters would have found a shiny. Both shows you both numbers at once. Our Mean Median Mode Calculator covers these concepts in more detail.
Encounters per Hour: Enter how many encounters you can do in one hour. This is used to estimate how long your hunt will take in real time.
Encounters Performed So Far: Enter how many encounters you have already done. The calculator uses this to tell you your cumulative chance of having found a shiny by now.
Shiny Charm: Turn this on if you have the Shiny Charm in your game. The Shiny Charm adds extra shiny rolls and is available from Black 2 and White 2 onward.
Hunting Method: Click the tab that matches how you are hunting. Only methods that work in your chosen game will be available. Grayed-out tabs do not apply to that game.
Full Odds: Standard wild encounters with no special boosts beyond the Shiny Charm.
Masuda Method: Breeding two Pokémon from games in different languages. Toggle "Parents from different language games" on for the boost to apply. The Oval Charm speeds up eggs but does not change shiny odds. If you enjoy breeding mechanics in other games, our Palworld Breeding Calculator works on similar principles.
SOS Chaining: Enter your current SOS chain length. Bonus shiny rolls kick in at chains of 11, 21, and 31. This method is only in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon.
Poké Radar: Enter your chain count from 0 to 40. Odds get better with each step in the chain and peak at 40.
Chain Fishing: Enter how many times you have reeled in a Pokémon in a row without breaking the chain. Each successful reel adds bonus rolls, up to a chain of 20.
DexNav: Enter your search level for the target Pokémon. Higher search levels give you more shiny rolls. This method is only in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
Hordes: Horde battles put five wild Pokémon on screen at once. Each one gets its own shiny check, so your odds per battle are five times higher.
Safari Zone: Safari Zone encounters use the normal base shiny rate. No chain bonuses apply here.
Mass Outbreak: Select how many Pokémon you have defeated or caught in the outbreak. In Scarlet and Violet, clearing 30 or 60 adds extra shiny rolls. Legends: Arceus applies its outbreak bonus automatically.
Sparkling Power: Pick your Sparkling Power sandwich level from 0 to 3. You can also combine it with an active Mass Outbreak for even better odds. This method is only in Scarlet and Violet.

What Are Shiny Pokémon?
Shiny Pokémon are rare versions of normal Pokémon that have different colors. They sparkle when they appear in battle. Every time you encounter or hatch a Pokémon, the game rolls a virtual dice to decide if it will be shiny. In most modern games, the base chance is 1 in 4096. In older games from Generations II through V, the base chance is 1 in 8192. Shiny Pokémon play no differently — they just look cool and are hard to find. To evaluate how a shiny performs in competitive play, check its stats with our Pokemon Stat Calculator or run matchups through the Pokemon Damage Calculator.
How Shiny Odds Work
Each encounter is its own independent dice roll. Finding a shiny on your first try does not make the next one harder, and failing 10,000 times does not make the next one easier. The game checks one or more "rolls" each encounter. If any single roll hits, the Pokémon is shiny. Methods like the Masuda Method, SOS Chaining, Poké Radar, Chain Fishing, Mass Outbreaks, and Sparkling Power sandwiches add extra rolls per encounter. More rolls means better odds. The underlying math follows a geometric distribution — our Probability Calculator can help you explore these concepts further, and the Binomial Distribution Calculator lets you model the probability of multiple successes across a set number of trials. If you play other games with rare drop mechanics, our OSRS Dry Calculator uses the same cumulative probability formula to track unlucky streaks.
The Shiny Charm
The Shiny Charm is a key item you earn by completing your Pokédex. It was introduced in Black 2 and White 2 and appears in every main game since. It gives you 2 extra shiny rolls on every encounter (3 extra in Legends: Arceus). It stacks with all other shiny hunting methods, so it is always worth getting before you start a long hunt. Completing your Pokédex also means catching everything — our Pokemon Catch Rate Calculator can help you figure out the best ball and strategy for hard-to-catch species.
Shiny-Locked Pokémon
Some Pokémon are shiny locked, which means the game blocks them from ever being shiny. This usually applies to gift starters, cover legendaries, and certain story encounters. No amount of resets will work on a shiny-locked Pokémon. This calculator flags known shiny-locked species so you do not waste your time. You can still use our Pokemon Type Calculator and Pokemon IV Calculator to get the most out of your non-shiny versions.
Mean vs. Median
The mean is the mathematical average number of encounters needed. It equals 1 divided by your odds. The median is the point where half of all hunters would have found a shiny. The median is always lower than the mean because a few very unlucky hunts pull the average up. For full odds in modern games, the mean is 4,096 encounters but the median is only about 2,839. If you want to explore these statistical measures on your own data sets, try our Mean Median Mode Calculator or Median Calculator. For understanding how far your luck deviates from the expected value, the EV Calculator and Percentage Calculator are also useful tools.
